Koo Yew Lie was Professor of language, culture and literacy in multilingual contexts at the School of Language Studies and Linguistics, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. She has been an academic at UKM/the National University of Malaysia for 31 years. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Humanities with Education from University Sains Malaysia (USM), an M.A in Linguistics and English Language Teaching from the University of Leeds, and a Ph D in Education (Applied Linguistics) from the Institute of Education, University of London in 1998. I have taught, researched and published in the area of applied linguistics and literacy in language education, cultural politics and knowledge production, language and literacy education in multilingual/cultural contexts and in the area of higher education with a special interest in Malaysia and ASEAN countries.

Since 2007 I have been an Associate Research Fellow at the Institut Penyelidikan Pengajian Tinggi Negara/ National Higher Education Research Institute (NAHERI/IPPTN), a think-tank to the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MoHE). I am involved in the strategic planning, development and evaluation of Higher Education policies in Malaysia. At the same time I am actively involved in policy and research on the internationalisation in higher education in Malaysia and intercultural contexts.

ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP AND CONTRIBUTION

1. TEACHING AND SUPERVISION

I have received high SMPK UKM scores (Sistem Maklumat Penilaian Kakitangan/Annual Assessment of Academic Performance) ranging fr 90.10 % to 98 % for the years 2004-20131

Excellence in the development of courses and teaching - This stems from academic leadership in designing and implementing new programmes. I have introduced and developed a wide range of Masters level courses ranging from Approaches to Discourse to Language and literacy. I have contributed extensively in the development of the Masters Programme in English Language studies which attracts a large number of international and domestic students and which have received good reviews and feedback.

Excellence in supervision – I have showed strong academic leadership being the supervisor of seven graduated PhD’s and three doctoral theses in progress. Four of my seven doctoral students graduated with distinctions and are employed as academics in Australia, Malaysia and the Middle East. I am currently supervising three Cambodian research students in CDU.

Invitations to teach/lecture and contribute my expertise in culture, language and literacy and in higher education across institutional, national and international contexts. This includes honorary positions in Australia and the United Kingdom. I teach on postgraduate seminars in China, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia. I have received invitations for professorial visits to Taiwan (Oct 2013) and Australia (2014). I have been invited to research and

collaborate globally in countries such as Canada and China. Most recently, I have been appointed as Adjunct Professor to CDU Australia from 2013 to 2016 and associate Professorial Fellow to SOAS, University of London in 2014.

I was involved in nationally funded research projects on The Shaping of Hub of Knowledge and Skills through Internationalization, a review of the National Higher Education Plan of Malaysia and Contemporizing Transdiciplinary Knowledge Transfer under the Conceptualizing Local Knowledge: A Study on Sustainable Values of Local Wisdom and Indigenous Science.

I have successfully completed national and internationally funded projects involving Higher Education policy including the Changing Academic Profession, post-secondary education in Malaysia, the postgraduate research student experience in Malaysian Public Universities and the internationalisation of Higher Education in Malaysia, Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Vietnam.

My involvement with the Malaysia- Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam Higher Education policy since its inception has led to a completed international research study on “A situation analysis: towards developing a human capital framework for research in CLMV (Cambodia, Laos, Mynmar, Vietnam) countries”; “A situation analysis of e-learning readiness in CLMV (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam)”; and a publication on “Overview of Higher Education in Malaysia, Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Vietnam”, co-written with Melissa Ng Lee Yen Abdullah and Morshidi Sirat (2012) in Rozinah Jamaludin, Melissa Ng Lee Yen Abdullah and Sarjit Kaur (Eds), Higher education and human capital development between Malaysia and CLMV: towards strategic partnerships and alliances (Pp 7-38) under the National Higher Education Research Institute, Universiti Sains Malaysia.

More than half of my presentations are invited and sponsored by institutions outside of UKM. I have presented a keynote address at the invite of a University in Taiwan. I have had several plenary addresses and panel addresses in Malaysia, Australia, China and Japan which were funded by national and international institutions including the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Japan, Applied Linguistics Association of Australia (ALLA) and University of Queensland, Chinese University Hong Kong , Kao Yuan University, Taiwan, Charles Darwin University.

5. CONTRIBUTION TO SCHOOL/ FACULTY/ UNIVERSITY/COUNTRY

I have been involved as organiser and secretariat of international conferences including the Vice Chancellors’ Forum 17 Commonwealth Education Ministerial Meeting (17 CCEM) as well as the GHEF (Global Higher Education conference) organised by Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia in 2007, 2009, 2011

I was involved in the Malaysian – Cambodia. Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam Higher Education Higher Ed Policy (Ministry of HE Malaysia) since its inception in 2007 and we are now moving into the third stage of the Policy which is driven by the harmonisation of HE policies in the Asean region

I was appointed to be on the National Advisory Panel of Research Funding for the Department of Higher Education (Planning) Ministry of Higher Education from 2012

I have served on the National Advisory Panel for Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar Vietnam Strategic Planning and Research Board from 2010 .

I have served on the University’s Fundamental Research Grants Advisory Panel which assesses research proposals submitted to the Ministry of Higher Education

I have served in various academic committees for the Faculty. My contributions range from academic expertise in supporting Research and Innovation to Postgraduate Curriculum Development.

I was the coordinator of a range of MA courses on the MA English language studies programme.

I have designed, developed and evaluated a number of MA in English Language studies courses viz. Language and literacy, Teaching of Reading, Approaches to Discourse. Culture, Language and Communication, Language in the Global Context

As a member of the postgraduate committee at the School, I am involved in the design, development and delivery of teaching programs of recognised excellence such as the Bachelors and Masters of English Language Studies. The latter has been well received by inbound international students from South East Asia and the Middle East. My contribution has been to ‘internationalise’ our curricula for an increasingly mobile student population.

I have developed collaborations, networks and linkages including those in China, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Canada which have been used to develop the scholarship of teaching and learning and research at the University

I am a founding member of GHEN a network set up by the National Higher Education Research Institute since 2011

I initiated UKM’s membership in the International Literacy Unit in 2003 a research/conference and interest conglomerate of USM, RMIT, UUM, UMS, James Cook University, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

As Vice Chair of SOLLS 2011, a bi yearly conference on language and literacy at the National University, I have engaged with colleagues and research associates to internationalise the conference
