Girls on the Run- Sierras Annual ReportJuly 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013
About Girls on the Run Girls on the Run was established in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1996
by a former high school teacher and track coach. Molly Barker founded
Girls on the Run to help girls recognize their extraordinary potential
and thrive in a world that often sends them unhealthy messages. Girls
on the Run became a 501c3 nonprofit organization in 2000 and served
120,498 girls across the US and Canada in 2012. Girls on the Run-
Sierras is an independent council and 501c3 nonprofit organization
that incorporated in the state of California in 2007 and Nevada in 2011.
Mission We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a
fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
Vision We envision a world where every girl knows and activates her
limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

“Girls on the Run is so much fun
because we get to talk about feelings and we get to run a
lot at school.” ~program participant
Success storyAn extremely shy and insecure 3rd grader, “Dalia” lacked the confidence to speak
up during group discussions. As the season progressed, she
began sharing more with her teammates and
her teacher reported increased participation in the classroom.
Before Girls on the Run, Dalia was very shy and talked very quietly and without
confidence. The way she has blossomed is
amazing. She now speaks with confidence and even
will get in front of the class to present. I asked this girl how she
thinks Girls on the Run affected her and she said, ‘”It made me nicer and more confident.”
EvaluationGirls on the Run utilizes written surveys to measure the
impact of the program on participants’ attitudes and
behaviors. Volunteer coaches distribute the written pre survey
to the girls at the beginning of the 10 week season and a
post survey at the end of the program. Evaluation results
demonstrate that participation in Girls on the Run improves
girls’ self-esteem, body size satisfaction, and physical activity
and that these results are statistically significant.

“ This program will be highly recommended by me, and we will plan to
re-enroll for future years. I don’t have enough good things to say about our experience. Thanks so
much! ” ~Shae and Madeline McGee
“ My first year of coaching was inspiring. I was blown away by the generosity and
nurturing attitudes the girls showed towards one another. Each girl developed her own strengths and helped out her
teammates along the way. It was a wonderful thing
to be a part of! ” ~Stephanie Dees
