A Moment with MauriceGreeting Nobles,

It is hard to believe that the first month has passed and it is time for another article. What a busy month it has been.

As you all have probably heard by now, the Board of Di-rectors have received and accepted the resignation of our res-taurant manager. Joyce was a wonderful asset to Ararat Shrine and we will truly miss her and wish her the very best on her new adventures.

We have hired a new restaurant manager, Mary Bauer, she arrives at Ararat Shrine with a wealth of knowledge, very im-pressive background and a wonderful following. Please make her welcome to Ararat, get to know her, and work with her on your upcoming events.

The Divan ladies have the child care room up and running. It is ready for visitors with little feet, and with that being said if you would like to use the child care room for one of your upcom-ing events please contact Judi, Barbie, or any of the Divan ladies for the requirements for the use of the room. Also the ladies are looking for some donations for the room; they have needs to make the stay of the children more rewarding. Please contact one of ladies for details of what they need.

Last but certainly not least, we have a Ceremonial coming up on March 15th, the First Cer-emonial Master has put together a brand new format for the Ceremonial–something that has not been done at Ararat. Please plan to attend and make this a very special day for the new Nobles. I am very honored and proud to tell all of you the honoree for this Spring Ceremonial is Charlie Swafford. If you have any friends or family that you would like to invite into the Shrine, please have them ready for the ballet box at the March stated meeting.

I leave you with one last thought for the month: Membership, membership, membership. Nobles, without growth we will find it very hard to turn “Dreams to Reality.”

Hospital News

Hospital Van DriversIf you are a member of Ararat Shrine you are encouraged to call the Hospital Trans-

portation Office (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and become one of those men who transport our children to the St. Louis Hospital. This will be one of the most rewarding activities you will ever experience.

We encourage every man in Ararat to become a driver. It will require you to go to your State Driver’s License Office and obtain a copy of your driving record. As a matter of fact, all drivers need to bring their records up to date in this manner.

A big Thank You to the following Nobles who have driven the Hospital Van in the month of January!

Notes from Board of Governors St. Louis Shriners Hospital for ChildrenBY WAYNE SPENCER P.P.

First, let me say it is an honor to represent Ararat Shrine Temple as an Associate Member of the Board of Governors of the St. Louis Shriners Hospital for Children. I will be providing some comments each month of what is happening at the St. Louis Hospital. February was my second meeting and I have joined three committees. They are Community

Relations and Development Committee, Patient Referral Committee and the Telemedicine Com-mittee. The Board meets on the third Wednesday of each month. If you have questions or sugges-tions regarding the three above mentioned committees, please contact me. Efforts are being made to encourage more use of the Telemedicine Rooms where applicable. Also, please do not hesitate to refer patients to the hospital. Pick up some referral cards from the Temple lobby and hand them out to those with children in need.

There are exciting times ahead for the St. Louis Hospital. There will be a 90 Year Anniversary Celebration on August 22 and 23rd of this year and promises to be a big event. Other events will be posted in the Buzz and facebook as they arrive. Also remember, if your unit or club would like to visit the old hospital before it closes, you might want to consider getting it done prior to No-vember 2014. Please contact Tammy Robbins at 314-872-7837 or Susan Kelly at 314-692-6413 of the Community Development Department. Please schedule your tour at least 3 weeks prior to preferred date.

Construction of the new hospital is progressing well and projected move dates are expected to be met. For current updates, please refer to the Hospital website at: http://www.shrinershospitals-forchildren.org/en/locations/stlouis/new%20hospital%20construction%20updates.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Van Drivers for their efforts in transport-ing our kids to the Hospital. These Nobles are very much appreciated by the Doctors and staff of the St. Louis Hospital, and we as brother nobles should thank them and the Hospital Committee for the very important work they do.

Until next month.

It’s about time for mid-term exams, so it must be time for a review. Or, maybe, after drinking all that wine, we all need to hear it again.

The glasses that we drink from should be as simple as possible: no cutting, no colors, and no fancy shapes. Glasses should have a stem, and they should be narrower at the top to concentrate and retain the aroma.

Screwpulls are pretty nearly idiot-proof, and that means they’re probably the best tools to un-cork the wine bottle. There are other types of corkscrews, but why?

If you ever fail to finish a bottle of fine wine, get some kind of gadget to keep air from contact-ing the wine left in the bottle. Oxygen will damage wine it contacts.

Serving temperatures should be lower for white wines than for red wines.Better to serve a wine too cool than too warm. There is no need to decant a wine unless it has thrown a deposit. Or, unless you want to look

cool.Traditionally, red wines are served with red meat. White wines are served with white meats

and fish. Match the wine to the whole dish, not just the main ingredient. And, match the weight of the

food with the weight of the wine. The traditional order of serving wines is white before red, young before old. But, lifestyles

have changed, so this doesn’t have to be taken too literally.Choosing wine in a restaurant is usually a compromise between what you want and what is

available. A good wine waiter will be able to give advice, and will probably enjoy showing off his knowledge.

Most importantly, have fun and enjoy your wine. It’s supposed to make you feel good!

Well, here we are in the month of May, which meansthe parade season has started. Hope that everyone hada good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. InMarch, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome. He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play, however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.Art had said before we got started that his grandsonwas here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that wemight have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. Hepassed away at the young age of 100, a milestonewhich he turned last August. All our prayers and goodwishes go out to the rest of his family. He was oneNoble that stood out above the rest in every way possible. He is truly missed.

Next we have a little bit about the O.B. SpringDance. It may not have been the best turnout we haveever had, but President Waco still did an outstandingjob. He made sure that those who did make it reallyhad a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” toour President. And let’s not forget our ladies for having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A

GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Wacoand the rest of us as well.

Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’ssee! It was reported that our President Waco, who alsoplays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratchhis back with one hand and continue to play well withthe other. Who knew?

On another note, the O.B. would like to welcomeback Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to Englandfor a little while but had to come back because he didnot have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that hewas having a great time over there with his wife, andgot to go and see his son as well. So all in all the tripmay have been short but the time was well spent.

Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from thepop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco wouldjust like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't havedone it without us. Saturday was the best day. It wascrowded but we all managed to make it through.Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout. So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of thenobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! Hopeto see you in the fall for the next one.

Til then, be safe.

ORIENTAL BANDBy Dave Wilbanks, Scribe

Well, here we are in the month of May, which means

the parade season has started. Hope that everyone had

a good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. In

March, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.

rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome.

He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play,

however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.

Art had said before we got started that his grandson

was here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that we

might have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-

ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. He

passed away at the young age of 100, a milestone

which he turned last August. All our prayers and good

wishes go out to the rest of his family. He was one

Noble that stood out above the rest in every way possible.

He is truly missed.Next we have a little bit about the O.B. Spring

Dance. It may not have been the best turnout we have

ever had, but President Waco still did an outstanding

job. He made sure that those who did make it really

had a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” to

our President. And let’s not forget our ladies for

having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A

GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Waco

and the rest of us as well.

Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’s

see! It was reported that our President Waco, who also

plays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratch

his back with one hand and continue to play well with

the other. Who knew?

On another note, the O.B. would like to welcome

back Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to England

for a little while but had to come back because he did

not have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that he

was having a great time over there with his wife, and

got to go and see his son as well. So all in all the trip

may have been short but the time was well spent.

Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.

had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from the

pop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco would

just like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't have

done it without us. Saturday was the best day. It was

crowded but we all managed to make it through.

Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout.

So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of the

nobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! Hope

to see you in the fall for the next one.

Til then, be safe.

ARARAT’S OWN COUNTRY CLASSICS By Jeff Davis, Scribe

There’s an old Vince Gill song titled, “Look at Us.”

I think that fits as a pretty good theme for this month.

“LOOK AT US”!!!!!! We’re going to be very busy all

around the jurisdiction.

First, we will be playing at the Abdallah Shrine’s

Rodeo Kick-off Party on May 1. This is a great party and

they have a wonderful time and have been very good to

us as a band. We enjoy playing for them every year.

We will be at Ararat on the 15th playing for the

Ceremonial. This is a fundraiser for the Temple so

come on out, enjoy some good music and help the

Temple with your donations.

And, of course, we love playing at the Warsaw

Shrine Club’s pre parade party on June 4th. We have as

much fun as they do and really enjoy playing for all of

the Ladies and Nobles.

That should bring things up to date. Til next

month……..

He Will Be Missed Dearly By the Croft Family

We went to another nearly hidden event that we should all know about. This time it was a dinner at Richmond Shrine Club. Wasn’t really a big deal, but it should have been huge. I guess this would be called a synergistic event, because it served as a fundraiser for

the club, while it brought together the members of a Shrine Club and the members of two or three Masonic Lodges. There was no exotic entertainment, just good food, good conversation, and good friends. Why don’t we do that more often?

Less happily, I missed an event at the Jackson County Shrine Club. I guess I just wasn’t pay-ing attention, because that party slipped by me and just didn’t make it onto my calendar. I’ve heard nothing but good reports from those who didn’t miss it, but it’s too late for me.

I don’t miss too many events, but when I do, it seems that it’s always my loss. When you miss something, it’s most likely to be your loss, too. The answer is to watch the Buzz and this paper, and mark your calendar. Let’s all have fun!

If you haven’t already got the word, the Spring Ceremonial on March 15 will be a lot dif-ferent from anything we’ve done in the past. The first difference you will notice will be that it’s a lot shorter. Then you will notice that it will be open to the public. And, the Pub Crawl will be a lot more fun than in the past. And I may be completely wasting ink, because you may not get

this until after it’s all over!I know it’s too late to say anything about the Margaritaville Party, the Chili Contest, or the

Mardi Gras Party, except that I had a good time. But the Denim and Diamonds Dance, the Spring Swap Meet, and the Potentate’s Ball are still

a few days away, so don’t forget those good times. This is the third Denim & Diamonds Dance, and the first two were really good. It is difficult to identify the characteristics that make a good party, but this one has several of those characteristics. It’s on March 29 and the cost is $7.00 per person. And they raffle off a diamond necklace!

You know about the Swap Meet, and a lot of us go there to help. Even more of us go for fun. You can see a lot of old cars, a few newer cars, some really unique cars. And more car parts then you can count. There will be some motorcycles, tons of tools, some things that you can’t even identify, and gobs of “stuff.” About the only thing I’ve never seen is a belligerent old grouch. The Meet is April 12 & 13, just south of downtown Lathrop on Hiway 33. Of course, we need help there; everything from parts haulers to Nobles that just wander around, smile, and offer to help at whatever.

And, the Potentate’s Ball! It’s the adult version of a High School Spring Prom. It’s a de-licious meal served in beautiful surroundings among friends. Its beautiful women in gorgeous dresses, with fairly handsome men in suits and tuxedos. It will be April 26 at the Airport Hilton, where rooms will be reasonable.

I like to have fun, and fun is best when shared with friends. I’ve never met a Shriner who wasn’t my friend. Come join me at all these events. Please.

Let’s talk about the Ceremonial coming March 15th! Expect a lot! A new format will be introduced to better respect your

time. We’ll have a rejuvenated Ararat Club and Restaurant to enjoy with each other and our guests. Video games, dart boards and juke box! Let’s talk about this new “Shrine Spirit Pack”! It’s valued over $300 worth of Shrine goodies. And the band, Bailroot, scheduled for Saturday night of the Ceremonial will please everyone! They’re fantastic! Go to www.bailrootband.com

Everybody has been asking me “What is this “Shrine Spirit Pack” all about?” We have put together a group of items that will help the Candidates, and their Ladies, get acclimated to the Shrine Culture. Included in their $150 ini-tiation fee, we will be giving all Spring Cer-emonial Candidates;

• An Embroidered Fez (Which they can upgrade to a jeweled, for the differ-ence.)

• A Shrine, Shrine Lady and a Masonic car emblem

• 10 “Reserved” tickets to the 2014 Shrine Circus

• Shrine drink coasters• A 2013 Shrine Circus cup• A Shrine membership/parade t-shirt• A 2013 Crcus t-shirt• A Ladies Lapel Pin• Bingo Daubers• Party favors for upcoming party eventsWhat a deal! Your Candidate will be ready

to encompass the Shrine spirit from day one! How about the new modernized Ceremo-

nial! Most Nobles aren’t required to show up until 3:00pm. But if you want, you may show up early and have lunch with the new class, or just hang out in our new invigorated Restau-rant/Bar. This format is an attempt to create a better experience for our Nobles as well and the new Candidates and their Ladies.

You’ll be able to enjoy the band Baliroot for free as long as you attend the Fezzing and Arch Production! If you cannot make it until

5:30, it’s only $5 per person. It doesn’t get any better than that!

Nobles, this is the year we make a differ-ence. Let’s be sure to share our legacy with all our relatives and neighbors. Let’s make this Ceremonial be the largest attended in years. And let’s show our Shrine spirit by supporting our new nobles. I look forward to seeing you at the Shrine!

RAKLA SHRINE CLUBBy Ernie Taylor, Scribe

We finally had great weather for ourmeeting in April: no rain, no snow, no 20degrees and windy! Not that the weatherhad ever discouraged our members. Wehad the same great turnout, be the weath-er good or not so good!

Dignitaries attending this month wereLiaison Officer Dave Bushakra and LadyMolly, and Ambassador Curt Karnes andLady Sue. These two couples truly repre-sent good works and good fellowship forthe Shrine and we look forward eachmonth to seeing them.

We were happy to welcome back Daveand Nora Hutchison. They brought backa “truckload” of fish and invited us to theirhomefor the June meeting and a fish fry!

Dave, incidentally, won the 50/50 draw-ing, but that was in no way connected tothe invitation. We would never use anysort of bribery to get Dave and Nora to fixfish for us!

Our guest speaker was Sally Nance,Administrator for the Excelsior SpringsHospital. She gave us a brief history onthe hospital and all the improvementsthey have made, and the new independentliving center completed recently.

Our May meeting will be held again atCatricks Café in Lawson. Tell yourMasonic friends what fun and fellowshipwe have, and bring someone with you tothe next meeting.

BLUE SPRINGS SHRINE CLUBBy Fred Harle, P.P.

They always say, “April Showers BringMay Flowers.” Well, here it is April 10th,haven’t seen much rain here in our greatcity of Blue Springs, MO, but you knowwhat, if you are like me those May flowersare already starting to bloom. You knowthe kind I’m talking about, those pretty lit-tle yellow flowers that we spend a smallfortune trying to eliminate from our yardevery year. Yep, they are called dande-lions. If you don’t have any I’ll be morethan happy to bring you some of the onesfrom my front yard. That is just before Itry to get rid of them.

Today Jennie’s brother Kenny and hisLady Emma who live in Warrensburg, MOdrove up to see us. We met at Bob Evan’sRestaurant in Lee’s Summit, after whichall four of us visited the Swap Meet. Wow,what a super extravaganza. An even big-ger surprise was to be greeted by Ill. SirKevin Sleyster and being chauffeured byour Recorder, Mike Wheeler. Upon enter-ing the rear gate we were greeted by thehardest working Shriner I know , NobleMac McWilliams. Try and keep up withthis Noble and you’ll find it’ s impossible. Thanks Mac for all that you do for Ararat.

Let me tell you about our March BSSCmeeting. To begin with, our meetings withNoble Bill Fickle at the helm just get bet-ter and better . Following the usual open -ing ceremonies for our Shrine Club, we getdown to the business of trying to catch thefatted calf so to speak. See picture of ourDivan Liaison Officer, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby followed by alegion of hungry Shriners. We also treatour ladies okay . Please note picture withladies, Carol Newport, Vivian Snell,Marguerite Merryman, and Pat Stansell.

Thank you ladies for continuing to shareBSSC with all the rest of us.

Our President, Bill Fickle arranged aspectacular program for our entertainment.Jordan Mitchell, a member of DeMolay, presented a Ceremony of Life in full form.Wow, super impressive, you could hear apin drop. What a treat to see and hear sucha talented young man.

We treat our dignitaries with respect, and it’s always a pleasure to put out the oldBSSC welcome mat for any and all templeofficers. Please don’t wait for a specialinvite. The door is always open and wewant you to come and join us. See photoof President Bill Fickle, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby, and AmbassadorBud Higginbotham.

Our good buddy Noble Lou Sohn hadsome stents inserted close to his heart andhe is progressing great. He heard aboutPast President Bill Clinton doing okaywith his so he got some.

Last, but also a very important part ofour BSSC team is Noble James Gar gotta. He puts together our club newsletter , sec-ond to none, that keeps all our membersinformed about what’s going to happen, and what has happened. Not only aboutanything and everything in and about ourclub, but other clubs, uniformed units, andour temple in general. If you don’t believeit come see for yourself! BSSC meets onthe 4th Monday night of each month at6:30 pm in the American Legion Buildingon 7 Hwy in Blue Springs, MO. Call us,we’ll tell you how to get here.

That’s enough for this time! So untilnext time, a hug doesn’ t cost anything togive or get. Think about it!!!!!!

Nothing Stops Our Car Swaps BY COL. BILLIE

“It’s our 18th year and 32nd and 33rd Swap Meets and we thank all you good ol’workers for making it so successful,” says Mac McWilliams (seen here) Our first Chairman says: “Not rain or mud, heat or cold… or lost leases .stopped us!”

WOW! By noon our first day, we had more than 20,000 visitors with us. From the start, Mac had “gung-ho!” support from Dr. Charles A. Eddy, PP, our 1997 Assistant Rabban. Highly regarded for his community service, he was a K.C. Councilman in 1999…and also our Potentate. POTE-DOC could twist arms with NO PAIN!...both sides of the State Line. How about that move to The Woodlands in 1999. BRAVO! We all got well!

We placed ads in national auto magazines and local media, but the best ads came from Mac and Tom Burke driving thousands of miles to other Swap Meets. They passed out our flyers to vendors, inviting them to our April event. Wow! Eyeball to eyeball selling is hard to beat! It paid off in big crowds and income that prompted us to start a second August event in 2000. Potentate Don Woolen reasoned: one is so good, let’s have two!

We stayed 10 happy years at The Woodlands…but DOG-GONE! The dogs were gone…no more races and The Woodlands closed going into 2009.

But along came B.J. to save the day! That’s B.J. Richardson P.P., who was Assistant Rabban in 2009. On short notice he got WORLDS OF FUN for April. What a popular spot and they loved having us! We had big crowds but there was traffic flow and space problems. So off we go to Lee’s Summit for the August event and stayed there through 2012. But the property was for sale and not permanent. Then HOT DOGGIES!

Last year we found a near perfect spot: Antique Show Grounds in SUPER friendly Lathrop, MO. It’s great, according to our Assistant Rabban Steve Johnson and Co-Chairmen Butch Johnson and Gary Seger. We have three Johnsons: Steve, Butch and Buck…not re-lated, but Swap Meet brothers!

THE BUCKS STOP WITH BUCK! Seen here, Buck Johnson (of BINGO fame) handles a mountain of our Swap Meet

paper work including sale of vendor spaces. He works for months ahead of each event and asks us to help

whatever hours we can on April 11-12-13 in Lathrop. Set up help is needed on Friday and BUY-SELL action

is Saturday and Sunday. HELP!

Please work! Call 816-923-1975 Ask for Johnson, Johnson or Johnson….or Eager Seger!

April 19, 1997 we opened on

an abandoned air strip at the ole Richards-Gebaur Airport. We

wondered: “Will thisdog hunt?” Before dawn

the answer came: fainthonking of horns grewlouder…then the roarof big rig engines as

vendors came inWE HAD A WINNER!

February Temple Meeting NotesBY STEVE DOWDY, PHOTOS BY RON NUTTER

Illustrious Sir Maurice Camerlynck called the February, 2014, meeting to order at 7:36 pm, February 12, 2014, in Bennett Auditorium.

Prior to the Call to Order, the Ararat Dix-ieland Band had entertained us since 7:00 pm.

Assistant Rabban Steve Johnson informed the Captain of the Guard, without error, that the Potentate was about to open Ararat Temple for business. That done, Captain of the Guard Bud Higginbotham informed the Outer Guard, and then reported to Noble Johnson, who informed Illustrious Sir Maurice that the Temple was un-der a double and trusty guard.

Chief Rabban Clarence Kirby surveyed the crowd and informed the Potentate that our Temple was free from jeopardy as there were none present save members of our order. The Potentate replied “’Tis well.”

Oriental Guide Henry McDaniel prepared the Altar.

High Priest and Prophet Randy Berry re-membered our Nobles who had been visited by the Black Camel and gave the invocation.

The Legion of Honor presented the colors, accompanied by the Dixieland Band.

The assembled Nobles, led by Chief Rabban Kirby recited the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance.

Noble Jacque Mote, accompanied by the Dixieland Band, led us in singing the National Anthem.

Recorder Mike Wheeler read the minutes of the January Meeting, which led to a motion to dispense with the reading for the rest of the year. Hard copies of the minutes will be distributed at the meeting. The motion passed by voice vote.

Several members of the Abdallah Shrine Divan were registered as visitors.

Recorder Mike Wheeler reported that there was one Petition for Creation and one Petition for Association. Those Petitions were approved by secret ballot. Recorder Mike then read one Petition for Affiliation, four for Restoration, three Demits and no Petitions for Remission. All are a matter of record.

Treasurer Nick Baldi gave the Treasurer’ Report. We had some money, we spent some money, we received some money, and we’ve got some money left.

The Ballroom Dancers presented dona-tions in memory of Noble Wally Busbea to the Hospital Fund and the Sound System Fund. A Patio Brick was also purchased.

Illustrious Sir John Hay, P.P., presented a donation to Telemedicine.

Noble Mike DeGraff presented two checks to the Children’s Prosthesis Fund from the Sedalia Shrine Club Ladies.

The Abdallah Shrine Divan Members were recognized:

• Illustrious Sir Kevin Larson• Assistant Rabban Garry Dial• Oriental Guide Bennie Smith• First Ceremonial Master Doug Voss• Treasurer Chris Muro, P.P.Illustrious Sir Larson spoke briefly, sug-

gesting that Ararat and Abdallah should get together for a few events during the year. He presented a custom made cigar stand to Mau-rice for those times when the smoke gets inter-rupted. Ill. Sir Maurice invited Abdallah to join

us at the Marshall Parade.Ill. Sir Maurice talked about the value of

his counterparts and expressed appreciation for their friendship,

Chief Rabban Kirby took the podium to tell us about our 2014 Circus. He introduced his Circus Committee of Marshal Jim Kerns, Noble Matt Terryberry, Noble Kevin Broder-ick, Noble Mark Koontz, Noble Patrick Hoesly, Noble Mac McWilliams, Noble Brent March-ant, Noble Scott Towler, Noble John Ropcke, and Noble John Saul.

Circus promotional items are on display in the Business office.

Assistant Rabban Steve Johnson reported on preparations for the Spring Swap Meet, April 11, 12, and 13. Nobles Butch Johnson and Gary Seger are in charge again this year.

Noble Steve also told us that the Divan has held eight meetings this year to consider chang-es to the Restaurant operations to eliminate the subsidy required to keep it open. Due to resig-nations, future events will be catered by one of three pre-qualified caterers. That will apply to both outside events and Shrine events.

High Priest & Prophet Randy Berry talked about this year’s Vidalia Onion Sales Program. Noble Jim Lamb will be helping this year but will not be in charge. Another supplier has been located that will give us better prices. The pro-gram has changed this year to provide opportuni-ties for higher profits and higher sales. Shrine Clubs that order 100 bags more than in 2013 will be given a 5% discount on their entire order. The basic cost will be lowered to $6.75 per 10 lb bag, and discounts will apply to that cost.

Bingo Chairman Buck Johnson said that Bingo attendance has been down due to the bad weather this year, but he still needs workers.

Nevertheless, the Bingo crew presented a check for $3,000 to the General Fund, marking the second month of this year when their goal was not met. For the month of January, the players donated $667.00.

Hospital Committeeman Steve Hanchette told us that the Hospital Committee is still in need of Hospital Van drivers. The entire van transportation driving load is falling on only six drivers! We have more Green Passes from Southwest Airlines. Ararat sponsored 25 new patients in 2013.

Membership Chairman Rod McGrath told us that our first Ceremonial will be on March 15, at Ararat. A new program has been estab-lished, with a total cost of $300.00 to each new Noble, including Initiation, dues, and a Fez. They will also get a whole bunch of other stuff. Noble Rod also told us that Harry S. Truman Lodge meets on the fourth Thursday of each month, at the Temple, and it is doing very well.

Our Spring Ceremonial will be differ-ent this time. The Ceremonial will be open to the public from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, with the Pub Crawl starting at 5:00 pm. There will be a $5.00 cover charge for the Pub Crawl.

Parade Chairman Don Pittier told us that there will be no parades in March or April. Our first parade will be in Richmond and Missouri City in May. If you plan to operate your vehicle in a parade this year, you should get your pa-rade sicker from the office now.

Illustrious Sir Maurice presented a Circus Jacket to Ill. Sir Fred Harle, P.P.

We have Bingo games every Thursday Night, and we need help!

High Priest and Prophet Randy Berry gave the benediction and the meeting adjourned at 9:19 pm.

Ararat Needle GuildBY JERRIE DOWDY

A big thank you to the Ladies and Nobles of Northland Shrine Club for their very nice donation. Through the years the

Needle Guild has depended on donations, both monetary and material, to continue providing the hospitals with the necessary items they re-quest.

February was Needle Guild Founders Day. Our “Shrine Sewing Circle” was organized February, 1937 by the First Lady, Mrs. Herb “Babe” Ford. There were no funds available for them, so each lady donated $1 and Mrs. Ford donated 5 second-hand sewing machines.

In 1942 and 1943 the Ladies, in addition to sewing two Tuesdays a month for the Shrine, volunteered to sew two more Tuesdays for the Red Cross. In 1947 Illustrious Sir Chet Hayes changed the name to Ararat Shrine Needle Guild.

Needle Guild meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month (except July, Aug. & Dec.) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Ben-nett Auditorium. We also have a short busi-ness meeting, enjoy lunch and visit with each other while working to help the children of the Shrine Hospitals. We would love to see you at the next Needle Guild meeting.

We kicked off the New Year with our first Club Meeting on Jan-uary 27th. We had a great showing and the food was great. Noble Bill Fickle, owner of Side Pockets in Blue Springs, pro-

vided the main course of Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes & Green Beans and our Ladies provided the rest.

Our new President, Noble Phil Meisenheimer started the meeting at 7:00 p.m., we ate and then we got right to business. We were happy to

see Noble Delbert Barker and Lady Mary back after recovering from his surgery. We heard that Lady Kristi Negrete was scheduled for surgery on February 5th. We wish her well on her recovery.

We proposed and approved the 2014 Budget and discussed some proposed fundraisers. We also talked about some of the fun things that we could do this year as a club.

Speaking of fun outings, our first of 2014 will be a Maverick’s game. The Mavericks game is set for

March 23rd. It starts at 4:05 vs. the Quad City Mallards. This is going to be a great time. We have a suite for 23 people, which is currently full. We also have 16-20 people sitting in the seats. It looks like we’re going to have a big group.

Many of our Club Members attended the Ararat Aides Sock Hop January 25th and we all had a great time. The Elvis impersonator was great.

We meet the fourth Monday of each month. The meeting time is 6:30 p.m. in the Lantern Room at the American Legion Post 499 on 7HWY in Blue Springs. Come join us and be a part of the fun! Give us a call at 816-228-2401 if you’d like to attend and see what we are all about.

Sedalia Shrine ClubBY RON HINKLE, SCRIBE

2013 ended with a Sedalia Shrine Club Membership Dinner that was nothing short of spec-tacular. Charles Brogdon, our 2013 President, highlighted the year that was and gave his heartfelt gratitude to all of our faithful volunteers that made the year a resounding success. He

then turned the reigns over to our 2014 President, Kenny Martin. Attending the dinner was Illustrious Sir Maurice Camerlynck, who outlined a portion of his

schedule as Potentate of Ararat Shrine for 2014, along with Oriental Guide, Henry McDaniel Jr. Also in attendance from Ararat were Vern Hilliard and his Lady Susan, Mike DeGraff and his Lady Esther and Bill Boynton, our 2014 Ambassador. We had guests from Warsaw Shrine Club, Boon-slick Shrine Club, Houn Dawg Shrine Club, Saline County Shrine Club and Golden Valley Shrine Club. There was also a good showing from our own Sedalia Shrine Club.

We want to thank our friends from the GoldWing Road Riders who presented a check to our St. Louis Hospital Representative in the amount of $1,500. Thank you folks so much for sharing your volunteerism in raising funds for the children of our St. Louis Hospital. Our Hospital Rep-resentative also received checks for over $5,000 from the Ladies of our very own Sedalia Shrine Club. Our Ladies, as always, make us very proud. Thank you so much.

A plaque was awarded to David & Stephanie Scheid from Sedalia Food & Vending, for the donation of their time and breakfasts. It’s folks like you that make it possible for folks like us to keep on keeping on. Our special children also thank you.

Our officers were ceremoniously sworn in and now 2014 is in good hands. The best of luck to President, Kenny Martin; Vice President, Roger Veith; Treasurer, Jerry Fillinger and Secretary, Bill Sams.

The club is planning a Dance with a band in April so stay tuned and plan on attending this club fellowship. Kenny Martin and his Lady Kathy appreciate your patronage of all our club events.

Our golf season will be kicking off very soon. Remember our membership dues and cart stor-age payments will be due April 1st. We are looking forward to another successful year on our golf course. Come out and enjoy the game, Sedalia Shrine Club, Elm Hills style.

Roger Veith and company put on a Super Bowl Party to remember, and continues to serve our patrons with all the tools that make celebrations possible. Come in and enjoy good company and good times.

Our Breakfasts remain a necessary fundraiser in keeping our club alive. Please come out and help our Breakfast volunteers or be a patron and enjoy a very good meal for only $6.00. The time is from 7:00 am to 10:30 am the 1st Saturday of every month.

The Fun-Kor will kick its Parade Season off at Bagnell Dam on March 15th. This is always a good parade and we enjoy strutting our stuff for the crowds.

We lost one of our Ladies in February so when you hit your knees pray the good Lord will comfort the family of Connie Welpman and a special prayer for Fun-Kor Director Stan Schierholz for the loss of his Lady. Remember our sick and disabled and never forget those who put them-selves in harms way to keep our dreams alive.

They always say, “April Showers BringMay Flowers.” Well, here it is April 10th,haven’t seen much rain here in our greatcity of Blue Springs, MO, but you knowwhat, if you are like me those May flowersare already starting to bloom. If you don’t have any I’ll be morethan happy to bring you some of the onesfrom my front yard. That is just before Itry to get rid of them.

Due to Doug’s untimely passing Ill. Sir Maurice Camerlynck has appointed Noble Ian Ramage to the position of Director of the Greeters for 2014.

Ararat Ladies Without NoblesBY MARVA MCARTHUR-LAFON, SCRIBE

potentate Maurice Camerlynck assisted by Lady Judi, installed the fol-lowing 2014 officers at the January meeting. There were 17 members in attendance.

President – Donna Morgan Scribe – Marva McArthur-LaFon

Vice President – Dorothy Breece Treasurer – Gerry TetlowSecretary – Barbara Greeley Historian – Erna Murphy Asst. Secretary – Elaine Graham Chaplain – Elaine Graham

We were saddened by the loss of Lady Peggy Allen and will be presenting a donation to the Transportation Fund in her memory.

A beautiful red rose was given to Barbara Greeley to celebrate her January Birthday. We enjoyed treats of chocolate éclairs and cream puffs with our coffee and iced tea. A big thank you to Barbara Miller, Elaine Graham and Henrietta Mor-ton for providing our refreshments and table decorations. Five lucky ladies each won a snowman table decoration with a surprise gift bundled up inside. Looks like they may be all prepared for our usual February snowy “hibernating” weather.

At our February meeting we listened to the superb, lively music performed by Denny Osburn on the keyboard backed up by Harry S. Truman, the statue over-looking his right shoulder.

Table decorations were Valentine bud vases topped with cuddly polar bears and refreshments of chocolate éclairs and cupcakes. A big thank you to Mary Goodman and Colleen Jader.

Welcome to our newest member, Jackie Burke. We were saddened to hear Elaine Graham is ill with shingles and Lois Mc-

Dowell fell on the ice recently and has a leg injury. Anna Mae Hopkins will handle our future drawings. A gorgeous Happy Birthday rose was given to Marva McAr-thur-LaFon. A table will be reserved for our group at the provost Chili Cook-Off. We are all enjoying this brief spell of spring-like weather and hope that it lasts a while longer.
