Meetings are 1st, 3rd and 4th Mondays at 7.45pm
It’s hard to believe it September already! There is still a little time to get those ‘Winter’ images for our
comp in November but you will have to be quick. Now is the time to start thinking seriously about our special
comp in November as it involves 4 prints and 4 digital images.(p8).
It would be nice to see a few more prints in our monthly and special competitions. It makes it more worthwhile for the judges and also for those who enter.
Congratulations to the winners of the Natural History Competition. The results are on page two. I think the judge had a hard time choosing as there were some
excellent images.
Congratulations also to those who were placed in the New Brighton Photojournalism Competition.
Shona Kebble received an honours and five acceptances, Bob McCree received an honours and three acceptances and Sheryl Williams receive five acceptances.
Getting an acceptance in these external competitions is like getting an honours in our monthly competitions.
Don’t forget that our field trip is this Sunday instead of the usual third Sunday. It is
a great place to go with lots to photograph –not just
the trains.
Earlier in August, several of us went to the Howick Club to photograph the Red Hat Ladies. They really let their
hair down and kicked up their heels although I think we had just as good a time as they did.

What a fantastic weekend that Mary and I have just experienced. For
those who may not have known, August is ‘Family History Month’ and to
kick it off, Auckland Library and the Computer Genealogy Group put on the
Auckland Family History Expo 2016. It was held in the Fickling Convention
Centre in Three Kings. Two international Keynote speakers were brought
out… Dick Eastman, a US genealogist of more than thirty years and a
software engineer of more than 40 years. Shauna Hicks has been
tracing her family history since 1977 and worked in libraries and archives
for over 35 years. She is a regular speaker at Genealogy cruises,
conferences and seminars.
The main exhibition hall resembled a miniature Easter show with a
multitude of booths displaying and providing guidance, research material
and handouts on say Scottish, Irish, English, Pacific Islands and Chinese
genealogy, Auckland City Library, National Archives, National and
Alexander Turnbull Libraries. The computer room was available to assist
people get an understanding on new software programs. Specialist
speakers gave freely of their time to give presentations on… ‘The family
history world in 10-years’ time’, ‘Sex, Love and damn lies’, ‘Granite
Mountain and the LDS Family History Centre in Salt Lake City’, ‘Guild of
One Name studies’, Papers Past.. just to name a few. The whole weekend
was a smorgasbord of information and come Sunday, I felt absolutely had
it, but what a wonderful experience.
Photos play a big part of Genealogy, in that photos of people in earlier days show what they were like- places where they lived and what they wore.
One thing is stressed is to name the people and record dates so that they will not get thrown out in later years because they are not recognised or
known. This very fact is, something which we as photographers, must be
very aware of and also to record places where ancestors lived. DNA testing is something new and is helping to prove family ties or not…. New
Zealanders have been very quick to take this on in large numbers due to the recent TV programs on “the DNA Detectives”. I think this is a little
expensive at $149 plus postage both ways at $20. (the suggestion of DNA testing of yourself, father and mother…. $450 is a little expensive for me).
Well that’s a little glimpse into what I was doing over the weekend.

"My interest for photography spawned from travelling. About eleven years ago I spent the
best part of a year living and travelling in South America. I started taking photos as a low
cost alternative to buying souvenirs. I had a little point and shoot camera (Sony Cybershot)
for the South American trip and I took great satisfaction in photographing my travels around such beautiful countries.
It was easy to find inspiration for photography whilst on the adventure. Unfortunately, once I
returned home the faithful little Sony Cybershot stayed packed in its bag and the world of photography remained a foreign place.
A few years on another overseas trip was looming. This time to Vietnam and Cambodia.
Inspiration for photography came back in anticipation for the trip. In a heated lust of photo-
mojo, I bought a new camera. It was on this adventure when I caught the photography bug and the “low cost souvenirs” quickly turned very expensive.
I grew out of point and shoot cameras and bought a Canon 60D, which I currently use. I also
have a Canon 70D (it’s a long story). This year I had a career change that came with a
fabulous perk of full use of a Canon 5D MkIII and an assortment of L-Series lenses, my favourites being the 24-70mm L f2.8 and 70-200mm L IS USM f2.8.
I am a Police Officer and have spent the last five years in the CIB working as a Detective.
Earlier this year I secured a job as a Forensic Photographer. It is a busy job in Auckland. Any
given day I could be photographing a robbery scene in Tuakau to a victim of assault in
Orewa, and anywhere in between. Other aspects of the job also include studio work, 360 degree VR and public relations work such has parades and protests.
Profile Sean Murray
One reason I joined the Howick Camera Club was so I
could put on the job application form that I was an
active member of a camera club. I thought it would
help my cause, which it did! But, the main reason
was to help improve my photography, meet some
like-minded people and keep motivated in being
creative. So far it has certainly met those expectations.
At every club meeting I am continually
amazed at the skill and creativity of other
members. The monthly competition evenings
are inspiring and, having entered, personally rewarding."

James Bragge was an early New Zealand photographer who was based in the Wairarapa and Wellington.
Often revisiting places he had photographed, especially Wellington, he built a good photographic record of the development of the city at that time.
