Powered versus Component Style Speaker Systems

    F11

    The active l

    oudspeaker

    system has a

    practical pe

    rformance a

    dvantage tha

    t one should

    point out to

    those

    who could c

    onsider mult

    iple dedicate

    d amplifiers

    an extravag

    ance or even

    hindrance

    when one w

    ould do,

    particularly if

    that one cou

    ld be more ex

    pensive pe

    r channel. Th

    is point is the

    relationship

    of the loudsp

    eaker

    to the amplif

    ier, and it's g

    ot nothing

    to do with pas

    sive crossov

    er componen

    ts. When a m

    anufacturer b

    uilds a

    high perform

    ance outbo

    ard amplifie

    r, the amplif

    ier MUST ac

    commodate

    a wide ran

    ge of loud

    speaker

    impedances

    , some of wh

    ich may be v

    ery unusual.

    In order to d

    o this, the m

    anufacturer n

    eeds not only

    good

    big, heavy,

    and expens

    ive. Unfort

    effort.

    For example

    , my own big

    , outboard,

    muscled

    continuously

    into each ch

    annel, or in

    other words

    , cruise into

    2 ohms at 8

    00 watts, tw

    ice, for 1600

    watts of

    continuous o

    utput, assum

    ing my wall

    socket can

    hang in ther

    e. If we tie t

    hat kind of o

    utput with p

    remium

    sound qualit

    y, that ability

    costs much

    o dollars.

    My particula

    r amp is from

    a nofrills m

    anufacturer,

    so it's still r

    elatively cos

    t effective fo

    r what it is, b

    ut not so

    cheap as I'd

    like so that

    I could buy a

    few more. T

    he extreme

    low impedan

    ce output ca

    pability is ni

    ce to talk

    about, and h

    andy when in

    use as a re

    ference amp

    so that it's

    ready to driv

    e any review

    sample t

    hat comes

    in the door,

    but until I ac

    tually use a

    loudspeaker

    that gets to 2

    ohms over

    any substant

    ial part of the

    higher

    energy portio

    n of the aud

    io spectrum,

    i.e., mid

    into clipping

    distortion b

    y exceeding

    it's substant

    ial voltage s

    wing capacit

    y. It was 'op

    timized' for

    the most

    strenuous cu

    rrent delivery

    scenarios po

    ssible.

    If the design

    er of my parti

    in mind, he

    could have d

    Front of House Rigging Description

The Front of House PA Rigging will consist of (1) CM Loadstar 1 ton (1000lbs) motors per cluster. For the sides, TurboSound will provide the compliment flying system for the TFL-760Ht which will includes the use of steel bars (or swords) which slide through slots machined in the enclosure, and are held captive with 7.5mm safety linch-pins through holes in the swords. The flying system eliminates the needs for flying hardware as integral parts on the enclosure. This allows various configurations while not allowing the cabinet to play no structural part in the flying. The TQ-440 will use suspension bar and chains to ensure we have the appropriate splay angle for front and center seating. (See diagram below) The Left and Right Cluster will require the following: TurboSound Standard Triple Bar (TB-760) TurboSound D ring (DR-760) TurboSound Chain Bridle (CB-760/2) TurboSound Double Clevis Coupler (DC-760) TurboSound Safety Tube Clip (ST-760) The Center Cluster will require the following: TurboSound Suspension Bar (FB-58) TurboSound Suspension Chains (FC-77) TurboSound Tilt Straps TurboSound Eyebolt for TCS-40 (EB 1035)

The main part of the snake system is the stage box where the mic lines are connected into the system and where microphone splitting may take place - either parallel or with transformer isolation. Provisions can be made for ground lift switches, multipin subsnake inputs and return lines sent back to the stage from the mix position. The Rack panel will be mounted in a standard EIA 19 rack. The rack panels are .090" thick aluminum and available with or without backbox enclosure and boxes are 14-gauge cold rolled steel with black powder coat finish.

Multiplin to multipin cables will be used to connect and distribute the signal to the various split locations (FOH, Monitor and Remote Recording). These cables use the Whirlwinds inline W-Series multipin connector (W3 up to 40 channels). The mating configuration of these cables is a male multipin MASS connector wired as an INPUT on one end and a MASS connector wired as an OUTPUT on the other.

The fanouts interconnects the channels from a multipin input to individual connectors. The are required on the ends of each multipin to multipin to connect each input to the console input channels including FOH, Monitor and Recording.

    Main Snake System - Description

The Main Snake System will be comprised of touring standard components from Whirlwind. The system will consist of the following: - 3-way split mass connecter stage box (40 inputs / 16 returns) - (3) Multiline to Multiline Interconnects - (3) FM Series Multipin to Fanout XLRs - (2) 16 Input / 6 Return Medusa Standard Sub Snakes - (1) 12 Input Medusa Standard Sub Snake
