GeneralDescriptionThe Series TY-B, 5.6 K-factor, Hori-zontal and Vertical Sidewall Sprinklers

described in this data sheet are stand-ard response - standard coverage, decorative 5 mm glass bulb type spraysprinklers designed for use in light andordinary hazard, commercial occupan-cies such as banks, hotels, shoppingmalls, etc. They are designed for in-stallation along a wall or the side of abeam and just beneath a smooth ceil-ing. Sidewall sprinklers are commonlyused instead of pendent or uprightsprinklers due to aesthetics or buildingconstruction considerations, wherepiping across the ceiling is not desir-able.

The recessed version of the SeriesTY-B Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler isintended for use in areas with a fin-ished wall. It uses a two-piece Style 10Recessed Escutcheon. The RecessedEscutcheon provides 1/2 inch (12,7mm) of recessed adjustment or up to3/4 inch (19,1 mm) of total adjustmentfrom the flush sidewall position. Theadjustment provided by the RecessedEscutcheon reduces the accuracy towhich the fixed pipe nipples to thesprinklers must be cut.

Corrosion resistant coatings, whereapplicable, are utilized to extend thelife of copper alloy sprinklers beyondthat which would otherwise be ob-tained when exposed to corrosive at-mospheres. Although corrosion resis-tant coated sprinklers have passed the

standard corrosion tests of the appli-cable approval agencies, the testing isnot representative of all possible cor-rosive atmospheres. Consequently, itis recommended that the end user beconsulted with respect to the suitabilityof these coatings for any given corro-sive environment. The effects of ambi-ent temperature, concentration ofchemicals, and gas/chemical velocity, should be considered, as a minimum, along with the corrosive nature of thechemical to which the sprinklers will beexposed.

    WARNINGS

The Series TY-B Sprinklers describedherein must be installed and main-tained in compliance with this docu-ment, as well as with the applicablestandards of the National Fire Protec-tion Association, in addition to thestandards of any other authorities hav-ing jurisdiction. Failure to do so mayimpair the performance of these de-vices.

The owner is responsible for maintain-ing their fire protection system and de-vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinklermanufacturer should be contactedwith any questions.

OperationThe glass Bulb contains a fluid whichexpands when exposed to heat. Whenthe rated temperature is reached, thefluid expands sufficiently to shatter theglass Bulb, allowing the sprinkler toactivate and water to flow.

DesignCriteriaThe Series TY-B Horizontal and Verti-cal Sidewall Sprinklers are intendedfor fire protection systems designed inaccordance with the standard installa-tion rules recognized by the applicableListing or Approval agency (e.g., ULListing is based on the requirements ofNFPA 13, and FM Approval is basedon the requirements of FMs Loss Pre-vention Data Sheets). Only the Style10 Recessed Escutcheon is to be usedfor recessed horizontal installations.

InstallationThe Series TY-B Sprinklers must beinstalled in accordance with the follow-ing instructions:

NOTESDo not install any bulb type sprinkler ifthe bulb is cracked or there is a loss ofliquid from the bulb. With the sprinklerheld horizontally, a small air bubbleshould be present. The diameter of theair bubble is approximately 1/16 inch(1,6 mm) for the 135F/57C to 3/32inch (2,4 mm) for the 360F/182Ctemperature ratings.

A leak tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler jointshould be obtained with a torque of 7to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maxi-mum of 21 ft. lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torquemay be used to install sprinklers with1/2 NPT connections. Higher levels oftorque may distort the sprinkler inletand cause leakage or impairment ofthe sprinkler.

Do not attempt to make-up for insuffi-cient adjustment in the escutcheonplate by under- or over-tightening thesprinkler. Readjust the position of thesprinkler fitting to suit.

The Series TY-B Horizontal and Ver-tical Sidewall Sprinklers must be in-stalled in accordance with the follow-ing instructions.

Step 1. Horizontal sidewall sprinklersare to be installed in the horizontalposition with their centerline of water-way perpendicular to the back wall andparallel to the ceiling. The word TOPon the Deflector is to face towards theceiling.

Vertical sidewall sprinklers are to beinstalled in the pendent or upright po-sition with the arrow on the Deflectorpointing away from the wall.

Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap-plied to the pipe threads, hand tightenthe sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting.

Step 3. Tighten the sprinkler into thesprinkler fitting using only the W-Type6 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 4),except that an 8 or 10 inch adjustable

Crescent wrench is to be used for waxcoated sprinklers. With reference toFigure 1 or 2, the W-Type 6 SprinklerWrench or the Crescent wrench, asapplicable, is to be applied to thewrench flats.

When installing wax coated sprinklerswith the adjustable Crescent wrench, additional care needs to be exercisedto prevent damage to the wax coatingon the sprinkler wrench flats or framearms and, consequently, exposure ofbare metal to the corrosive environ-ment. The jaws of the wrench shouldbe opened sufficiently wide to passover the wrench flats without damag-

ing the wax coating. Before wrenchtightening the sprinkler, the jaws of thewrench are to be adjusted to just con-tact the sprinkler wrench flats. Afterwrench tightening thesprinkler, loosenthe wrench jaws before removing thewrench.

After installation, the sprinkler wrenchflats and frame arms must be in-spected and the wax coat ing re-touched (repaired) whenever the coat-ing has been damaged and bare metalis exposed. The wax coating on thewrench flats can be retouched by gen-tly applying a heated 1/8 inch diameter

steel rod to the areas of wax that havebeen damaged, to smooth it back overareas where bare metal is exposed.

NOTESOnly retouching of the wax coating ap-plied to the wrench flats and framearms is permitted, and the retouchingis to be performed only at the time ofthe initial sprinkler installation.

The steel rod should be heated only tothe point at which it can begin to meltthe wax, and appropriate precautionsneed to be taken, when handling theheated rod, in order to prevent theinstaller from being burned.

The Series TY-B Recessed Horizon-tal Sidewall Sprinklers must be in-stalled in accordance with the follow-ing instructions.

Step A. Recessed horizontal sidewallsprinklers are to be installed in thehorizontal position with their centerlineof waterway perpendicular to the backwall and parallel to the ceiling. Theword TOP on the Deflector is to facetowards the ceiling.

Step B. After installing the Style 10Mounting Plate over the sprinkler

threads, hand tighten the sprinkler intothe sprinkler fitting.

Step C. Tighten the sprinkler into thesprinkler fitting using only the W-Type7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench (Ref.Figure 5). With reference to Figure 1,the W-Type 7 Recessed SprinklerWrench is to be applied to the sprinklerwrench flats.

Step D. After the ceiling has been in-stalled or the finish coat has been ap-plied, slide on the Style 10 Closureover the Series TY-B Sprinkler andpush the Closure over the MountingPlate until its flange comes in contactwith the ceiling.

Care andMaintenanceThe Series TY-B Sprinklers must bemaintained and serviced in accord-ance with the following instructions:

NOTESBefore closing a fire protection systemmain control valve for maintenancework on the fire protection system thatit controls, permission to shutdown theaffected fire protection system must beobtained from the proper authoritiesand all personnel who may be affectedby this action must be notified.

The owner must assure that the sprin-klers are not used for hanging of anyobjects; otherwise, non-operation inthe event of a fire or inadvertent opera-tion may result.

Absence of an escutcheon, which isused to cover a clearance hole, maydelay the time to sprinkler operation ina fire situation.

Sprinklers that are found to be leakingor exhibiting visible signs of corrosionmust be replaced.

Automatic sprinklers must never be be

painted, plated, coated or otherwisealtered after leaving the factory. Modi-

f ied sprinklers must be replaced.Sprinklers that have been exposed tocorrosive products of combustion, buthave not operated, should be replacedif they cannot be completely cleanedby wiping the sprinkler with a cloth orby brushing it with a soft bristle brush.

Care must be exercised to avoid dam-age to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam-aged by dropping, striking, wrenchtwist/slippage, or the like, must be re-placed.Also, replace anysprinkler thathas a cracked bulb or that has lostliquid from its bulb. (Ref. Installation

Section).Frequent visual inspections are rec-ommended to be initially performed forcorrosion resistant coated sprinklers, after the installation has been com-pleted, to verify the integrity of the cor-rosion resistant coating. Thereafter, annual inspect ions per NFPA 25should suffice; however, instead of in-specting from the floor level, a randomsampling of close-up visual inspec-tions should be made, so as to betterdetermine the exact sprinkler condi-tion and the long term integrity of the

corrosion resistant coating, as it maybe affected by the corrosive conditions

    present.

The owner is responsible for the in-spection, testing, and maintenance oftheir fire protection system and de-vices in compliance with this docu-ment, as well as with the applicablestandards of the National Fire Protec-tion Association (e.g., NFPA 25), inaddition to the standards of any otherauthorities having jurisdiction. The in-stalling contractor or sprinkler manu-facturer should be contacted relativeto any questions.

It is recommended that automaticsprinkler systems be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualifiedInspection Service in accordance withlocal requirements and/or nationalcodes.
