SHORT BIO AND HEADSHOT
DR. GEORGE YAW OBENG
Dr. George Yaw Obeng is a Senior Research Fellow and Director of the Technology
Consultancy Centre (TCC) of the College of Engineering, Kwame Nkrumah University of
Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana. He is also a Fellow of The Energy
Center (TEC), KNUST, Kumasi. He has been working as a Senior Member of the University
since 1994/5 and is a member of several local and international associations and committees
including steering committee member: Ghana GIS-energy access project; Ghana Jatropha
(GHAJA) Project; College of Engineering Board; Member Kumasi Business Incubator
(KBI); Research Group on Culture Knowledge and Development of the Center for
Development Research (ZEF) University of Bonn, Germany; Planning Meeting on ASADI
VI agenda for the Energy Access, Pretoria; and Advisory Committee on Design and
Urbanisation, New York, USA. For about 9 years he served as the Manager of the
Intermediate Technology Transfer Unit (ITTU) of the TCC, KNUST in Kumasi, Ghana. He
holds a BSc in Agricultural Engineering, MSc in Approriate Technology and Development
with major in Renewable Energy Technologies from Flensburg University, Germany, and
holds a PhD in Development Studies with focus on Energy Access and Poverty studies in
Ghana and Africa. He teaches Production Engineering Techniques in the Mechanical
Engineering Department of KNUST and has been practically involved in the design and
development of food and agro processing machinery and equipment. He has both local and
international experience working with the EU, CIDA, EUEI-PDF, GEF/UNDP,
GEDAP/World Bank, Rockefeller Foundation, MIT, etc. in development focused research.
And combines engineering science and planning tools to undertake R&D in energy access,
quality of life and productive improvements of the poor in Ghana and Africa. Arising out of
his R&D efforts are a number of scholarly journal publications, conference proceedings,
technical papers, working prototypes and working papers.
