Pastor Carolyn’s
Conundrums:
Every year Dave and I have the same discussion about Valentine’s day. Why does it exist? Was it made up by the card and flower companies to make money? “I don’t need a special day to love you, I love you all year long!” … I suppose those same questions could be asked about Christmas, Easter, and all the other special days of the year. So why do you celebrate? What do all these holidays mean to you? Do some of the holidays mean more to you? I believe all these holidays have a place. Should we need them? No. Do we need them, I think so. We get so busy with our everyday lives that we can lose focus, on God, our families…. It is important to take those days to remember the birth of the savior, the ultimate gift from God. It is important to remember Easter, the ultimate sacrifice and triumph of God. While I may not put Valentine’s day at quite the same level as these afore mentioned holidays, I believe it is an important reminder to acknowledge our love, for our significant others, families and God.

In a world filled with such hate (if we are to believe the news) we need to be intentional about sharing love. Not just the eros (physical) love we have for our spouses, or even the philia (brotherly) love we have for others. But the God given agape (unconditional) love. This is the love that God has called us to live into. This is the love of God shown through us. This is the love that is a light in the darkness. This is the love that kept Jesus on the cross. So this Valentine’s Day, month, year… may we allow God to love through us. This Valentine’s Day, month, year… may you remember that you are loved beyond measure! As we have been loved, may we so love.

The American Sewing Guild Yard Sale The Jacksonville Chapter of the American Sewing Guild will hold their annual yard sale on Saturday, February 9th from 9am-2pm in the Christian Education Building. We have been holding our sale for several years now, and it is highly anticipated throughout the community. Crafters always love a good bargain, and this sale is just the ticket. On sale will be all things related to sewing, knitting and crocheting, as well as other crafts. There will be fabric, notions, and sewing machines. We also have a “Boutique” section where items will be for sale that our members have hand-crafted. These make great gifts. If you happen to have sewing or other crafting items you would like to donate to our sale, you can drop them off at the CEB on Friday between 10am and 5pm. It’s always a good idea to purge your stash every now and then to make room for more!! If you have any questions about the sale, please call Lisa Cavacini at 904-471-5966.
Thank You! Gracias! Merci! The Sunset Circle would like to thank our Shores church family for the generous donations of blankets, quilts, afghans, coats, socks, and winter wear for the street homeless. They delivered EIGHT large loads to First UMC to assist with their mission to people who are street homeless. The bin has been removed from the Caring Corner. If you still have items to donate, please drop them off directly at FUMC on King St. The Sunset Circle ladies do NOT plan any additional deliveries until after Thanksgiving. God bless everyone for helping our brothers and sisters who are homeless.
Volunteers Needed Children's Crafts The Children's Exploring LIFE Program needs volunteers to help with Art & Craft activities the second and third Wednesday of each month. Our enrollment has increased, and we have a lot of young children and need extra hands to help. We need volunteers to assist our teachers in prepping and assisting the children during craft activity centers from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The children are divided into two age groups and rotate between crafts and games. If you enjoy crafts and would like to volunteer for one or both evenings, please call the church office at 797-4416 or contact Peggy Fallin at 315-1880.
