Our Canterbury campusis set in beautifulparkland overlooking theworld-famous CanterburyCathedral, part of a worldheritage site.

Canterbury has a rich social life,as you’d expect from a city withnearly 30,000 students. Accordingto travel company Experian,Canterbury is the UK’s third

On our self-containedCanterbury campusyou have access to all ofthe University’s resources,with everything you needto enjoy student life andhelp you in your studies.

Campus life is ideal for studentsfrom overseas as it provides aself contained environment witheverything in one place. The resultis a lively and memorable livingexperience. You have access to allthe University resources and areonly ever a few minutes away fromyour classes. In your spare time,you can enjoy the campus cinema,theatre and a range of bars andrestaurants. The campus has twobanks, a sports centre, shops andan award-winning student nightclub.The city centre is only a 25-minutewalk away and there’s a frequentbus service between campus andthe city centre. AccommodationStudents have the option of living incampus accommodation, which isno more than a few minutes’ walkfrom all the central facilities. Thisallows you to live in a studentapartment, house or college, so youhave the opportunity to make newfriends from around the world.

All students, no matter where theylive, belong to one of Kent’scolleges. Each has its own living,social, teaching and study facilities

and is made up of studentsfrom different disciplines andnationalities. College Mastersare part of a network of people,including course advisers, who havea responsibility for student welfare.

Kent Union Advice CentreKent’s Student Union has trainedmembers of staff who can offerspecialist advice on a rangeof matters including visas,immigration, safety and welfare.

Health care and personalsupport servicesKent has a medical centre,a nursing service and a pharmacy.Other facilities include a CounsellingService, Disability and DyslexiaService, the Student Support andWellbeing Service and a daynursery for children. The ChaplaincyTeam serves all the main Christiandenominations and the Buddhist,Muslim and Jewish communities oncampus. We offer short-term programmeswhich allow international studentsto spend a term or year at Kent.Our programmes suit youracademic ability, your level ofproficiency in English and theamount of time you would liketo spend abroad. Our programmesare as follows:

JUNIOR YEAR ABROAD (JYA)ENGLISH PLUS

JYA English PLUS hasbeen designed to meetthe needs of studentswhose first languageis not English. It offersa combination of languagetraining, study skills andthe opportunity to studyacademic modules fromacross the University.

The programme consists of:

1 British and Academic CultureAn optional two-week course to helpyou become accustomed to yournew study and learningenvironment.

2 Pre-sessional studiesThis focuses on developing yourEnglish language and study skillsso that you can meet the levelof proficiency required to makethe most of your academic studies.You learn how to navigate the UKuniversity and assessment system,while improving your Englishlanguage skills. You have theopportunity to join our summersocial programme, run by ourstudent ambassadors. This

includes trips to local places ofinterest, weekly social evenings,karaoke and much more. You canalso join Kent Sport and haveaccess to all of the University’ssporting facilities. At the end ofthis course, you are assessed onyour language skills. This helpsto determine which modules youshould follow in the academic term.

3 Kent academic term(s)You study a series of academicmodules offered by academicschools across the University. TheJYA English PLUS programme isoffered as a full-year (from May toApril) or part-year (eight monthsfrom May to December).

At Kent, we offer a wide range ofacademic modules, which makesit easy to find something to fit yourinterests and level of knowledge.

You are given advice on choosingyour academic modules onceyou have taken your languageassessment in September. However,if you would like to browse throughsome of the Stage 1 moduleson offer, please refer to our onlinecatalogue at www.kent.ac.uk/courses/modules

Kent has exchangeagreements with manyuniversities around theworld and can makesimilar arrangementswith other reputableuniversities.

If you come to Kent under anexchange agreement, you are an‘exchange student’ and pay tuitionfees to your home university. In orderto gain credits for your year abroad,your university needs to approvethe details of your year at Kent,including the modules you havechosen.

It is your responsibility to liaisewith your home institution aboutthe transfer of the academic creditsyou gain at Kent. Please contactyour university’s study abroad officefor details.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND FEES

General academicrequirementsFor entry on to a short-termprogramme we normally requirea grade point average (GPA)of 3.0 or above (out of 4.0) orits equivalent. However eachapplication is considered onan individual basis.

If your home universityhas an exchangeagreement with theUniversity of Kent, pleaseliaise directly with itsstudy abroad officewhen you apply.

If your university does not currentlyhave an agreement with Kent, weconsider direct applications forshort-term study. Please bear inmind it is your responsibility to liaisewith your home institution abouttransferring credits for your studyat Kent.

As part of your application you needto include:1 A copy of your passportThis is mandatory; you will notbe able to submit your applicationwithout this.

2 A provisional moduleregistration form (not requiredfor JYA English PLUS applicants)You can download this form fromour website at: www.kent.ac.uk/courses/short-term/apply• Please ensure that you havechosen modules accordingto the specification of yourparticular programme(see www.kent.ac.uk/courses/modules).

• On your provisional module form,fill in your preferred modules,and some alternative modules(in case your first choices arenot available).

• If you wish to transfer academiccredits, please check that yourchosen modules will be acceptedby your home university.

3 Proof of academicachievementsYou need to include full, certifiedtranscripts of your academicachievements in English and resultsto date from your home institution.

4 Academic referenceYou need to include a report froma teacher who is familiar with youracademic work at your presentuniversity or college.

Visa and immigrationThe need to obtain entry permissionbefore arriving in the UK isdetermined by your nationality.Please ensure that you allowenough time to make your visaapplication. For more details, seewww.gov.uk/tier-4-general-visa

If you plan to study in the UK forless than six months and do notintend to work then, dependingon your nationality, you can enterthe UK on a short-term studyvisa. However, please note thatyou cannot switch from a short-termstudy visa to a Tier 4 Visa while inthe UK.
