Many homeownersdream of giving theirkitchens a full-scale
remodel. Though such a project cangive a kitchen an entirely new look,that look does not come cheap.
According to Remodeling maga-zine’s 2013 “Cost vs. Value Report,”homeowners can expect to spendmore than $53,000 on a majorkitchen remodel and recoup justbelow 70 percent of that cost atresale.
So while the idea of a full-scalekitchen remodel might be a dreamproject, the cost of such an under-taking is beyond many homeowners’budgets.
But homeowners who cannotafford a full remodel can still givetheir kitchens a new look and can doso for relatively little money.Painting kitchen cabinets a newcolor or simply giving fading cabi-nets a fresh coat of paint can instant-ly add life to a kitchen, giving theroom an entirely different feel with-out breaking the bank. The follow-ing are a few tips for homeowners
planning to paint their kitchen cabi-nets.
* Assess your existing cabinets.Some cabinet materials, includingwood and metal, can be repaintedwithout much of a fuss. But othermaterials, including plastic laminate,are not so amenable to repainting,and will likely require specialtypaints. Homeowners with plasticlaminate cabinets should first paint aspot or two with a sample paint,being careful to choose a spot that’sconcealed.
If the paint bonds well to theplastic laminate, then you can goforward and buy enough paint toredo all of the cabinets. If the paintdoes not take, consult a professionalto find a paint that’s likely to be abetter fit. Expect this process to beone of trial and error.
* Plan for ornate cabinets to takea little longer. Painting projects willgo faster when cabinets have flatfronts, but they can take consider-ably longer when cabinets are uniqueand more detailed. If your cabinetsare ornate, then factor this extra time
into your schedule.* Remove the doors and hard-
ware. When painting cabinets, it’sbest to essentially disassemble them,removing the doors, handles, knobs,latches, and any additional hardware.When removing hardware, be sure toset them aside in clearly markedplastic bags so it’s easier to reassem-ble the cabinets once the fresh coatof paint has dried.
As doors are removed, numbereach door and its correspondinglocation, much like products thatrequire assembly are numbered at thefactory. This makes it easier toreassemble and ensures the cabinetsand their hinges will align properlyonce you have finished painting.
* Don’t paint dirty surfaces.Cabinet surfaces have likely collectedtheir share of dirt, grease and grimeover the years, so you want to cleanthese surfaces thoroughly beforepainting. Once surfaces have beencleaned, rinse them off and givethem ample time to dry.
* Sand the surfaces. Once the sur-faces have been cleaned and are com-pletely dry, it’s time to start sandingthem. Lightly sand the doors using awood sanding block, working to cre-ate a firm base to which fresh paintcan easily adhere. Areas that are mostexposed to wear and tear may requiresome extra elbow grease, and someareas may be especially flaky. Whenold paint is flaking off, this meansthe previous finish did not adherevery well to the surface, which is notnecessarily uncommon in kitchens,
where moisture and grease residuecan make it harder for paint toadhere to the surface. In suchinstances, sand the flaky areas to thebare wood before spot-priming witha primer or sealer designed for areaswith heavy staining. After all of thesanding is complete, vacuum the sur-faces to ensure there is no leftoversanding dust before painting.
* Apply primer-sealer. Primer-sealer ensures the fresh paint willbond well to the surfaces, preventingconditions like flaking in the future.
* Paint the cabinets. After theprimer-sealer has been applied, it’stime to paint the cabinets. Beginwith the inside edges and openingsof the face frames, followed by theouter cabinet sides and then thefront of the frames. Then move onto the cabinet doors and any drawerfronts you might be painting as well.Cabinets with more elaborate designsrequire closer attention to detail thanflat cabinets. When painting, opt forthin coats, which dry more quicklyand also create fewer visible brush-strokes. When applying multiplecoats, allow the paint ample time todry between coats. Four hoursbetween coats is a good rule ofthumb, and lightly resand all surfacesbefore applying the second and finalcoat of paint.
* Reassemble the cabinets. Oncethe final coat of paint has fully dried,carefully reassemble your cabinetsand then enjoy the fresh and inex-pensive new look that your freshlypainted cabinets have created.

Add some fresh color to kitchen cabinets
Freshly painted cabinets can give a kitchen an entirely new and freshlook at a fraction of the cost of a full-scale kitchen remodel.
Bringing a new baby homefrom the hospital is agreat moment for parents.
But as a child settles into his or her new home, parents look around thathome and see less "home" and more "hazard." Kids are going to get somebumps and bruises along the way, but it's still important that parentschildproof their homes to keep such instances to a minimum and ensurethat trips and falls don't lead to something far worse than just somescrapes and tears.
Childproofing a home is typically more difficult for first-time parentswho don't have the trained eye for hazard spots that parents of one ormore children feel is second nature. But a practical approach to child-proofing a home can keep kids safe and let parents rest easy knowingtheir youngsters are safe. The following are just a handful of the manyways parents can make their homes safer for newborns and young chil-dren.
* Turn down the water heater. Young children are susceptible to burnsfrom hot water, even if that water temperature is perfectly fine for the restof the family. Mayo Clinic recommends setting the temperature on thehot water heater to below 120 F and installing antiscald devices on bath-tubs and showerheads. In addition, always test the water before yourchild gets into the tub.
* Store potentially dangerous household items high up. Childprooflocks on cupboards and drawers can be an effective deterrent to curiousbabies, but parents should never underestimate just how inquisitive someyoungsters can be. To safeguard especially curious kids from their ownbehaviors, always store potentially harmful household items in high cabi-nets that little boys and girls won't be able to reach. Knives, householdcleaners and scissors are just a few items that should be stored wellbeyond kids' reach until they have clearly demonstrated they can handlesuch objects without cause for concern.
* Remove magnets from the refrigerator. Small magnets on a refrigera-tor often fall off when doors are open or closed. Babies or toddlers caneasily find such magnets, which then become a choking hazard. Kidsshould not be in the kitchen anyway, but curious kids have a way of find-ing their way into rooms parents try to make off-limits, so it's better tobe safe than sorry.
* Secure flat-screen televisions. The televisions of yesteryear were soheavy that many adults couldn't even move them without help. Not sofor today's flat-screen televisions, which are not only lightweight but also
easily tipped over thanks to their often top-heavy structure. Such televi-sions should be mounted to the wall or kept high off the ground wherekids can't reach them. Televisions that aren't wall-mounted or those thatare close to the ground are far more likely to tip over when curious kidsgo exploring.
* Keep cribs away from the window. Cribs should never be kept near awindow, where cords hanging from blinds present a choking hazard. Inaddition, cribs located too close to a window can expose babies to the ele-ments, potentially upsetting their rest and making them susceptible tosunburn.

Trees serve many purposes for a landscape,providing shade and habitats for birds andother animals and serving as natural blindsbetween two homes. Trees are often beautifulelements of a natural landscape, adding aes-thetic appeal to a property or even an entirecommunity. But there are times when a treemust be removed, an action that, in manyinstances, requires the services of a profession-al tree service.
A tree with roots invading the foundation of a home orinfringing on a patio or walkway can become a safety hazard.Other trees may cast shade where a pool is planned or causedisagreements between neighbors when the tree straddles aproperty line. These are instances when tree removal will benecessary, and a reputable service can advise as to the bestmethods for ridding the property of the troublesome tree.
Homeowners will need to do a bit of planning and researchto remove trees safely and securely. It is best to contact a varietyof different tree removal services and compare their offeringsand prices. The cost of a tree removal will vary depending onvarious factors, including the height of the tree, its width, thenumber of branches it has, its location on a property and theproximity of that location to potential hazards like power lines.Tree removal may range from a few hundred dollars to severalthousand.
When a tree is being removed, most of the branches will beremoved to make the tree more manageable. Trees are rarelychopped at the base and allowed to fall, as there simply isn'tenough room to safely take this approach. Sections of the treewill be cut, roped off and slowly lowered. A climber will scalethe tree or use a cherry picker machine to reach the top of thetree to facilitate the process.
The pieces of the tree will be loaded into a wood-chipper forgrinding before they are hauled away. Larger, heavier portionsof the stumps may need to be moved later on with machinery.Hauling trees off the property may cost extra, so it is importantthat homeowners read their contract thoroughly before signingon the dotted line.
Additional costs may be factored into the bill. These caninclude stump-and-root grinding. Trees will be cut down to thestump. To prevent eyesores or tripping hazards, some home-owners opt to have the stumps ground down into sawdust. Thiswill not remove all of the roots but will take care of most of theabove-ground portion of the remaining stump. It is usually upto the homeowner to discard the sawdust or use it as amulching material.
Expect the ground around the former tree to be soft, andthere may be a depression depending on how much stumpgrinding took place. Some people prefer to wait a season for theground to recover before planting something new. It may take awhile for grass to sprout where a tree was once located, andthere may be bare spots when grass starts to grow in.
Tree removal can be an expensive venture but is necessary fordifferent reasons. Be sure that tree-removal services are fullyinsured before signing a contract.
