Installing/UninstallingShredItX

HowtoInstallShredItX1. DragtheShredItXfoldertowhereveryoukeepapplicationsoftware.

HowtoshredDiskFreeSpaceToshredtheconfidentialfilesyouhavepreviouslydeleted,youneedtoshredtheareaonyourharddrivecontainingde-allocatedmemory,callthediskfreespace.Ifyouhavealotoffreespaceoraslowdisk(likeaUSBharddisk),shreddingfreespacecantakeawhile,soyouonlywanttodoitoncewhenyouinitiallyinstallShredIt.Toensureallfuturedocumentsaresecurelydeleted,dropthemontotheShredItshreddernottheTrash.IfyouaccidentallyputaconfidentialdocumentintotheTrash,andemptytheTrash,thenyouneedtoshredthefreespaceagain.

Ifyoushredthefreespaceonadiskbymistake,don'tpanic.Thiswillonlyshredyourfreespace,notyourdata.We'vemadeiteasytoshredthefreespaceofadiskandmoredifficulttoshredthecontentsofadisk.Thisisintentionalsothatyoudon'taccidentallyshredthecontentsofadisk-i.e.yourdata.

ToShredthefreespaceonadisk,followtheseinstructions:

IfyouquitfromShredItXbeforeitisfinishedshreddingthefreespaceonadisk,ShredItXwillleaveaworkingfiles(calledShredItXFreespace)attherootoftheharddrive,takingupspaceonyourharddisk.Torecoverthespace,putthefileintheTrashandemptytheTrashorshredthefreespaceagain.

HowtoshredpreviouslydeletedfilesToshredfilesyouhavepreviouslydeleted,youneedtoshredtheareaonyourharddrivecontainingde-allocatedmemory,callthediskfreespace.

HowtoenableautomaticscheduledDiskFreeSpaceshreddingTheeasiestwaytoensurethatyouhaveerasedallconfidentialdatathatyouhavedisposedofistoshredyourdiskfreespaceonaregularbasis.YoucanconfigureShredItXtodothisautomatically,onwhateverscheduleyouprefer.Justkeepinmindthatshreddingdiskfreespace,especiallyonalargedrivemaytakequitealongtime,andyourcomputermustberunningandnotasleepinorderforShredItXtoaccomplishthistask,somakesurenottoschedulefreespaceshreddingatatimewhenthecomputerissleepingorhasbeenshutdown.

Ifyoushredthefreespaceonadiskbymistake,don'tpanic.Thiswillonlyshredyourfreespace,notyourdata.We'vemadeiteasytoshredthefreespaceofadiskandmoredifficulttoshredthecontentsofadisk.Thisisintentionalsothatyoudon'taccidentallyshredthecontentsofadisk-i.e.yourdata.

ToautomaticallyShredthefreespaceonadisk,followtheseinstructions:

Onceyouhaveconfiguredtheschedulepreferences,ShredItXwillshredthefreespaceoftheselecteddisk(s),provided

• yourcomputerisbothrunningandnotasleepand

• Ifyouarerunningscheduledfreespaceshreddingonanexternaldrive,italsomustbebothconnectedandmountedonthedesktop

Thismaytakealongtime.IfyouquitfromShredItXbeforeitisfinishedshreddingthefreespaceonadisk,ShredItXwillleaveaworkingfiles(calledShredItXFreespace)attherootoftheharddrive,takingupspaceonyourharddisk.Torecoverthespace,putthefileintheTrashandemptytheTrashorshredthefreespaceagain.

Howtosafelyshredanalias

DonotdraganaliasontotheShredItXIconanddropit.Doingsowillshredtheoriginalitem,notthealias.

Here’swhy.Whenyoudraganddropanalias,ShredItshredstheoriginalitemthealiaspointsto,notthealiasfileitself.

Forexample,let'ssayyoucreatedanaliasthatpointedtoyourincometaxfile.Ifyoudragthealias,"IncomeTaxFileAlias"thatyoujustcreatedtothetrashcan,thealias"IncomeTaxfileAlias"wouldbemovedtothetrashcan,butthefileitpointsto,"Incometaxfile"wouldremainwhereitwas.That'sbecausethetrashcanispartoftheoperatingsystemandthat'showtheoperatingsystemhandlesaliasfilesdraggedontothetrashcan.However,ShredItisnotpartoftheoperatingsystem-it'sanapplicationprogram.Applicationsprogramsdon'tgetthesameinformationfromtheoperatingsystemasthetrashcandoes.WhenyoudraganAliasfileontoanapplicationprogram,theoperatingsystemresolvesthealiasbeforepassingthefilenameuptotheapplicationprogram.Soifyoudraggedthe"IncomeTaxFileAlias"ontoShredIt,theoperatingsystemwouldresolvethealiasandpassthenameofthefilethealiaspointsto,"Incometaxfile"toShredIt.ShredItwouldthenshredthe"Incometaxfile",justlikeyouhadjustrequestedittodo.

ThisisprobablynotwhatyouwantedShredIttodo.However,thisisnotuniquetotheShredItapplication.AllapplicationsontheMacintoshhandlealiasesthissameway,sincethisishowtheoperatingsystemworks.

• double-clicktheShredItXIcontostarttheprogram,andthenpickthealiasyouwanttoshredusingthe“File”Menu(ShredItX>File>ShredFile)

ErasingaDrive

HowtoerasethecontentsofanExternalHardDriveAnon-startupdiskisanydiskordiskpartitiononyourcomputerthatdoesn’tcontaintheOperatingSystem.

Thisprocedureassumesthatyoudon'thavetheOperatingSystemontheExternalDriveyouareabouttoshred.IntheunlikelyeventthatyoudohavetheOperatingSystemonthisdrive,usethe"Howtoshredthecontentsofthestartupdisk"procedureinstead.

Toshredthecontentsofanon-startup,externalharddrive,followtheseinstructions:

1. Moveallthedata,alltheapplicationsandthepreferencesofalltheapplicationsyouwanttokeepsomewhereelse.Theeasiestwaytodothisistocopytheentirecontentsofyourentireharddrivetoanotherharddrive.

2. UsingtheDiskUtility,(Applications>Utilities>DiskUtility),erasethedisk.Todothis,double-clicktheDiskUtility,selectthe“Erase”tabandselectthedisktoerase.Thenclickthe“Erase”button.

3. Ifrequired,installShredItX.Forfurtherinformation,refertothe“HowtoInstallShredItX”sectionofthisdocument.

4. UsingShredItX,shredthediskfreespaceonthedisk.Forfurtherinformation,refertothe"HowtoshredDiskFreeSpace"sectionofthisdocument.

HowtoerasethecontentsofaUSBFlashDrive

AUSBFlashDriveisthegenerictermforasmall,self-powereddatastoragedevicethatconnectstoacomputerdirectlythroughaUSBport.It'saboutthesizeofapackofchewinggum,andisbothMacandWindowscompatible.Flashdrivesareoftencalledabrandnamesuchaskeydrive,thumbdrive,jumpdrive,andpendrive.

ToshredthecontentsofaUSBFlashdrive,followtheseinstructions:


2. PlugtheUSBFlashDriveintotheUSBportlocatedonyourMac.ThiswillmounttheUSBFlashDrive.

3. MoveallthefilesleftontheUSBFlashDrivefromtheUSBFlashDrivetothetrash.Emptythetrash.

HowtoeraseanoldcomputerusingTargetDiskmodeWhenyoupurchaseanewMacintoshyoucanuseTargetDiskmodetocopyalltheitemsfromyouroldMacintoshontoyournewMacintosh.

Oncethatisdone,andyouhaveloggedintoyournewMacintoshyoucanalsouseTargetDiskmodetocleanuptheoldMacintoshtomakeitreadyfordisposalorsale.

AfterfollowingthisproceduretheoldcomputerwillbeleftwithoutanOperatingSystemandwillnotstartup.TousetheoldcomputerMacOSXmustbeinstalledfromaninstallCDorDVD

WhilemostMacintoshcomputersthatsupportMacOSXalsosupporttargetdiskmodeitispossible,ifyouhaveaveryoldcomputer,thatyourMacintoshwillnotstartupintargetdiskmode.InthatcasepleasefollowoneoftheotherproceduresforshreddingthecontentsofastartupdiskwithoutusingTargetdiskmode.

Dothefollowing:

1. Logintoyournewcomputer

2. StartupyouroldcomputerusingTargetDiskmode(RestartandholddowntheTkeyuntiltheFirewiresymbolisdisplayed)

3. ConnecttheoldcomputertothenewcomputerusingaFirewirecable

4. Theoldcomputerharddiskwillappearonthenewcomputerdesktop

5. UsetheDiskUtilitytoErasetheoldcomputersharddisk

6. UserShredIttoshredthefreespaceontheoldcomputersharddisk

7. Ejecttheoldcomputersharddisk

8. Holddownthepowerbuttonontheoldcomputertoshutitdown.

HowtoerasethecontentsofaHardDrivewithoutusingTargetDiskmodeBeforedisposingofacomputeroraharddrive,werecommendthatyoudisposeofanyfilesyoudon’twantthenextusertobeabletorecover.YoucandothisusingShredIt.

Performingthisfunctionwillshredthedata,(i.e.yourfiles),makingthecomputercleanbydestroyingyourdata.Youareresponsibleforensuringthatyouhaveabackupcopyofanydataorapplicationsyouwanttouseonanothercomputerbeforeyoushredthecontentsofadisk,sincethefilescannotberecoveredfromthediskafterithasbeenshredded.

Ifwhatyouaretryingtodoistoshredpreviouslydeletedfilesonyourcomputer,thisisnotthecorrectproceduretofollow.Youneedtoshredyourfreespace.Forfurtherinformationaboutshreddingfreespace,seethe"AboutShreddingFreeSpace"sectionofthisdocument.

• thesecondinvolvesshreddingthedataandthefreespace,butnottheapplications.Thisisthesimplestwaytocleanthedisk,butislesssecurethanthesecondprocedure,sinceyouruntheriskofhavingsomeconfidentialdatastillretainedinanapplication’scache.

Therearetwoproceduresforshreddingthecontentsofadisk,oneforstartupdisksandasecondforallotherdisks.ThestartupdiskistheoneonyourcomputerthathastheOperatingSystemonit.Ifyouhaveapartitioneddrive,youwillhaveotherdisksaswell.ThesewillnothavetheOperatingSystemonthem.Thereasontherearetwoproceduresisthatyoucannoterasethestartupdisk.So,inordertoerasethediskwiththeOperatingSystemonit,youneedtostartupthecomputerfromtheMacOSXCDthatcamewithyourcomputer.

HowtoshredthecontentsofthestartupdiskAstartupdiskisthediskonyourcomputerthatcontainstheOperatingSystem.Typically,itiscalled“OSXSystem”andmaybetheonlydiskonthesystem.

ThisprocedureassumesthatyouhaveaMacOSXCDfromwhichtore-installtheOperatingSystemandacopyoftheShredItXRegistrationKeysothatyoucanre-installShredItX.

Toshredthecontentsofthestartupdisk,followtheseinstructions:


2. PlugtheUSBFlashDriveintotheUSBportlocatedonyourMac.ThiswillmounttheUSBFlashDrive.

3. InserttheMacOSXInstallDiscCD.ThisreferstoafullMacOSXCDincludedwithyourcomputer,nottoanupdate-onlyCD.

4. RestartthecomputerfromtheCD.Todothis,holdthe“C”keyimmediatelyafterthestartupsound.

5. Usingtheinstalldisk,doan“EraseandInstall”toerasethediskandinstalltheOperatingSystem.Todothis,followtheInstallWizardthatappearsafteryouhavebootedusingtheInstallDisc.Whenyougettothe“SelectDestination”step,selectthedestinationdiskandthenclickthe“Options”button.FromtheOptionsmenu,select“EraseandInstall”.Continuewiththewizard.

First,toshredtheconfidentialfilesyouhavepreviouslydeleted,youneedtoshredtheareaonyourharddrivecontainingde-allocatedmemory,calledthediskfreespace.Forfurtherinformation,pleaserefertothe“HowtoshredDiskFreeSpace”sectionofthisdocument.

Second,tosecurelydeleteconfidentialdocumentsonaon-goingbasis,useashreddertodisposeoftheminsteadofputtingtheminthetrash.IfyouaccidentallyputaconfidentialdocumentintotheTrash,andemptytheTrash,thenyouneedtoshredthefreespaceagain.

Now,ifyouweretoprintyourdocument,senditoff,andshredthedocument,youhaveonlyshreddedthefinalversionofthedocument.Youhavelefttheintermediatecopiesbehindinfreespaceandsomeone(includingyou)couldrunadiskrecoveryutilityandfindsomecontentsoftheintermediatecopies,butnotthefinalversionofthedocument.

Thesolutionistothisistoperiodicallyshreddiskfreespace.Sincethisoperationtakessometime,youmaywanttodoitattheendofeachdayoreachweek.Youcanstarttheprocessjustbeforeyouleaveforthedayanditshouldbedonewhenyoureturninthemorning.ShredItalsoprovidesafreespaceshreddingscheduleinthePreferencessothatyoucaneasilyperformperiodicfreespaceshredding.

Ifyounevereditconfidentialfiles,butyoudoreadthem,youcanjustshredthedocumentssincenosavefileshavebeenleftbehind.
