DANEEN NASTARS

Clinical Instructor, Respiratory Care What is your title? Clinical Instructor Where is your hometown and tell us a little about your personal life? I grew up in Temple, Texas. I came from a very large family with 2 sisters and a brother, which has expanded even more with 10 nieces and nephews. I am an avid Texans fan and season ticket holder. During football season you will see me tailgating and enjoying every home game. I guess you could say I am a dog lover, because I am the owner of 3 Dachshunds. What do you like best about UTMB Galveston and SHP? I started working at UTMB in August 2009 and have really enjoyed my time here with SHP and the RC program. One of the things I like about UTMB and SHP is the friendliness of everyone and the respect everyone shares for one another. What do you like best about the RC program? The things I like best about the RC program at UTMB is the interactions with the students. I have worked in many different aspects of Respiratory Care and working with students has been by far my favorite. The enthusiasm of these students in their classes and in the clinical setting really keeps me going and excited about the future of the RC profession. I am also surrounded by a great faculty that mentor me as I continue to learn my new role as an educator.

37th ANNUAL TAPA CONFERENCE

Dallas, TX

The Texas Academy of Physician Assistants, also known as TAPA, is the premier PA organization in Texas. The mission of TAPA is to represent and serve PA’s statewide and promotes the PA profession through education, quality services, and advocacy of optimal healthcare. Physician Assistants are health care professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. As part of their comprehensive responsibilities, PA’s conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery, and in virtually all states can write prescriptions. TAPA advocates the unique alliance of the physician/physician assistant team. Within the physician/PA relationship, physician assistants exercise autonomy in medical decision-making and provide a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. As the UTMB Class of 2013 TAPA Representative, I had the pleasure of attending the 37th Annual TAPA Conference in Dallas, Texas, February 23-26th 2012. This conference allowed me to see a glimpse of my future in a wonderful career as a Physician Assistant. It was an invaluable experience that was totally worth the five-hour drive from Galveston, Texas. During the event current PA students, including Morgan Halvorsen, Kim Hodges, Margot Rosche, Brooklyn Sandvall, Caitlin Vanderweide, Tamra Warner (UTMB Class of 2012 TAPA Representative), and I were able to attend the student track lectures. The topics presented will be useful as we progress through the Physician Assistant Studies Program and into our careers. The lectures included a Lumbar Puncture workshop, Catheters & Basic Catheter Placement workshop, Surviving PA School with your iOS Device, and Journey to Employment. The Lumbar Puncture workshop was very practical due to the fact that we were able to practice the skill on mannequins. However, the most valuable lecture was Journey to Employment, presented by current TAPA President, Mrs. Trisha Harris-Odimgbe. Her lecture provided a new approach to interviews and the necessary knowledge when it comes time to look for a job. Between the workshops, an awards lunch was held. It was a time to recognize the outstanding people who have had an influence on the PA profession and to present the Texas Physician Assistant Foundation Student Scholarship Recipients. Kim Hodges, UTMB School of Health Professions, PA Class of 2013, was presented with one of the three scholarships. At the end of the day students from Texas PA schools gathered to compete in the TAPA Challenge Bowl. This event challenges the minds of the students as they are presented with board-type questions in a fun competition between teams from different PA schools. Afterward, there was a karaoke competition where the top three winners were presented with cash prizes. I feel honored and very fortunate to be the TAPA Representative for UTMB. As the representative I am able to attend and actively participate in TAPA events and board meetings. Not only did I learn what was going on in the organization, but also things that are currently occurring in the PA profession. It was a pleasure meeting the individuals that make these events possible and make TAPA what it is today. I am really looking forward to becoming more involved in TAPA and excited to see what opportunities await. As a student, I feel that we are the future of the profession and we need to be more involved. As a TAPA representative, it is my goal to carry out the mission of TAPA and to educate others about our profession and encourage others to get involved. JASON PEUGH, PA-S PA Class of 2013

A Very Special Mardi Gras Ball

University of Texas Medical Branch volunteer Amelia Judge, SHP Occupational Therapy student,

is spun while dancing with Chance Geary during the Moody Gardens Mardi Gras Ball for special

people Sunday at the Moody Gardens Convention Center in Galveston.

Published February 13, 2012 in the Galveston Daily News.

One of the most touching

events every year is the Special

People's Ball. A number of

Galveston County's mentally

and physically handicapped

residents get to have their own

ball. One of the neat things

about this event is that the

community is asked to come

out and serve as dance partners

with the participants.

Thousands turn out every year.

This is the 26th year for the

event, which is held at the

Moody Gardens Convention

Center.
