T he beginning of each year typically brings reflection of the past year and planning for the new year. I, like so

many others, usually make a long list of New Year’s resolutions. But I read an article recently that made me rethink this idea. The article talked about how as children we are taught, little by little, to crawl, to walk, to read, etc. As adults however, we often expect to conquer the world all in one full sweep! Why do I always want to start out with the bigger things?

In Luke 16:10 we are told, “He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much.” The NIV states it a bit simpler, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” Jesus is trying to tell us that the best place to start is with one small step. Do one thing, then do the next; first very little and then gradually building up to much. So this year I have decided to pick three areas in which I really want to grow in, write them down, and then Jesus and I can work on them together, one day at a time. A little here, a little there, always trusting He’ll get me where He wants me to go, all in His time.

So what does all of this have to do with Shults-Lewis and working with our youth? The teens we work with are placed with us long after they have learned to walk and read. Our mission at Shults-Lewis is to show these youth God in everything we do; in counseling, in groups, in daily living, in our own actions and words, in school. That’s really a tall order for most of us, to know everything we do is to be for the glory of God and to show these children God’s love. Although we may struggle at times in this mission, we keep trying because we know that empowering these teens with tools that will help them be successful adults – all with God’s love – is our mission and is the right thing to do. As staff, we want to make sure we do our part in healing traumatized youth and in helping them to be productive adults, full of love for God and others.

When teens are first placed here at Shults-Lewis, we don’t expect them to know all the rules and guidelines; that takes time for them to know and understand them.

However, in time, and with small steps and proper guidance, the kids learn what is expected and usually rise to those expectations. For some, we don’t see the results we hope for until many years later, when the resident returns as an adult to visit. They oftentimes tell us how much Shults-Lewis means to them and how much it helped them to get their lives on track. Many times the person will even apologize for the way they acted while in placement! It takes time, consistency, and above all, someone showing them God’s love to make a difference in these residents’ lives. It isn’t done in a day, a week, or even a year. But given the right tools and teaching, what we do here can and does make a difference in the lives of the youth and families we serve. It is an ongoing process and is all done under the umbrella of God’s love, step by step, little by little.

So as I make my list of three areas I want to work on this year, one of my biggest areas is to show others the love that Christ has so abundantly showed to me. One way I can do this is through my work here at Shults-Lewis and by encouraging others to join me in this great and important mission. As 2020 begins, we have many needs; we need houseparents, teachers, counselors and support staff. I think I can speak for all of us here at Shults-Lewis in saying the mission is worth the hard work.

Won’t you make serving God through Shults-Lewis one of your top priorities for 2020? The work here could not be done without our awesome donors, supporters, prayers, and volunteers. Words cannot express how thankful I am for all of you. If you want to know how you can help Shults-Lewis, please call me or better yet, stop by and visit our beautiful campus. Visitors are always welcome here.

May we all remember that through our prayers, contributions and devotion to this work, we can touch the hearts of those who need us more than ever.

In His Service,

Angela

I ’m pretty transparent with y’all. I consider each of you to be friends and you each hold a special place in my heart. Not sure you know this, but in order to

get the Telegram into your mail box at the beginning of February, I’m actually sitting here writing this article on December 31st. And I’m just going to keep being real with you….2019 was ROUGH! I mean, it was a seriously difficult year for me!

But, what is completely incredible is that despite the difficult year, God continued to show up as only He can and do AWESOME things. I am so grateful for yet another trip around the sun and all of the blessings that came into my life and to Shults-Lewis in 2019.

As you know, I’m a big planner. I love calendars and To Do lists and organizational tools. I love starting a new year of my gratitude journal. I love looking out at the year ahead and start planning and dreaming about our Phone Campaign (all of the month of March), Day of Prayer & Giving (May 31st), our Golf Tournament (June 12th), groups visiting, Annual Day (September 19th), and the times we’ll get to see each other. I am so psyched for the year 2020!

With all that planning, I always enjoy picking a focus word for the year. I have settled on the word “Surrender” for 2020. Now for those of you who are inwardly giggling at my crazy planner brain and already having the year laid out, and I picked “surrender”, I hear ya. But I know that none of my planning, no matter how hard I can try, amounts to anything if I am not surrendering it all to God and His will for 2020!

We already have several known challenges ahead of us as we are entering the year short-staffed. We need you to pray diligently and urgently and we need you to spread the word that we need staff!!! I know that there are many unknown challenges that will present themselves in the coming year. However, I believe that as we, as an agency, surrender to God and His will, we are going to have an AWESOME year together!

You ready for an awesome year together?! Let’s get to it…

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season! We had a great first semester! Fall is a fun time

around here. In November the students participated in a program to celebrate Veterans’ Day. All of them volunteered to read poems

honoring veterans as part of the program. I was so proud of the excellent job that they all did. A couple of them told me that they were so nervous they were shaking! I think it is so good for the students to have experiences like this.

Three of our students successfully completed our program and went home before the holidays. We honored them with a cake right before Christmas break. We had a fun

Christmas party on the afternoon of December 20th, which was their last day of school before the break, with a Taco Bell meal provided by the Waterford Church of Christ, desserts and hot cocoa throughout the afternoon, games, a gift exchange, a volleyball game between staff and students and finally Santa. The students and teachers were all looking forward to Christmas break. We will be ready to start second semester on January 2nd and look forward to an exciting new year!

Thank you to everyone who helped make Christmas special for our students. They were very well blessed with gifts. Please come and visit our campus whenever you can and remember that I am still looking for career speakers. Happy New Year!!

From Our Home To Yours

W ow! A new year is here. What to expect? 2020 holds a lot of potential for

Shults-Lewis. There have been a lot of changes in this last year. Nonetheless, God continues to bless

the ministry here at Shults Lewis. We continue to press on toward the mark (Philippians 3:14). We are also looking forward to teaching the children we have in our care about the prize as well. Our great gift that we can impart to the children in our care is the saving gospel of Jesus Christ.

We had several children in the latter part of 2019 successfully complete the program and return to their families. This really is somewhat bitter sweet. Even in the short time that I have been here these children have endeared themselves into my heart. We are so proud of their progress here, but will miss them a great deal. We really hope that they will come back and visit with us. Perhaps they will on Annual Day, who knows. God knows the plans He has for these children; we are simply the vehicles He uses to allow these children to hear His Word.

Currently we are looking at several children to place in our program. We want to help them in their walk of life. On one hand it is truly sad that there continues to be a steady

stream of children in need of facilities like Shults-Lewis, however, on the other hand it is God’s wisdom that puts places like Shults-Lewis here so that we are able to help.

Also, this new year lends itself to new opportunities for staff training. Each year there are many training requirements to be met from the state. We strive to go above and beyond those requirements. This year the staff will continue to work through TBRI (Trust Based Relationship Intervention) training. We want to put into the hands of the houseparents as many tools as possible to help them work with the children that come to Shults-Lewis, children who have been traumatized and are from “hard places”.

Please, continue to keep Shults-Lewis in your prayers, especially at the beginning of this new year. Pray that God will continue to bless our work at Shults-Lewis as we strive to be servants for His glory. As always, we are so thankful for your prayers, support and the love that you show toward us, but more importantly toward the children that we have in our care. Blessings to your home in this new year.

Angela
