— Stephanie KeehanSingle Unit Courses
In addition to short courses, RMIT offers single unit courses. These are subjects from degrees that are available for you to study, even if you’re not enrolled as a university student. You take the same classes and complete the same assessment tasks as enrolled RMIT University students.
Stephanie Keehan is an accomplished STEM researcher and professional with a long-standing relationship with RMIT and recently completed the single unit course Medical Imaging Physics. Stephanie returned to RMIT, as many students do, after completing a PhD and Bachelor of Applied Science (Physics) (Honours), to continue specialising in her field.
“Work placement during my studies at RMIT was invaluable to my experience. Having an early involvement in research groups accelerated my development as a physicist and has led to an exciting and rewarding career. Guest lecturers from industry were a highlight in this single course. Assignments covering real-life clinical cases were also very useful.
“I’m now working as a medical physics registrar, which means undertaking further study and training. I hope to continue making use of the research skills I learnt at RMIT once I am a certified medical physicist.”
A single unit course could be ideal for you if you want to:
gain experience as a university student
check if you really like the subject matter before committing to a degree
undertake study to complement your degree
obtain credits or exemptions when applying or reapplying for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree (not applicable to all single unit courses).

— Simon MoroHow to Make a Hit Record and Other Production Secrets
Simon Moro is a music producer and mixer, who started his professional career in 2000. He advanced his talents training with two of the industry’s best: David Kahne and Michael Brauer.
“I studied sound production at RMIT and fell in love with the art of making records. It’s a beautiful balance of creativity and science – the art of song writing, paired with technology and collaboration can be very exciting and rewarding.
“This course helps recording artists understand the differences between production price points, and production processes. Upon completion, attendees will be able to make better decisions about how much to invest in their production, and how some compromises might affect their music’s ability to have success. These days it’s very easy to waste a lot of money on inferior products, because ‘everyone’s a record producer’. This course sets realistic expectations, and helps artists understand what they really need to do, and invest, to break into the industry.
“With sound courses at RMIT, artists will be able to recognise what their strengths are, and how to stay focused and keep the faith in their ability, by understanding what might be a limitation with an external factor such as technology, budget or the experience of their collaborators.”

— Malcolm ThomasFurniture Design
Malcolm Thomas (left) is a furniture maker and is the creative director of creative design firm Eggbox, a design agency specialising in museum, gallery and visitor centre design. Malcom has collaborated with both academics and industry specialists in his own design practice.
“The work I do is an area of design that involves many areas of expertise that intersect and collaborate.
“Introduction to Furniture designing provides an opportunity for participants to develop two-dimensional ideas that they may have for a furniture item. Through the course, using cardboard and other materials, a 3D outcome can be achieved. Participants work through the design process and are exposed to the history of furniture designers and making techniques.
“Some students who do the course are preparing their designs to become part of a folio allowing them to apply for diploma, associate degree and higher education courses.
“After completing the course, students can pursue a career in furniture making and sales, interior design and more.”

— Jacqueline BaxterTextile Design: Botanical Illustration and Pattern Repeats
Jacqueline is a textile designer and botanical artist, always inspired by the natural world and its beautiful colour palette and patterns. She has studied extensively with Jenny Phillips School of Art, through the Royal Botanical Gardens and with Terry Napier.
“The discovery of botanical art began as an extension of my textile working career, as my focus has always been in traditional mediums, my passion for detail and how plants are composed has come to the fore. My artworks range from intricate botanical illustrations to loose, flowing, floral designs.
“My artwork has been seen at the Royal Melbourne Botanical Gardens biennial exhibitions in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016 among other shows and exhibits.
“This is a course you would do as a taster of how to hand paint and create pattern repeat for those who haven’t done anything like this before, or as a top-up of skills in detailed watercolour painting techniques and pattern repeat using their photoshop skills.”
