Introduction
The first grade math curriculum requires that
students learn the value of money, develop the ability
to distinguish different values of money and make
decisions based on mathematical principles.
It is essential that pre-service teachers gain
practical experience in the art and science of applying
knowledge as they develop meaningful learning
experiences for children.
Project Overview
• NWACC Math Structures II students will apply college
course content as they provide a variety of learning
experiences for K-4 students.
• In this project, first grade students are introduced to coin
values through the use of computer integrated activities.
• At the end of instruction, the students will be able to
– use coins to buy snacks in a store
– identify the value of each coin
– determine how they can use coins in everyday life.
Math Structures II
Learning Outcomes
• The project will allow Math Structures II
students to become familiar with lesson
planning and how the curriculum for coin
values are taught in 1st grade.
• Also it allowed us to use our creativity and
demonstrate the use of coins in everyday
life.
Arkansas State Math Frameworks
• M.12.1.4
– Recognize and identify attributes of penny,
nickel, dime, quarter and dollar bill
• M.12.1.5
– State the values of a penny, nickel, dime, and
quarter and dollar bill
• M.12.1.6
– Compare the value of coins (pennies, nickels,
dimes and quarters)
Why is Money Important??
• Money allows us to pay for things we want.
If we want to use money we must know
how to use and count money.
• Learning how to use money also teaches us
to count by 1’s, 5’s, 10’s, and 25’s.
• Working with money also teaches us to add
and subtract.
Methodology
• Researched each coin
• Created a lesson plan to expand the student’s
knowledge of coins
– Each member provided items for the goodie bags and
the store.
– Angelique did the PowerPoint and started the bags.
– Rachel finished the bags.
– Casie provided items for the store and bags.
– Carmela made the awards and provide items for the
store and bags.
Counting Coins with 1st Graders
• After the lesson, we set up a store where students
purchased snacks.
• Each student was given an assortment of coins and was
told to purchase three items.
• They chose from water, chips, and other various snacks.
• Each item cost a different amount.
• Each student had to determine which three items they
could afford with the money given.

Counting Coins with 1st Graders
• After the lesson (before the snacks are
eaten) the group members presented each
student with a goodie bag and an award for
the completion of their activity.
What did they get from the
experience?

Service To The Community
• We were able to show the community how
coins are used in everyday life.
Project Results• As future teachers, we gained experience in
making a lesson plan based on Arkansas
Educational Frameworks and in teaching math
concepts to first grade students.
• Students at Apple Glen Elementary School were
given a “real world” learning
experience where they applied
math concepts in a meaningful,
real world experience.
Community Contact
• We met with Ms. Johnson at Apple Glen
Elementary School in Bentonville, AR.
• She explained that coins and money is an
area that the students find difficult.
• Our goal was to create a fun lesson that
would engage the students.
Skills Developed
• Teamwork
• Communication
• Collaboration of ideas
• Responsibility
• Organization
• We were able to work as a group and share ideas
and thoughts to combine them for this project.
• Communication was a key factor in making this
project successful.
Technology
• Microsoft PowerPoint
• Microsoft Word
• Cell Phones
• StarBoard
• Text Message
Products of Learning Experience
• A K-4 Math Lesson Plan and Activity based on
Arkansas State Frameworks that integrated the use
of math computer software, “Attainnent’s dollars
and cents.”
• Final Project Power Point detailing the experience.
• EAST Lab Webpage publishing the products
