Terms & Conditions Side Scan Sonar Data Interpretation Course What to Bring? Students should come prepared to spend three days on the water. The cornerstone of this course is to collect real survey data against real targets in real weather conditions. Therefore, students should come dressed appropriately for small boat operations. Dressed appropriately means: comfortable clothing (jeans, shorts & tee-shirt) and appropriate shoes (tennis shoes or boat shoes). Students should bring with them a foul weather jacket and a sweatshirt. It is not uncommon for weather conditions to change rapidly on the water. If a student is prone to motion sickness, we recommend consulting with a physician about preventative measures. During the course, lunches and drinks will be provided. If a student has a particular food allergy or eating preference, please let us know, we will be more than happy to accommodate you. Please Contact us with any questions. Course ScheduleThe Side Scan Sonar course will be five days long,consisting of two days in the classroom and threedays on-the-water. The on-the-water portions of thecourse will be conducted from a survey vesseloperating out of Solomons Island, Maryland.

Survey an area seeded with small tomedium sized objects with some minorgeologic features.
DAY 3: ON THE WATERSurvey of Complex Objects/Geology
Survey several complex shipwreck sites,complex geology, and manmade structures.
DAY 4: ON THE WATERSite Specific Surveys
Survey sites/objects/geology with a varietyof sonar settings, imaging angles, sonarrange scales. Learn how to map anddocument an object or site.

Course Description
Azulmar Research, LLC has developed a Side
Scan Sonar course to teach students the
fundamentals of interpreting acoustic
imagery. Since the quality of side scan sonar
records is directly related to the conditions
under which it was collected, Azulmar
Research has dedicated a large portion of this
course to on-the-water collection activities
around a variety of manmade and geologic
features. Azulmar Research believes that the
best way to understand acoustic imagery is to
collect it and interpret it in a real world
environment. By interpreting data while it is
being collected, students will develop the
skills necessary to accurately interpret
complex acoustic records.
During this course students will survey a
variety of objects and geology in the Patuxent
River, Maryland.
