transitionaseasyandtransparenttocallersaspossible.”ThenewsystemalsohadtoletSanLuisObispokeepthesamephonenumbersandeasilyinteroperatewiththecity’sExtremenetwork.
SanLuisObispoevaluatedsystemsfromalonglistofbothtraditionalandIPPBXsuppliers,andreducedthelisttoShoreTelandMitel.Thecity’snetworkvendor,Extreme,isaShoreTelpartnerandhadalreadysuccessfullyimplementedanetworkingsolution.“ShoreTel’sinteroperabilitywithExtremewasahugeadvantagebecausewecouldbeconfidentthatbothsolutionsworkedwelltogether,”Mr.Schmidtsaid.“WealsolikedthefactthatShoreTelswitchesaresolidstatewithnomovingpartsotherthenthefan,whichmakesthesystemhighlyreliable,”hecontinued.
Aftertalkingwithseveralcustomerreferencesandattendingademonstration,Mr.SchmidtrecommendedShoreTeltocitymanagement,andthedecisionwasfinalized.“ItwaseasytoseethattheShoreTelUnifiedCommunications(UC)systemwassimpletosupportandhadalowcostofownership,”headded.“Thesystemmetallourrequirementsandthepricewasverycompetitive.ThebottomlinewasthatShoreTelofferedthemostvalueforthemoney.”

ShoreTelalsohelpscityemployeesreachthepeopletheyneed,whentheyneedthem,reducingtheamountoftimewastedintelephonetag.“ConferencecallsareverysimpletosetupontheflyandShoreTel’spresencefeaturealsomakesiteasyandfasttoseeifpeopleareavailable,”Mr.Schmidtsaid.“Withtheoldsystem,receptionistshadtolookata50buttonconsoletodetermineifsomeonebeingcalledwasonthephone.Now,theycaneasilyseeifpeopleareavailable,onthephone,outoftheofficeorinameeting.Notonlycantheydirectcallersappropriately,customerserviceisbetterbecausewecangetanswersfaster.”
