This is my last time as the editor-in-chief. It has amazed me beyond my expectation to see SIAF mold and develop over time to find a place in our high school. From one small vision to a reality, it’s a truly amazing thing… & I would not have been able to be in this place without your love and support.

High school is often remembered as the best or worst experience for many adults. So much happens during our teenage years, especially during teenage years in IB. For those who are unfamiliar with us, I can guarantee that you will see at least one student zombie walking through the halls of ISP because of sleep deprivation. So much happens during our high school years – both in and out of school. We a re in constant s earch fo r our s elve s . We get involved in different activities, make different friends, get wrapped in endless homework and assignments. At this time, some of us often experience overwhelming of different emotions: stressed, happiness, sadness, whatever it may be. This is exactly why we need an outlet. A c reat ive outlet .

I revived SIAF with this purpose: To provide a way for the students to show their creative side, express their thoughts, and share their ideas. I believe that over time SIAF has achieved this, and I couldn’t be more proud. I have no doubt that it will continue flaming the creative side of ISP. Who knows, perhaps one day, we will expand to be bigger.

Thank you so much to everybody who helped us grow and advance. Even you, for reading this.

With great love & bittersweet[ness],

Rosa Park Editor in Chief 2011-2013

Dear SIAF supporters,

Grade 12 !! Been sick for a month. I don’t know, just am. ! I’ve got bumps under my eyes Tissues all over my bed. ! There is no pat and no frown That can uplift my spirits. Good thing one sickness covers the other, ‘Cause people don’t wanna hear it. ! They squint and proclaim, “You worry too much”. Truth is, I’m tired of switching the light on. So I’ll just leave it off. Been sick for a month. Don’t ask me why. It’s two diseases in one, I’m not gonna lie. !

Alone by Anonymous

!Mirror doors reflect the pale look on his spiritless face.

The sound torments him; In this “free” world, he feels everything but “free”.

In this “polished” room, filled with “polished” people, he feels out of place.

Several women dance, So tormenting.

Red dresses flow, all so harmonious. He feels as though stuck in a horrid painting,

Trapped. In this crowded room, he felt,

So alone.

!!The lights are out; the wind is still. The nights as long as my windowsill. And as I lay in my bed, only he runs through my head: The memories, the times that changed, The puzzle pieces rearranged, The smoke he placed into the air, The breath he took away from me, The kiss as he touched my hair, The day we chose to let it be. !And I wonder if it’s all right, That I still think of him at night, When all my angels are asleep, And demons hold me as I weep. Nothing more than pure confusion. A little sadness, some delusion. Hoping to bring the days back, The days when a smile didn’t lack. !So I continue walking as I think Of our relationship on the brink. The cliff is high, and so were we. High on love until we let it be. We built tolerance and walls. You preached ignorance of missed calls. But it never happens the same; Love is a three player game: Your mind, your body and your soul. It’s not two people; it’s yourself. I had to learn that by myself. That as I lay here in my bed, only he runs through my head. That we see love as fun and games. We cry, we laugh. Then we are dead. ! !!

Lover’s Tide by Cristina Arias Grade 10 !Furious Neptune Pounds the cerulean waves Against the creaking dock. The dock creaks and sighs, As it has seen Many lovers step onto ships, And slowly fade into an ocean. The dock feels heavy under the weight Of yet another lover. She steps onto the rocking ship. Away from the island she sails. On the glorious green hill, He stands. He becomes the world So that he may join her in all her travels. As her ship sails away, His eyes become two moons, Which control the tides That rise and fall upon his face. The moons That will Neptune’s tides To return the ship back home. ! !!

Vague words from unconscious noise, Pouring phrases from a helpless heart. Unwinding crossroads of reflective choice: Where does it end, and where does it start? !Letters driving through endless roads, Carrying the weight that hurt feelings load. Cracking the pavement, painful afterburners. As devastated turns, hold desolate corners. !Wheels that cycle in misery, spinning around. From disaster-stricken paths, thoughts gaze. Blurred from reality, fainted mournful haze Blinds the highway, vanishing sound. !A meaningless journey finally sparked light. From painful depression echoed a call. He found the end, victorious in his fight, But something surged, breaking sight. The illusion faded, in shadows lost all. Only as everything crumbled, to an abysmal fall. !!!!!!!

!I keep getting home to a broken padlock just hanging in the door,

And all I see is those broken cigarettes laying in my bed. I kinda wish I had just given you that extra key. !

I find you sleep-deep in the open floor, All the mascara has sailed to the formerly white mat,

Your hands tied in a struggled attempt. !But now the saffron-colored square is in its way

‘Cause it’s the middle of the night, And we’re both far-off done. !

Now your middle name’s far lost in my mind, And it’s pretty sad to admit

I wish you were someone else. !If I see your face again, I’ll wash it thoroughly

Since no one deserves to look as “easy”and desperate. Almost like if you were paid for love, not even

You, alone, pay to be loved. Oh, have you changed ever since.

When I was here, about to lose my mind, You came to save me from my beastly fright. You remarked, “You are loved and you are kind.”

With that, I want you always at my sight. I feel like people don’t want me around,

That being with me is a big waste of time. With you, all those feelings fall to the ground. ’Cause all those moments with you are sublime. With you, I have learned that sorrows can end, That a simple smile can make someone’s day. I wanted to thank you for being my friend,

And for making my sadness go away. You’ve been there after all I have been through.

I just want you to know that I love you.

!The oceans of every land reach into infinity, Making me realize that all of those times were a tragedy. They were complete insanity, Until I saw it: the spark With it’s golden light And your face lit up with its presence. !It’s pretty terrible without your presence I wish our times together lasted forever, like, infinity. I really can’t take this kind of tragedy, Neither can I take my insanity.I need you – your spark Your light. !The only thing that would make me happy now is your light. You made everyone glow with your presence, You made everyone feel invincible and infinite, But now that you’re gone, it’s tragic. And it’s driving me crazy: my insanity. Please, just bring back your spark. !!

Welcome back to Stuck in a Flux!

I would like to thank our new co-editors, Meghna and Isabella, for their energetic efforts particularly in leading SIAF meetings this year. Fall 2013’s volume 11 is filled with the intimate details of our lives. The things we love, the things we ponder over, and the things that make us sad. Poetry many times speaks to the dark side of life, but it can also speak to the bright side as well. Our front cover especially gives a feel to this magazine as if we are opening the cover and reading through our own notebooks and scrapbooks. Many times we think of poetry as a high art form, unattainable or formal when visualized. And yet Stuck in a Flux this time depicts poetry and art as much closer to us than we might think. This volume is dedicated to those who doodle on their papers during class. For those who scribble down poems after waking up from a dream. For those who compose songs in their bedrooms even if no one gets to hear them. Let’s celebrate the poetry and art that resides within us! Let’s celebrate the wealth of experience, knowledge and wonder that we have to share! These are the moments that make me so happy that Stuck in a Flux exists, and that you are an integral part of its existence.

With love and pride,

Ms. Anna Ayala

Faculty Advisor of Stuck in a Flux
