Siemens PLM are investing in technologies that will revolutionize the way vehicle shapes are developed with the next generation of advanced, mixed CAD modeling to production capabilities. Over traditional methods of scanning and reverse engineering physical models so they can be used in automotive workflows, Siemens PLM are investing across all areas of the process to enable easy collection and integration of physical assets into the digital design context. It is our vision that physical data can be used directly in automotive design workflows without rework, thereby removing breaks in the process and streamlining throughput. Fully parametric design, simulation and modification support on mixed geometry models ensures continuous evolution as the vehicle geometry matures. With our investments in 3D printing and hybrid additive-subtractive manufacturing methods data can be easily processed and optimized for these new production methods, whether it’s direct printing of production parts or tooling for production.

Topology Optimization for the NX CAD User/Designer

Workflow is designed for the NX CAD user • Familiar dialogs and workflow. • Working in component part, or in the context of an assembly (Work Part) making use of the

surrounding geometry to define • keep in or keep out spaces • connections (eg bolt holes) • load directions

• Has it’s own boolean tree, so the user creates NX bodies and features without having to do NX boolean operations, even re-ordering for the optimization. These are then identified as Optimization Features. • Any mix of solid, facet or primitive bodies can be used. • NX SIMPLE HOLE & COUNTERBORED HOLE are treated as special features. • Each Optimization Feature has it’s own params, eg blending to control the result.

• NX Material library to assign material properties.

Loads & Constraints

Multiple Loadcases can be applied. Loads & Constraints are applied to the Optimization Features, for example the SIMPLE HOLE features shown. To account for loads that need to be applied to a face.

• Use Synchronous cmd Copy Face to create a feature of the required face(s).

• Add this new feature as an Optimization Feature and add an offset thickness.

• A load can now be applied to this feature.
