Showcase of primary grant projects - 2020 We are excited to showcase the 13 primary school financial literacy projects from Round 2 of Moneysmart’s partnership with APPA. We’ve included a brief summary of each project and a brief update where possible. Despite the disruptions to project activities and timelines, many schools have been able to adjust their milestones with the aim to finish by the end of the year. Thank you all for your ongoing enthusiasm and participation during such a difficult year. We look forward to seeing all projects come to life and to sharing your stories. Beechworth Primary School, VIC Project name: Growing Entrepreneurs This project is for teachers, students and local community to work collaboratively to plan, grow, maintain, market and financially manage a market garden. This will begin with a foundation of building the understanding of money with our youngest students, through Moneysmart learning, and a dramatic ’shop play space’. Middle and Senior students will be responsible for running and managing the financial aspects of a market garden project. Update: Due to COVID the garden project has not been organised as it is unsure whether the school will remain open. Mathematic Research Project-Project leads collated and presented findings of the teacher and student survey to staff-(Student Voice) Term 3- All year levels to use MoneySmart units of work in their financial mathematics program. Bishop Druitt College, NSW Project name: Primary Entrepreneurs Program This project will utilise the Primary Kidpreneur Challenge, a program of 10 lessons, focusing on students learning the skills of running a small business. This will be undertaken in small groups with a mentor – a teacher, teacher aide or a parent (who is a small business owner) and a secondary student mentor who is studying a commerce subject. The project will conclude with a market pitch day with members of the College Executive or senior staff and will be based on the television show Shark Tank. Students will present their ideas which will be filmed and then made into a short film. Update: Change in staff meant project was handed over to new teacher in July who has taken it on with gusto! Bullyard State School, QLD Project name: Bullyard Community Market Garden This project aims to further build student engagement with the garden program, by allowing them to develop the resources and materials needed for an ongoing fundraising venture that they will benefit both financial literacy from, but also better health outcomes. Financial literacy will be built through such activities including: Purchasing of seeds/equipment/pots/bulk soils etc. Costing, selling and calculating profits on plants sold at markets. Providing fresh produce for school community, including keeping records of ‘savings’ from growing plants as opposed to purchasing from supermarkets. Update:

Update:

• Due to COVID the garden project has not been organised as it is unsure whether the school will remain open. • Mathematic Research Project-Project leads collated and presented findings of the teacher and student survey

to staff-(Student Voice) • Term 3- All year levels to use MoneySmart units of work in their financial mathematics program.

Bishop Druitt College, NSW

Project name: Primary Entrepreneurs Program This project will utilise the Primary Kidpreneur Challenge, a program of 10 lessons, focusing on students learning the skills of running a small business.

Update:

• Change in staff meant project was handed over to new teacher in July who has taken it on with gusto!

Bullyard State School, QLD Project name: Bullyard Community Market Garden This project aims to further build student engagement with the garden program, by allowing them to develop the resources and materials needed for an ongoing fundraising venture that they will benefit both financial literacy from, but also better health outcomes.

Financial literacy will be built through such activities including:

• Purchasing of seeds/equipment/pots/bulk soils etc. • Costing, selling and calculating profits on plants sold at markets. • Providing fresh produce for school community, including keeping records of ‘savings’ from growing plants as

opposed to purchasing from supermarkets.

• Delays with Covid-19 meant cancelling outside community involvement. Nonetheless we are setting up our irrigation system and greenhouse, planting garden beds and purchasing equipment for the greenhouse.

• We are anticipating a bumper crop towards the end of term 3, all things going well.

Cabbage Tree Island Public School, NSW Project name: Community Café and Swap Shop The school staff and students discussed the value in setting a community café and swap shop with a space for community members to gather once a fortnight. The café would provide community members with tea and coffee and snacks and a swap and buy service to allow community members to share items no longer needed for other community members to benefit from.

The school in cooperation with the community, would set up larger community gardens to have a ‘Bush tucker’ garden planted and work closely with horticulturalist and local Indigenous Knowledge keepers to use plants for medicinal and food purposes.

The project is a wellbeing and financial project and would be environmentally friendly. Students would be more familiar with local and traditional flora and would be responsible for maintaining the plants in partnership with family groups. It will also focus ways to support our community through waste reduction and bring everyone together for a positive experience.

Capella State School, QLD Project name: Trash for Cash The ‘Trash for Cash’ Project, is about connecting with school and community to create a viable financial industry using the waste that is produced. This project would not only enhance the school grounds but also be used as a teaching and learning resource for the school.

Update: Below are some photos showing how the project was progressing through June/July.

Koolunga Primary School, SA Project name: Financial Literacy through Enterprise Koolunga Primary School is a small rural school without a canteen or local store. Financial Literacy through Enterprise is a cooking initiative. This project will target and address the need for a financial enterprise, to build site and curriculum capacity and embed financial language, knowledge and understanding across the whole school community through a kitchen enterprise.

Update:

• Students have begun cooking weekly meals and using data to model and represent our enterprise. This includes key skills and competencies such as reading and interpreting data, all operations including excel graphing, sustaining and calculating a live budget that demonstrates costs, income, expenditure and profit. This will be all recorded using a collective Visual Diary and will be owned and managed by the Year 5/6 cohort.

Liwara Catholic Primary School, WA Project name: Being Smart with Money This project titled ‘Being Smart with Money’ will support students to be just that – smart with money! The focus is on a whole school project-based instructional approach designed to give students the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills through engaging ‘Moneysmart’ projects. These projects will be set around challenges and problems they may face in the real world.

Update: Sheila Griffin presented professional development to Liwara staff in late April.

Medowie Christian School, NSW Project name: ‘Drop the Beet’- Food boxes for busy families Students will learn about responsible financial management and the benefits of sustainable, healthy food production. Our project will utilise students in Stage 3 (Years 5 & 6) to create fresh food meal boxes for sale within the Medowie community. Adopting the idea from similar meal preparation boxes in the market today, the boxes, ingredients, recipes and artworks would be created by students.

Students would be responsible for managing all financial aspects of the project. Students will create fresh recipes from our existing and new agricultural plots, as well as working with other local food suppliers in our community to provide easy-to-prepare, nutritious meals for busy families. Some boxes will also be used to bless members of the community who are facing hardship.

Update:

• Regardless of Covid-19, we managed to plant some seeds early on. Some activities could be done online, such as the logo design and branding which was a really great exercise.

• Students designed and sent a survey to families and the wider community to gather information on lifestyle, family sizes etc. We received 100 responses and students are now completing a data investigation so inform how they can design their meal box accordingly.

Pindi Pindi State School, QLD Project name: Aquaponics The project aims to sustain the fabric of this farming community by learning through hands-on interaction with the environment. The students and staff will develop an aquaponics system so they, and the community, can see sustainable farming practices are available.

Students will be involved in the process of developing a design plan through research, budgeting and the installation and maintenance of the system. As the aquaponics system is set up and begins to produce large quantities of produce, students will develop and advertise to sell the items to the local community.

Update:

• Project was featured in the local Daily Mercury newspaper in Mackay on 23 June (unable to replicate due to copyright restrictions).

• As well as the project being about money, maths has been boosted by this project with students measuring spaces, determining the square metres needed, squaring up the garden beds and working out dimensions … it’s been amazing! The money side of things will really kick in when we start selling and reinvesting in the project.

Scarborough Public School, NSW Project name: Small School Startups Based around the framework of project-based learning, students will research, establish and financially operate small businesses with the goal of selling products at a school trade fair in Term 2. Student start-ups will work with local businesses and the University of Wollongong Innovation Campus to learn about the importance of risk taking in establishing a viable business, while using appropriate risk-management strategies such as effective cash flow management, fundraising and financial management to ensure their businesses remain viable and competitive.

Update:

• One of our students was so motivated he went to surf shops in our area to promote his surf wax product and has had success.

• Staff are motivated and the students love it.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, NSW Project name: Market Gardening at Joey’s The goal of the project is for students to focus on budgeting and planning a successful business with the intention of profits being used to sustain the project long term, with a percentage of the profits and/or produce being donated to our ‘Breakfast Club’ which provides breakfast for students in our school community. This project is a guided inquiry program working across many curriculum areas, implementing Money Smart resources to support the project.

Update:

• We plan to combine the Moneysmart grant with Well-being and Aboriginal Education funding to achieve the following exciting learning opportunities for our students:

o Australian Bush Tucker garden beds o Chook Pen o Well-being sensory outdoor space o Market Day

• We have invited permaculturalist Dan Bakker, to visit and create an educationally engaging garden day for our whole school. Students will be involved in creating their own take-home Basil Bags and setting up our Australian Bush Tucker wicking garden.

Westminster Primary School, WA Project name: Moneysmart Expo This project would involve parents by hosting a Moneysmart Expo, where all year levels will engage in financial literacy activities linked to real life. This will give students the opportunity to present to their parents in their home language and also to our wider school community, including the Junior School and Education Support Centre in the presentations.

It would also involve teaching the students to teach their parents. Having the students work with their parents allows them to work in their home languages.

Update:

• Due to COVID disruption the project was postponed until term three • Teacher relief day – address any queries or concerns from staff in 1-1 meetings to discuss program and

expectations for their class participation in school wide program. • Staff implement Moneysmart program in class on a weekly basis.
