Q1. Read the following passage carefully: (10 marks)

1. India sells the largest number of branded drugs in the world, almost

60,000 in all. By volume India is ranked 4th and comprises 8 percent of

the global pharma market. This scenario becomes scary given that

spurious and substandard drugs are a thriving parallel industry in our

country. “When manufacturers sell chalk as life – saving drugs, such

criminals should be given the death sentence,” says Dr. P.K. Dave,

President of National Academy of Medical Sciences, Delhi and

former Director of AIIMS.

2. Self-medication with genuine drugs also has disastrous fallouts. “I‟ve

lost count of how many patients come to us, when water crosses head

level,” says Dr. Dave. While Dr. Simran Nundy, consultant gastro-

intestinal surgeon at Delhi‟s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, observes :

”Patients come to me, after six months of taking antacids, to find

they‟re not suffering from indigestion but cancer of the stomach or

gastric tract.” Most medical experts say pill name - dropping is

common. But besides superficial awareness patients know little about

dosage, duration and more importantly, side-effects. In Calcutta, Dr.

Krishnangshu Ray, head of Pharmacology at NRS Medical College and

Hospital, agrees:” “There‟s a drug culture in our state, where people

assume they know which drug to take. This is a dangerous habit,

which accounts for at least 15 to 20 percent of complicated cases.”

3. Besides, no drug, not even an over the counter (OTC) medicine is

totally safe. Aspirin on an empty stomach may lead to severe

gastritis. Even paracetamol, considered the safest painkiller, when

taken in high doses or for prolonged periods, can cause liver

damage. Then there‟s carelessness. Dr. Gupta observes: “ People take

cough suppressant for a cough with sputum, which in fact requires an

expectorant. Or, they consume antibiotics without a doctor‟s

prescription for viral fever, allergic cold, dry cough, flu or sore

throat, which do not require any antibiotic.” Self - medication of

antibacterial drugs can be dangerous. Frequent treatment with

ciprofloxacin for undiagnosed diarrhoea is one of the most common

reasons for emergence of typhoid germs that are resistant to this drug.

4. What makes us such willing pill-swallowers ? Dr. Wishvas Rane,

Pune - based health activist, asserts : “ Most viral conditions are self-

limiting, 80 percent get cured on their own, this pill-popping attitude

is nurtured by pharmaceutical firms.” This is particularly true in our

unique pharma-sales culture where pills are available without bills

and bills can be obtained without buying pills. Dr. Ashish Sabherwal,

Joint Secretary, Indian Medical Association in Delhi, points out:

“Patients just want momentary relief and aren‟t willing to get to the

root of the problem, so pills are eaten like peanuts.”

5. Another reason for spiralling self-treatment is that general

practitioners or GPs, doctors who have shone the torch down our

throats from our toothless babyhood to our ailing adulthood, are

gradually vanishing.

6. In real life, we patients do not have a family friend and a

philosopher - our GP who knew us by blood group, allergies,

medical history and emotional upheavals. Hesitant about dashing

off to intimidating ENT specialist when we have throat trouble, we

just check with the chemist. That could be a dose for disaster.

1. Based on the reading of the passage answer the questions given

below. Write the answers in your answer sheet. Remember to

number the answers correctly :

(a) Why do people indulge in self-medication ?

(b) Why can self - medication have dangerous results ?

2. Fill in the given blanks with appropriate words from the passage :

Q2. Read the following passage carefully: (5 marks) Hibernation

Hibernation is one of the main adaptations that allow certain northern

animals to survive long, cold winters. Hibernation is like a very deep sleep

that allows animals to save their energy when there is little or no food

available. The body functions of „true hibernators‟ go through several

changes while they are hibernating. Body temperature drops, and the heart

rate slows down. For example, a hibernating woodchuck‟s body temperature

drops by more than 30 degrees Celsius, and its heart rate slows from 80 to 4

beats per minute! Other true hibernators include the jumping mouse, little

brown bat, eastern chipmunk, and several ground squirrels. Other animals,

such as the skunk and raccoon, are not considered true hibernators, as they

wake up in the winter to feed, and their body functions do not change as

much. Since they only sleep for a little bit at a time, the term dormancy or

„light sleeping‟ is used to describe their behavior. The largest animals to

hibernate are bears. Their heart rate may slow down from a usual 40-50 beats

per minute to 8-12 beats per minute, but their body temperature changes very

little, so they are able to wake up quickly.

Hibernating animals have a special substance in the blood called hibernation

inducement trigger, or HIT. This substance becomes active in the fall, when

the days become cooler and shorter. When HIT becomes active, the animals

start preparing for winter. Some animals store food so that they can eat when

they wake up, and some animals eat a lot in late summer and fall to add

excess fat to their bodies. This fat keeps them warmer and acts as a source of

energy while they are sleeping. Some animals also make changes to the

places where they will sleep(dens). They add leaves and grasses to keep

themselves warm.

(a) Animals hibernate to __________ .

(i) save energy

(ii) survive harsh winters

(iii) store food

(iv) sleep undisturbed

(b) The skunk and raccoon are not true hibernators as __________ .

(i) they get hungry during sleep

(i) heart rate slows down to 8 - 12 beats

(ii) heart rate slows down to 40 - 50 beats

(d) Animals eat a lot before hibernating because they __________ .

Q3. Read the following poem carefully: (5 marks) The tigress Razia lives alone.

Her two cubs haven‟t been named.

Sheru barely played with them

And now he‟s gone, O what a shame!

Sheru was an expert on winds,

Knew how they traversed dale and hill.

And where they put up for the night

When no leaf stirred and all was still.

He knew their winds, their traffic lanes!

He knew the deer would smell him out,

If they were down – wind.

So he would belly – crawl and crouch

And take a long circular route,

Hiding behind bush and shrub.

Once he knew his scent won‟t carry,

In a flash he would erupt.

(Deer hadn‟t sniffed that thick and musty

Smell of his which people dubbed

As tiger – scent.) He got the stag,

His claw fell like a giant club

On neck and antler – both were crushed.

Now Sheru‟s gone. Not any more

Do people fear his dreaded spoor, (smell)

Pug – marked on the forest floor.

Grief and fear start competing

In Razia‟s heart. With Sheru gone,

Will the hyenas hound her cubs ?

Can she leave the little ones alone,

When she goes hunting flesh and bone ?

The tigress Razia lives in fear.

A greater dread, when will again

The poachers with their guns appear ?

Answer the following questions by choosing appropriate options from those

given below :

(a) Sheru has gone

(b) her cubs haven‟t been named
