Australia• Australia has a long history of a strong cooperative movement

• A number of excellent examples which are still in existence in various communities and sectors. Social enterprise has previously been relatively disparate and localized, within Victoria particularly, and there is no national alliance, network or coalition nor an agreed model for same at present.

• Australia has seen a recent growth in the number of social enterprises being established, primarily to address job creation and social exclusion. • A number of development programs led by ‘enablers’ such as SVA, the Brotherhood of St Laurence,

Social Firms and now Social Traders has accelerated the idea of investing in social enterprise along with new funding from both private and public sources. As part of the government’s recent stimulus package in response to the GFC, 62 new social enterprises were funded across the country.

•

• The social enterprise conversation has also remerged in Indigenous Australia with a focus on economic development and the recent establishment of the first Indigenous Minority Supplier Council and a small number of Indigenous Chambers of Commerce.

•

• The co-hosts hoped that the SEWF will accelerate the movement’s growth in Australia – new partnerships took place between investors, governments, non profit key leaders organizations and much more
