In 2016 the Nature Conser-vancy of Canada (NCC) protected2,500 acres on Big Trout Bay -one of the last privately owned, undeveloped stretches of shore-line between Duluth, Minnesota, and Thunder Bay, Ontario. In2017, we continued our conser-vation efforts along Lake Supe-rior.

This past summer, NCCinvited 25 experts in taxonomyfrom the Royal Ontario Museumand the Ministry of Natural Re-sources and Forestry to jointhem for a biolitz - surveys thatdiscover which species are usingthe property. A range of animals, plants and fungi were observedon this previously, little-studiedarea. The data collected is avail-able to the public via inaturalistCanada (www.inaturalist.ca).Take a look! This informationwill help in the development of aproperty management plan forthis large and beautiful property. 2017 was a good year for CaribouIsland, with the observation of atleast one active bald eagle nestnear NCC’s portion of the island. Our annual monitoring workfound no new evidence of inva-sive species – a real win! NCC isconstantly on the lookout fornon-native, invasive species, such as common reed, that canhave devastating impacts onwetlands. To learn more aboutcommon reed and other invasiveplants and animals visithttp://www.invasivespeciescen-tre.ca .

Next spring, when youvisit the island for a hike up tothe inland lake, you might notice

something new at the beginningof the trail. NCC will be posting asign prohibiting fires, includingcampfires, on its portion of theisland. While fire is a natural partof the boreal ecosystem, firescaused by human neglect are not.An unattended burning campfirewas seen on the north side of theisland this summer and evidenceof fires on NCC’s portion of theisland have also been found. Weask island users to please respectthis restriction.

Finally, this summer wenoticed a strange addition to thenon-NCC portion of the island. No one is quite sure why anyonewould go to all the trouble tomove a chest freezer to the shoreof the island – but this is defi-nitely not its natural habitat. Wehope it can be relocated this win-ter once the ice is safe to supportsnow machines.

NCC continues to monitorand care for the Caribou Islandproperty and work to conserveother important natural areas onLake Superior. If you have anyquestions or concerns regardingthe use or management of Cari-bou Island, or would like to sup-port NCC’s conservation efforts, please contact Gary Davies,Northwestern Ontario ProgramDirector at [email protected] orgo to natureconser-vancy.ca to donateand learn more.

NCC thanksall those who ex-plore the island forleaving it as theyfound it.

Caribou Island 2017This past year the Nature

Conservancy of Canada (NCC)celebrated the conservation ofBig Trout Bay Nature Reserve -1,019 hectares (2,517 acres)along the north shore of LakeSuperior, in the Municipality ofNeebing. With 21 kilometers ofpristine shoreline, soaring cliffsand vast forests, this property ishome to a large variety of plantsand animals.

In July, with the support ofthe Government of Canada’sBioblitz – Canada 150 program, experts from the Royal OntarioMuseum, the Ministry of Natu-ral Resources and Forestry andNCC took a closer look at thisincredible natural area to dis-cover just how many differentplants, animals, fungi andlichens call Big Trout Bay home. And the results were astound-ing! To date over 2,300 observa-tions of over 860 species havebeen documented. The vast ma-jority of these observations areavailable to the public via theinaturalist website (www.inatu-ralist.org/projects/big-trout-bay-science-bioblitz-bioblitz-scientifique-de-big-trout-bay ). Animals observed ranged fromthe largest, such as moose, to

the smallest such as the tinynorthern short-tailed shrew.Plants included rare arctic andalpine species such as the com-mon butterwort and livelongsaxifrage. These hardy speciesare plants that exist well outsideof their typical range, either inthe far north or at higher eleva-tions, but survive in the cold andoften harsh climate along thecoast of Lake Superior.

This summer’s Bioblitz willhelp NCC and partners to betterunderstand the variety of ecosys-tems on Big Trout Bay. The exis-tence, location and interactionsof this wide variety of plants andanimals, along with their habitat, will help to determine how theproperty should be managed andcared for in the future.

Right now, NCC is working ona property management plan forthe Big Trout Bay Nature Re-serve. This plan will identify con-servation goals for the area andlayout how NCC plans to achievethose goals. Conservation goalscan include things such as main-tain a healthy forest, whichmight be supported by actionssuch as the identification and re-moval of invasive plant species, dismantling roads or cartingaway garbage, and allowing for-merly logged areas to becomeforest once more.. Other goalsmight include public involve-ment and education such as thecreation of hiking trails or the in-stallation of interpretive signs. The property management planfor Big Trout Bay will be com-pleted in early 2018, with imple-mentation over the next 5 years. The Nature Conservancy ofCanada thanks all those whohave contributed their time andsupport to the conservation ofthe Big Trout Bay Nature Reserveand looks forward to workingwith the community in the man-agement of this incredible land-scape.

If you have any questions orconcerns regarding the use ormanagement of this property, orwould like to support NCC’s con-servation efforts, please contactGary Davies, Northwestern On-tario Program Director [email protected] or go to natureconser-vancy.ca to donate and learnmore.
