It is estimated that there are around 400,000 Veterans living in Scotland. One in five of the Scottish population is a member of the veterans’ community, with 8% of veterans in Scotland more likely to have a mental health problem than elsewhere in Great Britain. So how can Shoulder to

Shoulder Erskine help?Shoulder to Shoulder Erskine is a TimeBank mentoring project based in Glasgow, matching volunteer mentors with ex-Service men and women who are recovering from mental health problems. The project also helps support their family members and so strengthens the family unit as a whole.

About TimeBankTimeBank has spent the last 14 years delivering volunteering that works and we know how powerful mentoring can be to create positive change in individuals. What looks, at first glance, like a chat over coffee, can turn out to be an extremely effective way to tackle serious social issues.

Working in Partnership with ErskineErskine has been caring for veterans since 1916, re-building shattered lives, restoring dignity and providing first-class care to ex-Service men and women within five care homes across Scotland.

Anxiety, depression and post‑traumatic stress disorder are real conditions which affect many ex-Service men and women in profound ways. TimeBank’s Shoulder to Shoulder Erskine project seeks to apply TimeBank’s mentoring experience to complement the support provided by agencies working with veterans and their families.

Shoulder to Shoulder Erskine is funded by Forces in Mind Trust which promotes the successful transition of Armed Forces personnel and their families into civilian life.

Mentors support their mentees, helping them to adjust to life after receiving treatment

How does Shoulder to Shoulder work?

Mentors and mentees meet once or twice a month over a period of six months to a year

Mentors are there to guide, motivate, encourage and inspire their mentees to achieve realistic goals – not to provide clinical treatment

Mentors will go through an induction, join the PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Adults) scheme and be trained before being matched

Mentees are referred by veterans’ support organisations or they can get in touch with the project directly

We can also offer mentoring by telephone or text
