After the successful completion of three major power plant projects with MAN Diesel, the 220 MW Atlas power plant, 70 MW Yanbu Cement Saudi and 25 MW Soelen Cement Iraq – Siemens and MAN Diesel continue their journey of success with a new venture launching a power plant project, this time in the west region of Africa Guinea. This contract has been awarded for two individual power plants by MAN Diesel; one Power Plant is in the city of Kipe and

the other one in Tombo 2. The scope of work comprises of complete E-control (ECP, GCP and CCP) and SCADA system of a 54 MW power plant in Kipe using 6 Generating Sets, each of 9 MW and a 27 MW power plant in Tombo 2 using 3 Generating Sets, each of 9 MW. Siemens Pakistan won this contract over the local German system integrators who were a very tough competition in this particular project. A commitment of a very fast pace project with the inclusion of a

new dimensions; the SCADA system uses Microsoft Windows Enterprise Server 2008 Cluster architecture to achieve high end reliability and availability which will be configured on Fujitsu RX300S6 servers and Ethernus DX60 RAID system. The implementation of SCADA solution will take place for the first time in the history of Siemens Pakistan. This project also demands another challenge which is the complete project documentation compilation on EPLAN.

Siemens Pakistan foresees a successful completion of this project and looks forward to setting the same standards of great quality as it has delivered in the past with MAN Diesel to foreign and local contractors. Completion of this project widens our coverage of power plant portfolio in the world territory and situates another milestone in this journey of power plants projects with MAN Diesel.

Siemens Pakistan and it client Macter International Limited (MIL) announced successful Go-Live of SAP ERP at Macter International Limited. Being the 4th Go-Live in Pharmaceuticals industry sector, this was reaffirming Siemens’ commitment to its clients and unchallenged strong foothold in the Pharmaceuticals industry sector for SAP implementation in Pakistan. The project was delivered through a collaborative engagement between Macter and Siemens Pakistan with their teams. Siemens after a series of activities in vendor evaluation and qualification, was chosen as the implementation partner and to jointly identify the infrastructural requirements for the SAP ERP for MIL.

Another landmark achievement for both Siemens and MIL is the decision to select, deploy and commission “Fujitsu Flexframe” hardware platform for SAP. This is leading edge virtualization and integrated IT infrastructure solution supporting dynamic assignment of virtual and physical servers to SAP applications, thus bringing in unparalleled levels of efficient hardware resource utilization. A project team from both the sides took six months to implement the project, which by all means is crushing pace for a project of this scope and magnitude. The key modules delivered in a big-bang project approach at MIL included Financials and Controlling,

Materials Management, Production Planning, Quality Management, Sales and Distribution, Human Capital Management, Plant Maintenance. It is also worthy to mention that for the first time Siemens has implemented the Material Ledger functionality in the joint domain of Controlling and Materials Management module to greatly support the period-end processing in the area of actual costing, a feat which still remain somehow cumbersome in absence of the same. “We are thankful to the level of expertise demonstrated by Siemens Pakistan, in combination with the entire organization’s proactive approach to issue resolution and system modification.

It has been critical to the success of our conversion to SAP”, stated Mr. Muhammad Asif (Head of Finance - MIL). Also present at the Go-Live occasion was Mr.Asif Misbah (MD and CEO MIL) who reiterated his vision “to keep moving forward to make MIL an ideal organization with high standards of business ethics, professional conduct and transparency, and the implementation of SAP ERP out of a true team effort, has been remarkable and monumental in the right direction to continue the journey towards excellence .”

SAP implementation project at Federal Board of Revenue went live in July 2010 on schedule and the system was replicated to its 85 field offices in a short duration of 6 months which was completed in December 2010. This is the first public sector project of its kind to be completed without any delay. The project was inaugurated by the then FBR Chairman, Mr. Sohail Ahmed. Speaking on the occasion, he had said that the project would enable FBR to execute real-time internal financial controls and ensure transparency, efficiency and enhanced decision support. The implementation team was led by

Mr. Sarwar Jang, Director SAP, Mr. Sauood Ur Rauoof, Director FI from FBR and Mr. Sheikh Muhammad Hafeez from Siemens. Other team members from Siemens included Mr. Kamran Arif, Mr. Kashif Ehsan, Mr. Ali Makki, Mr. Mohsin Ata, Mr. Nadeem Ali, Mr. Wasim Ahmed and Mr. Ziad Shahab. This project has enabled FBR to link with the already implemented SAP system of Pakistan Audit Department for payroll data, budgeting and accounting information, and its development projects. It has not only brought FBR HQ and its field offices on a single platform but has also brought

uniformity in processes and streamlined information and reporting, allowing FBR management and its staff to focus on analysis rather than transactional issues. FBR is now able to take timely and well informed decisions.FBR is already looking to build on this success by implementing Business Objects. The office has procured additional SAP licenses for Business Objects from Siemens Pakistan which will allow FBR to analyze information beyond its own systems for decision making. Siemens has been chosen as the prime training partner as well.

Siemens Pakistan a leading Enterprise Business Solution and Services Provider announced a five year contract to deliver end-to-end support to Pakistan Telecom-munication Company Limited.

Siemens has opened its first center for sustainable urban development in London. The heart of the Crystal is the world’s largest exhibition dedicated to sustainable urban development. The crystal-shaped building will serve as a conference center, urban dialogue platform and technology and innovation center all in one, bringing together political decision-makers, infrastructure experts and the general public in order to develop concepts for the future of cities and their infrastructures. “Cities are the engines of the world economy and also have the greatest impact on the environment. The development of our planet will stand or fall with the development of cities. Looking ahead to the urban future, the Crystal showcases a wide variety of opportunities and concrete solutions,” said Siemens President and CEO Peter Löscher at the opening ceremony. After a construction phase of about a year and a half, the Crystal brings an architectural highlight and one of the world’s greenest buildings to the British capital. Siemens invested some €35 million in the project. Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, the building features a 270-seat auditorium as well as

the world’s largest exhibition on urban sustainability. Boasting an area of 2,000 square meters, the exhibition presents existing infrastructure solutions that make life in cities more sustainable and environmentally friendly while enhancing its quality. At the Crystal, experts from the Siemens Center of Competence Cities engage in research and development geared to technologies and innovations for tomorrow’s urban infrastructures. In addition, the Infrastructure & Cities Sector will coordinate its City Account Managers from the Crystal. “Cities worldwide are making investments to improve their water supplies, power grids, transportation systems and building infrastructures. Our addressable market alone has a volume of €300 billion. In this growth market, the Crystal will help us intensify dialogue with our customers. The Crystal is our Sector’s showcase, contact point and mastermind,” noted Roland Busch, member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG and CEO of the Infrastructure & Cities Sector. With roughly 87,000 employees, the Sector provides sustainable technologies for urban areas and their infrastructures. Following its inauguration, the Crystal will serve as the venue for two

conferences. On September 20, the UN Habitat program will bring together municipal decision-makers and city planners at a conference entitled Urban Planning for City Leaders. On September 21, participants at the future-oriented Digital Life Design Cities conference, sponsored by Hubert Burda Media, will address questions relating to sustainable urban development and visions for smart cities. Encompassing an area of more than 6,300 square meters, the Crystal is a paragon of energy efficiency. The facility consumes 50 percent less power and emits 65 percent less carbon dioxide than comparable office buildings. Renewable energy sources meet the Crystal’s heating and cooling needs, a photovoltaic system generates green electricity, and rainwater is harvested for use. On the BREEAM and LEED international assessments for energy-efficient buildings, the Crystal will receive top scores (Outstanding and Platinum, respectively) – making it one of the greenest facilities in the world.

Covering 2,000 square meters, the interactive exhibition will guide visitors through the urban infrastructure of the future, focusing

on possibilities for sustainable mobility, building technologies, power and water supplies, and healthcare.

The conference center is an independent forum for engineers, architects, city planners and municipal decision-makers. The Crystal is home to the first and largest of three Centers of Competence Cities. The Center in London offers Siemens experts and external professionals a platform for conducting research and exchanging ideas. The two smaller centers are slated to be built in Shanghai and Washington in the coming years. The Crystal is located in the Borough of Newham, at the historic Royal Victoria Docks. The facility will be open to the public on September 29.

Employee training and develop-ment plays a significant role in per-formance improvement. These trai-nings could be in any area depending on work responsibilities where skills could be developed or improved. Trainings like effective communication, time manage-ment, risk management, and team working skills are fundamental for every employee. Employee trainings can be inter-nal or external. Internal trainings provide employees with an added advantage of acquiring knowledge and developing skills pertinent to their own work ethics and work en-vironment. Online trainings can also play a very positive role to help employees develop different proficiencies in them. External trai-nings are conducted somewhere outside workplace either domesti-cally or internationally. Employees can not only get an opportunity to increase knowledge via these trai-nings but also get a chance to sha-re their experiences as well as learn different things from people belon-

ging to diversified areas. Apart from acquiring knowledge and developing competencies, trai-ning and development activities keep employees motivated, incre-ase their capability to adopt new and innovative work methods, im-prove the quality of work and the-refore augment business perfor-mance. Consequently, performance of every employee should be measured on an individual basis to decide the area where guidance or improvement is required. Upon completion of training or coaching, performance should be measured of each employee and evaluation should be based on how effectively the employee implements the ac-quired skills in work methods. In short, such programs should be made mandatory as they help to develop and hone employee skills and result in increased motivation levels and better work methods.

Corruption is a widespread menace that affects not only the developing countries but the world at large. Funds available for public welfare are drained through

corruption and therefore not available for investments in infrastructure. It cripples democratic and economic development, and distorts fair competition. Being a responsible corporate citizen, preventing corruption and other violations of fair competition is the highest priority at Siemens. Siemens boundaries for fighting corruption extend beyond the company by jointly engaging with other stakeholders through Collective Action. Collective Action is a method for fighting corruption. It helps to create a “level playing field” and a business environment with a reduced risk of corruption, an environment where all market participants compete under fair market conditions. Competitors fight on the basis of quality and innovation to secure business rather than unfair means. Collective Action has three

types of approaches to eradicate corruption. The available methods range from Integrity Pacts, Compliance Pacts, as well as joint measures

implemented as part of a long-term initiative to raise country‘s public awareness and tighten up its regulatory system and procurement guidelines. ‘Integrity pacts’ ensure that the award of orders in the case of public-sector contracts is free from corruption. The bidding companies sign legally binding contracts, and are supervised by an independent monitor for any violation of applicable laws. Under ‘Compliance Pact’ companies from the same sector get together and draw up a code of ethics or code of conduct. These can take various forms, ranging from principles-based provisions to legally binding agreements. ‘Long-term initiatives’ are particularly effective in countries rated as being prone to corruption, as they pave the way to the establishment of an anti-corruption culture. Collaboration between government,

commercial companies and society in the fight against corruption contributes to the raising of awareness among politicians and the general public. In Pakistan, Mr. Nadeem Kazmi & Mr. Zia Zuberi with the aim to promote Siemens’ Collective Action drive arranged a discussion at the Pakistan German Business Forum (PGBF) members’ meeting. The German Consul General at Karachi was the chief guest on the occasion. The PGBF has more than 190 members representing multiple business segments in Pakistan. From Siemens Pakistan, the Compliance team informed the participants about the Collective Action drive, raising awareness on the ways to fight corruption collectively. The participants took keen interest in the concept explained to them during the presentation. Presentation was followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

Training at branches

Training plays an important role in creating employees’ awareness and setting tone from the top in any organisation. Specifically, the “in-person trainings” not only develops understanding of control environment

but also gives Compliance organisation a chance to get “Closer to the Business”. In June 2012, the Compliance team visited Lahore & Islamabad branch offices and conducted two training sessions at each location. More than 90 employees attended these sessions. The sessions were interactive and welcomed productive discussion, and provided employees with an opportunity to discuss practical issues and their possible solutions

Proud to be Siemens competition: Living the Siemens Values

I am a final year student of Bachelors of Engineering in Electrical & Electronics Engineering at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. I have wanted to experience Siemens

since I learnt about the unit that is used in electrical engineering coined ‚Siemens‘ after Werner Von Siemens. As per my university curriculum I had to go for my Industrial training in any Industry for a period of 7 months. My first choice was Siemens as I also needed to return to my country. I have been in Malaysis for the past three and a half years, away from my friends and family, I wished to come back home to Pakistan. I wanted to learn from the dynamic and energetic professionals of my own countryand to get hands-on training and practical exposure. I applied to Siemens Pakistan and eventually like a dream coming true; I was selected and I got the chance to explore Siemens in Pakistan. I packed my bags and flew back home.

Shifting from a casual student life to an entirely professional environment can prove to be a herculean task. Turning up for office in early mornings and sometimes getting back in late evenings, following a strict code of office ethics, ensuring compliance in every small matter really opens doors for a student like me to get real-time experience. It is a great opportunity that I am glad I did not miss out. Learning besides work or simply learning and adapting to new environment teaches you a lot, especially how to tackle difficulties and emergencies. The professionals I interacted with at Siemens Pakistan are truly capable of their abilities and it is an immense pleasure working with and learning from them. Siemens is a place where ideas are turned into innovations, thus truly providing answers to every tough question from Industry to Infrastructure solutions. I wish Siemens all the best in Pakistan and hope I can one day work as an engineer here and contribute in my own way to the innovation and development of this company.

Intern speaks: my experience at Siemens

By Wafa Soomro

“My name is Abdul NasirS oomroa nd I am deaf and mute since birth. I am an office assistant in HR since 1994. Siemens values play a great part in my day to day life. I have to be innovative just to communicate with fellow workers and so also my colleagues who go to extraordinary lengths to make me understand what they require without reminding me of my handicap. My urge for excellence drives me to work to and beyond my limits so I can be a worthy member of this excellent HR team.

At Siemens I learned the real meaning of responsible. No matter what is our role in the scheme of things we are all responsible for the picture that emerges at the end.

My actions speak about my passion for Siemens.”

Siemens Oil and Gas solutions atPakistan Oil and Gas Energy Exhibition (POGEE)

POGEE (Pakistan Oil and Gas Energy Exhibition), a major international exhibition in Pakistan for the energy sector was recently held in Karachi and drew a lot of attention from visitors including customers, policy makers, media and oil and gas entrepreneurs from across the country and 20 other countries participating in the event. The exhibition aimed to provide a platform for professionals in the sector to meet and interact with experts and decision makers looking for

answers to one of the most daunting problems of the country: the energy crisis. The increasing scarcity of fossils fuels and subsequent increase in their prices underlines the economic importance of choosing reliable, innovative, efficient and environmentally-friendly products, systems and solutions. Siemens was presented at this exhibition as the single source supplier for solutions across the entire oil and gas value chain. Siemens visibility was crucial to establish itself as the leading solution provider for energy

needs of the country and derive solution driven discussions and demonstrate technology competence that is unparalleled in the country. Customers demonstrated keen interest in discussing sustainable and integrated solutions for the growing energy needs of the future with Siemens, seeking affordable, and environmentally compatible, solutions for regional energy crisis, employing low cost solutions for power generation, renewable energy sources and solutions.
