Just Being Here Is Amazing

Showcase Canterbury 6

Christchurch has continued to grow with the business of regeneration and neo think tanks. For investors, corporate travellers and tourists the motels and hotels are back in full swing.

As a tourist destination Canterbury harbours a wealth of activities for visitors; ranging from fi ne dining to high end boutique shopping, adventure tourism, sports and leisure parks and gardens, championship golf courses, motorsport racing, bike tracks, beaches and coastal walkways.

Once you pass through the Southern Gateway your options for adventure are endless. Akaroa is a spectacular drive east to the Banks Peninsula. Heading north-west will take you through to Waimakariri, Amberley and Hanmer Springs.

South-west takes you across the plains to Geraldine, into the McKenzie Country and Lake Tekapo. Direct south leads you through Ashburton and Timaru - the City by the Sea, or further south visit Waimate and discover the true magic of the Canterbury region

Christchurch - The Southern GateThe Southern Gate is a portal through which all travellers must pass.

The city of Christchurch is situated on the eastern edge of the fertile Canterbury Plains, stretching towards the towering majesty of the Southern Alps and sitting

between the stirring expanse of the Pacifi c Ocean.

DOES MY BUM LOOK BIG

IN THESE?

Sally MacDonald, owner of Sally Mac’s women’s

wear store in Amberley, often says she sells not only

women’s clothing, but also fashion!

For many women, the well-known store on the main

road in Amberley is a welcome blend of practical

‘fashion that works’, with down-to-earth, honest

advice from Sally and her staff, and a riot of colour.

While Sally Mac’s has always stocked colour, current

trends are awash with it – plains, prints, stripes,

textures. So, whether it’s sharp citrus, cool blue, or hot

pink you love, Sally Mac’s, in the heart of Amberley, is

the store for you.

In winter, a superb selection of New Zealand-made

merino, in various weights suitable for our variable

weather, and for the warmer months, plenty of

comfortable options for the heat!

This well-stocked store carries far more choice than

you might expect – a comprehensive range of smart,

casual and classic fashion, for any and every occasion.

The team at Sally Mac’s are passionate about jeans

that fi t real women. “Jeans that fi t are a ‘must-have’

in your wardrobe all year round,” says Sally. The great

new jeans from Toorallie Australia have the bonus

of 17% merino wool added to the stretch cotton,

making them fantastic for warmth and comfort in

winter, without being too hot in summer.

As well as the merino-denim Toorallie jeans, Sally

Mac’s also stock Tre Bliss, NYDJ, Alibi, and Staggers,

sizes 8 to 20, in a variety of colours and styles. “We are

happy to spend time with you, making sure that your

bum looks great in your jeans!” says Sally.

Sally Mac’s – open 5½ days, selling the kind of clothes

most women wear, most of the time.

By the 1920s Caroline Bay had a wide reputation as an attractive summer holiday destination. The expanding beach area and facilities attracted growing numbers of tourists.

By the late 1930s, other facilities such as tearooms, a hall, saltwater baths and a modern sound shell were in place. Summer carnivals were held and got into full swing in the 1950s as an annual event running over a number of days.

Throughout the Twentieth Century the sea’s action continued to deposit sand on the beach. By the 1990s, about a century after the beach began to form, the sea was several hundred metres east of it’s original level.

The sea’s gift continues to grow. A large area of land has been reclaimed and turned into a range of recreational areas.

The grand Edwardian homestead was built in 1908 by a Scottish couple, Helen and Alexander Grant, who generously donated it to the people of Timaru in 1956 for use as a public art gallery. Since then, modern extensions have been added to accommodate large scale exhibitions and an ever-expanding permanent collection.

Artworks from the permanent collection are on continually revolving display, with highlights including works by national favourites Charles Goldie, Frances Hodgkins, and Colin McCahon. The engaging temporary exhibition programme highlights the work of contemporary local artists while also featuring major touring shows of artwork from around New Zealand and overseas.

The Grants named the original building Aigantighe, which is Scottish Gaelic for ‘at home’ and is pronounced ‘egg-an-tie’. The gallery is set amongst picturesque grounds featuring a diverse range of sculptures, along with benches and a picnic table to rest and enjoy the view. These grounds are always open to the public.

The gallery is open: Tuesday to Friday, 10am – 4pm, Weekends, 12 – 4pm and closed on Mondays. Entry to all exhibitions is free.
