MAP, COMPASS & GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEMS (GPS)Run Time: Full day (6 hrs)

Students will be introduced to basic map and compass terminology and skills through a combination of presentation, hands-on learning, and outdoor challenges, while gaining an appreciation for the importance of maps and compasses in the workplace and in their daily lives. Participants will also learn how GPS works, what it can be used for, and how it relates to topographical maps. Activities are designed to provide students an opportunity to gain familiarity with handheld GPS devices as they use them around the local property to compete in a friendly geocaching challenge.

WILDERNESS SURVIVAL Run Time: Half day (3 hrs)

During this certification, students will work in a cooperative team situation to understand and practice some important aspects of survival techniques in the outdoors. Each working group will be challenged to construct a shelter from non-living, natural materials. They will also construct a small cooking fire and boil water for cedar tea. Key elements of this lesson stress a no trace camping philosophy, as well as fundamental safety aspects of preparation and planning for a successful outdoor experience.

SECTOR PARTNER CONTEXTUALIZED EXPERIENCE (SPCE) I.C.E TRAINING AND FACILITATION Run Time: Full day (6 hrs)

Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship! Let TRCA’s Ontario Certified Teachers (OCT) facilitate your I.C.E training. In partnership with a selected sector partner, we will help develop a thoughtful, authentic challenge statement that aligns with students’ career aspirations. Then, using the three gears approach, we help students explore Empathy & Needs Finding, Ideation & Prototyping and Strategy & Testing. Learning culminates in a pitch where students are challenged to present their solutions, and receive feedback from their sector partner.

We can also be your Sector Partner for the Environment sector.

LEADERSHIP SKILLSRun Time: Half day (3 hrs)

During this interactive course, students gain insight, experience and effective leadership skills required to be a leader in today’s rapidly changing world. This program will focus on building the skills, attitudes, behaviors and knowledge of students to become effective leaders in any setting.
