Super Club's Day

The Inter-Business Council held the fall 2015 Super Clubs Day at Ching field and hosted the following events: flag football, volleyball, brain bowl, relay race, and cheer and dance. The SHRM—Aloha Chapter placed 2nd in cheer & dance and 2nd in the relay race, catapulting our rank to 3rd overall in the event. Relay, by far, challenged all of the clubs more than anything else in the day—Balancing a slinky on your head, ping pong balls on a spoon in your mouth, and catching water balloons didn’t stump the SHRM relay team one bit. Cheer & Dance means weeks of practice, memorizing and perfecting original choreography, and showcasing the result to a sizable audience, eagerly waiting in anticipation. The squad’s captain, Jessica Higashi, continually leads general members to victory, showcasing their rhythm to the Shidler College of Business.

WORKSHOPPERSONAL FINANCE

In September, our Director of Professional Development, Peter Sohn, organized an amazing workshop with Kazu Hayashida, who taught members how to field tough, common interview questions. Hilton Worldwide, for example, uses a video recording medium for its interviewing procedure, as well as most other hotels in the hospitality industry. He shared with SHRMies his personal experiences, when reviewing potential candidates, and advice on what to avoid, as well as tips so that members can ace future career interviews. Members were able to ask questions regarding their personal experiences when interviewing for past jobs. The workshop was very informative and we thank Kazu again for his time and invaluable knowledge.

SOCIAL In October, SHRMies headed to the east side to Sherwoods Beach Park to cool off from the heat. Some members brought their dogs and all shared a beautiful day getting to know each other in the sunshine. There were even some humpback turtles breaching offshore! Games, Music, and good food brought members closer together. For highlights from the hike, feel free to visit our Facebook Page!

COMMUNITY SERVICE

During the month of October, the SHRM Aloha Student Chapter gave back to their community in many ways, one of the most important ways being registering in the bone marrow registry. Gift of Life revolutionized bone marrow donor recruitment, becoming the first registry to collect cheek swabs in lieu of blood samples at donor drives, because it enables recruitment groups to enroll donors without the need for up front paperwork. We simply collected limited information from donors, swabbed their cheeks, and sent them on their way. Later on, they received an email asking them to complete their registration at their convenience. Many of our members brought their pets in order to entice people walking by. In total, we added 50+ donors to the registry. In an allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, a person’s blood-forming stem cells are eliminated and then replaced with new, healthy ones obtained from a donor or from donated umbilical cord blood. The procedure is used as a treatment for certain forms of cancer (including leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and myelodysplastic syndrome), as well as other blood disorders. Thanks to improving technology, the survival rate of this treatment is 75%, up from 62% just 10 years ago. We want to thank everyone who stepped up and swabbed.

This past October, the SHRM Aloha Chapter executive board practiced analyzing a case study and presented recommendations to a panel of judges, addressing human resource department problems in the case. The exercise served as a preview to the annual competition, held every year by SHRM National, in which cases from real firms are given to students and analyzed, while the team with the best recommendations wins the competition. The panel of judges from our parent chapter, SHRM Hawaii, offered us back positive and constructive criticism when looking at some of these common HR issues of recruitment, retention, and employee/customer satisfaction. For weeks, along with analyzing the case ourselves, each team received two coaches, who aided us as much as possible, without giving away key details. The case both teams struggled with took place within a hospital, had elements of ongoing organizational change, retention issues, low morale issues, and diversity problems. Furthermore, each team had at least one coach that had experience in a major hospital in Hawaii, working within that hospital’s HR department. Using what we learned in the classroom and on the job, each team built a case for their recommendations through research and given facts coming from the case. Although the judges didn’t announce the winner, we eagerly await their decision.
