Case Study siemens.com The Opportunity Zamakona Shipyard Bilbao constructs various types of maritime vessels, including fishing ships. Among the latest ships manufactured at the Zamakona yard in Santurce, Spain, is a new state-of-the-art tuna freezer vessel. The new vessel, the Euskadi Alai, was built for the Bermeo- based Echebastar Group. The ship was then handed over to its owners at the port of Bilbao’s Maritime Cruise Station at Getxo, Port of Bilbao. The ship’s superstructure and wheelhouse are built of aluminum and it has dual quick-freezing tunnels to whole freeze fish to -76° F (-60°C). The vessel also features a new system that separates the usable caught fish and throws back into the sea those fish that are unusable. This helps reaffirm Echebastar’s position as a leader in sustainable fishery practices and high-quality end products. The Echebastar Group is currently being assessed by the maritime Stewardship Council (MSC) that certifies sustainable and well-managed fisheries worldwide. It is the first Spanish tropical tuna fishery to undergo full assessment by the MSC. The SolutionIn building the Euskadi Alai, Zamakona Shipyard Bilbao elected to equip the vessel with five Sismens engines: four SLE-48ST engines (1 MWe – 50Hz) and one SLE-36ST engine (0.75 MWe – 50Hz) for auxiliary generation. The contract also includes one propulsion system for the auxiliary boat that is equipped with one SLE-36ST engine with a 1/6 reduction ratio (1,000 HP at 1,600 rpm).
