welcomeWe want Shoreditch Town Hall to

be a vibrant home for original and adventurous artists and audiences.

We’re a non-traditional performance space – there is no or very little fixed infrastructure in our spaces – and we aim to make journeys through and around our building with the quality and varied character of our rooms a vital part of the experience. We want to encourage greater exploration and experimentation from artists and creatives, supporting the development of new performance, with our spaces themselves being reinvented or becoming an integral part of the work. And we want to give audiences surprising, transformational and unique experiences, ones they can’t have anywhere else – with work sometimes complete or often in development. Explore and enjoy.

LONGWAVEdates: Wed 5 - Sat 8 Novembertimes: 7.30pmtickets: £11running time: 80 minsage guide: 12+

Two scientists, stranded in the middle of nowhere. Living together in a run-down shed. Working together to try and make sense of the strange and hostile world that surrounds them. Playing games and making music to help pass the time. Nothing for company but an old wireless.

But as the radio waves begin to rise up around them, will they sink or swim?

Performed entirely without dialogue by Tom Lyall and Jamie Wood, and created by writer/director Chris Goode, Longwave is a seductively bleak comedy with a tender heart.

dates: Tue 18 - Sat 29 November (not Sun/Mon)times: 7.30pmtickets: £11running time: 70 mins

Everything rests on this one free throw. On this one last shot. On this power play. On these last few seconds. Action Hero have got their game faces on. Bring it.With a nostalgic yearning for the simplicity of a world that never really existed, Hoke’s Bluff meets its audience on the bleachers and tells them an underdog story that’s been told a million times before. By shifting and rearranging the trite narratives of high school storylines and inspiring locker room speeches, Action Hero use hackneyed formulas and cheap sentimentality to find out what it means to be a winner (on the inside).

‘The East End? It is a shocking place... an evil plexus of slums that hide human creeping things, where filthy men and women live on penn’orths of gin... where every citizen wears a black eye, and none ever combs his hair.’ – Arthur Morrison, ‘Tales Of Mean Streets.’Join Bafta winning writer and stand-up tour guide Alan Gilbey for an evening in The Ditch, the East End’s dodgiest dive bar, where Ronnie and Reggie are having a knees-up with Jack The Ripper and a man who looks a bit like an elephant. But beyond the whelks and the pearly buttons, in a maze of secret rooms below the streets of Shoreditch, other stories demand to be heard. Part celebration of East End history, part meditation on the area’s future, Tales from The Ditch brings together a large cast of local storytellers, historians and musicians to create an immersive maze of tales less told from London’s ‘little bit of rough.’

He showed them the secret magic portal he uses to travel between London and work and said they can use it to visit Father Christmas in the North Pole whenever they want and bring whoever they like along with them.

How exciting!

If you want to go to The North Pole and meet Father Christmas The Elf says the portal is open from 10.30am until 5.30pm and anyone is welcome, especially children.

GARANCE & THE MITOCHONDRIES + STEVIERAY LATHAMdates: Thu 2 October times: doors 8.30pm, music from 9pm

Garance is a songwriter from rural France. Together with her band, a rag-tag ensemble of gifted rogues they make a beautiful, quirky and rickety musical family whose dirty tango, rock n roll and progressive gypsy stylings is perfect for The Ditch. Joining them is BBC Young Folk Award nominee StevieRay Latham, whose self-penned folk songs have earned comparisons with Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan.

THE SWING NINJASdates: Fri 3 Octobertimes: doors 8.30pm, music from 9pm

The Swing Ninjas quartet started out as a street band with two simple rules – no rehearsals, no set lists. Now they are performing around the world to massive crowds at festivals, clubs, parties and dance events. They are as comfortable playing to a Lindy Hopping dancing audience, as they are to a seated enthralled crowd – although people don’t remain seated for long.

BOUCHE + DOOLALLY TAPdates: Thu 16 Octobertimes: doors 8.30pm, music from 9pm

Bouche is the melancholic musings of a double bass in the hands of a solemn songstress, made musically marvellous by her band of supersonic superstars. They are joined by Doolally Tap’s unique hot jazz blend of rambunctious rags, swinging blues and gorgeous melodies which recreates all the original frolicsome fun of the prohibition era, which has them a reputation as one of the finest New Orleans bands around.

“XFM XPOSURE TIPS FOR 2014” JOHN KENNEDY @XFM

Welcome to the wonderful world of AK/DK, where musical structure has been joyfully shattered and the pieces recombined into a unique, prismic, ever changing barrage of high energy sound and melody. With a reputation for raucous live shows, the sound they make from two drumkits, a bank of keyboards and a heap of enthusiasm is totally irresistable.

MA POLAINE’S GREAT DECLINE + RAMSHACKLE UNION BANDdates: Sat 18 Octobertimes: doors 8.30pm, music from 9pm

Taking inspiration from the jazz of Billie Holiday, delta blues of Howlin’ Wolf, genre sidestepping of Tom Waits and some good old fashioned life experience, Ma Polaine’s Great Decline return by popular demand along with one of the UK’s leading purveyors of old time folk and blues, Ramshackle Union Band; a harmony driven folk and blues four-piece with sumptuous vocals, bracing guitar, banjo, bass and drums.

MASTERCLASSES

CHRIS GOODE & COMPANY MASTERCLASSLED BY CHRIS GOODE AND JAMIE WOOD

dates: Fri 7 & Sat 8 Novembertimes: 10.30am-5.30pmtickets: £60 (2 day course)

To coincide with Chris Goode & Company’s only London performances of Longwave, this masterclass takes as its departure point the show’s framing as a ‘play without words’, to create an exploratory space for working without spoken text and with the different kinds of absence that might imply.

In a two-day masterclass for theatre and performance makers of all stripes, led by director Chris Goode and performer Jamie Wood, we’ll play with the unspoken and the unspeakable, with the fringes of silence and the edges of utterance; with the moments where words fail, where language eludes us, where there’s nothing left to be said.

GILLIE KLEIMAN MASTERCLASSPERFORMING LEISURE

dates: Sat 6 & Sun 7 Decembertimes: 10.30am-5.30pmtickets: £50 (2 day course)

This workshop will investigate the links between practices of pleasure and leisure to processes of performance-making; it is about the connections between personal and professional lives, between recreation and work, between enjoying and having other people enjoy.

ACCESS• We need to make hirers and audiences

aware that as a Grade II listed building which is still developing as a venue, some areas have very limited accessibility for anyone with mobility impairments. We have a lift from pavement level to the ground floor of the building, allowing for access to the Council Chamber, Mayors Parlour and accessible toilet.

• There is limited access to the Assembly Hall via 32 broad steps, with two landings and continuous bannisters. People with lesser mobility impairments may find them relatively easy to climb. A mechanical stairclimber is available for the Assembly Hall steps, which is only suitable for certain wheelchairs. We need to advise that this is a far from satisfactory means of climbing and that some wheelchair users may not be happy using this equipment.

• The Committee Rooms are accessible via 28 steps, with two landings and continuous bannisters.

• We ask audiences to check and confirm individual requirements prior to any event.
