Context and objectives

MAIN THEMES

KEY ELEMENTSSPECIFIC CONTEXT

Bokasso

The project will take place in the surroundings ofBokasso. The village is located in the Southern Region,between the Ethiopian Southern Plateau and SouthernLow lands. Coffee trees are growing on hilly areas. Soilerosion (due to wind and severe drought episodes)threatens both the quantity and quality of coffee yields.

A majority of the small-scale farmers mainly rely uponcoffee production for their subsistence. Enhancing thecoffee production resilience in yields and qualityconstitute the best strategy to support economicallythe populations. The plantation of fruit trees will be ofimportance to guaranty food sovereignty .

SIDAMO PROJECT, ETHIOPIA

• Type: Agroforestry / fruit production

• Partner: Bokasso Cooperative

• Participants: 1,813 coffee farmers, certified Organic and FLO

• Objective April 2015: 80 000 trees planted

Sidamo AREA, Southern Region, Ethiopia

LOCATION

Project area is located in hilly regionbetween the Ethiopian CentralPlateau and Southern Lowlands

Poor farmers in a region with lowaccess to national and internationaleconomical support

Erosion issues due to strong slopesand severe drought. The erosionissue is exacerbated by widely spreadintensive culture of Eucalyptus.

Important stake for farmers tomaintain coffee yields and qualityand diversify their incomes.

Page 5: SIDAMO PROJECT

Unsustainable agricultural practice in Bokasso cooperative

SPECIFIC CONTEXT

The coffee grown in the Bokasso Cooperative influencezone is part on the Sidamo Region appellation andcommercialized as such.

It is grown by small-scale farmers on the hillsidessurrounding the town of Bokasso. The average coffeefarm is 1,1 ha.

Coffee trees are growing on sloping terrain, where soilerosion (due to wind and severe drought episodes)threatens both the quantity and quality of coffeeyields. Intensive Eucalyptus timber production (used asa crop) make situation worse.

As timber has been identified as efficient source ofrevenue, it is a high priority to teach local populationhow to produce sustainable and diversified timber.The objective is to get farmers to quit producingEucalyptus timber with unsustainable cultivationmodels and switch to sustainable production.

The plantation of trees in and around coffee fields willhelp to preserve soils and reduce erosion, whilehelping farmers to ensure optimal growing conditions.

Page 6: SIDAMO PROJECT

Adding value to coffee fields

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Ensure sustainability of family farming, byoptimizing the use of lands with thecombination of coffee, timber and fruitproduction;

Reduce soil erosion in coffee fields andensure the long-term quality and availabilityof Sidamo Region coffee;

Protecting water resources that will soonlimit coffee productions (high needs forcoffee washing);

Increase and diversify revenues for farmers,with a better distribution over time throughsustainable timber production, and assistlocal population in reaching foodsovereignty through fruit production;

Favor crop diversification and multi-cropping (stopping systematic inversion inEucalyptus production).

The Bokasso Cooperative

LOCAL PARTNER

The Bokasso cooperative is part of theSidamo Union of coffee producers. Itwas officially registered with thegovernment in 1977. The cooperativemembers are organic and FLO certified

The Sidamo Union has helped toguaranty access to global coffee marketfor the Bokasso cooperative members.

The Bokasso cooperative is closelysupported by local agronomicgovernmental agency (that lack ofresource to fully implement its support)and Technoserve local bureau based inAwassa.

1 813 small-scale farmers

PARTICIPANTS

The members of Bokasso are small-scale farmerswith an average surface area of one ha.

Today, there are 1813 members located in 4“Kebeles” (Unions of communities withinBokasso area)

The total cooperative’s coffee farms are 2476Hectares . All these coffee farms are owned bythe farmers.

They are very poor families below the povertyline, living mainly on revenues of coffeeproduction, and under food sovereignty level formost of them.

There is a strong need to support the progressiveintegration of women.

Observations and remarks for fine-tuning of activities

LEARNINGS

Fully dedicated technicians to the Bokasso producers

The development of the project has been greatly supported (communication, socialization, etc…)

The project will walk on the tracks of small plantation initiatives impulse in 2012 and 2013

Project technician is already in good interaction with Kebeles leaders

Cooperative manager will externally certify processes and funds transfers

The high demand from local producer for quality seedlings (certified timber trees, grafted fruit trees) is confirmed

The high price for grafted high-quality fruit tree makes it almost impossible for local small-scale farmers to obtain

A few producers already interested in planting forest species within coffee, which testify of a local facilities for the project

Strong commitment from local Governmental

Development Agency

The technical team will be fully integrated in the

Bokasso

Local farmers’ strong interest for sustainable

timber and fruits.
