What is a Short Story?A short story is a brief work of fiction. They

do not have a fixed length, but most of them are between five hundred words and fifty pages. Short stories are brief enough to be read in one sitting.

There are many elements of a short story such as plot, conflict, resolution, external conflict, internal conflict, exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, setting theme, point of view, and narrator.

In order to have a short story you must have all of these elements. The most important elements of a short story are the narrator, conflict, call to action, characters, theme, and point of view.

What are the characteristics of fiction writing?• The characteristics of fiction writing are tone,

mood, atmosphere, and symbol.• Tone is the writer’s attitude toward the

characters, the reader, or the subject matter.• Mood or atmosphere is the feeling that a

story evokes in the reader.• A symbol is a person, place, or an object that

has its own meaning but also stands for something larger than itself.
