For Shore Medical Center, 2013 was a year filled with
significant achievements. I am proud of the efforts of
everyone in our organization that helped make these
accomplishments possible.
In June, Shore became the first hospital
in New Jersey and, at the time, one of
only 39 organizations worldwide, to
receive Planetree Patient-Centered Care
Designation. This designation reflects the
work of all Shore employees, physicians
and leadership to provide exceptional
patient-centered care to our patients.
Our strong focus on providing quality patient care led us
to form Shore’s Hospital Quality Committee. Under the
leadership of Drs. Zachary Post and Angelo Sparagna, this
group of physicians partnered with clinical leaders in the
medical center to identify opportunities to improve hospital
processes and patient outcomes through evidence-based
medicine. Thanks to these and other quality improvement
efforts, The Joint Commission named Shore Medical Center
a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures, honoring Shore’s
performance in the areas of heart attack, heart failure,
pneumonia and surgical care.

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Additionally, we engaged in new opportunities to improve
our service lines - including the expansion of the Shore
Cancer Center’s Medical Oncology Unit and our new
affiliation with Advanced ICU Care®, a national provider of
ICU monitoring services. Through this partnership, we are
able to provide our ICU patients 24/7/365 remote monitoring
by intensivist physicians, coordinating with Shore’s onsite
team of critical care physicians and nurses.
Shore also entered into new partnerships with organizations
like Onsite Neonatal Partners complementing our existing
ties with Penn Medicine, the Jefferson Neuroscience
Network and Advanced Radiology Solutions.
These achievements and more are possible due to the
passion and dedication of the entire Shore community, from
our Board of Trustees, physicians and front-line staff to our
affiliates and community partners. It is my pleasure to serve
an organization so committed to its Vision of delivering the
best in class cost performance, the highest level of clinical
quality and exceptional customer service to the patients,
families, and the community we serve.
Sincerely,
Ron JohnsonPresident & Chief Executive Officer, Shore Medical Center
In 2014 we are excited to introduce Shore Quality Partners, a
clinically integrated network that will better align the medical center
and independent and employed physicians in a way that is beneficial
and cost effective for all. The success of Shore Quality Partners,
created by physicians, for physicians, is crucial for all parties involved.
The healthcare realm is evolving at a breakneck pace. As the
leaders of Shore Memorial Health System and Shore Medical
Center, we are committed to remaining proactive in response to
any global healthcare changes in order to best position Shore for
success. In 2014 and beyond, our continued focus on quality and
excellence will not waver.
With Regards,
David Beyel, Chairman
Shore Memorial Health System Board of Trustees
Gerald J. Corcoran, Esq., Chairman
Shore Medical Center Board of Trustees
A NOTE FROM THE BOARD CHAIRSOf Shore Medical Center and the Shore Health System
4
On behalf of the various Boards of Trustees serving the
Shore Memorial Health System and its affiliated entities, we
would like to take this opportunity to celebrate our achievements
from another successful year of providing exceptional care to our
community while casting a hopeful eye toward what is a bright
future for our entire organization.
In the face of local and national healthcare
environments that are constantly
changing, it is our charge to put Shore
Medical Center and the Shore Health
System in the best possible position for
continued growth and success in the
marketplace. In 2013, we saw the system
make great strides while gaining national
recognition for both the quality of care
provided and the experience of those who
visit our tremendous facility.
In June of 2013, Shore Medical Center was
recognized by the Planetree Organization
as a Planetree Patient-Centered Care facility, a truly rare honor
that makes Shore one of a kind in the entire state of New Jersey.
We are extremely proud of everyone who helped make this
prestigious achievement possible. Their collective efforts and
enthusiasm for their work inspire us as leaders each day.
We also saw tremendous growth in Shore Physicians Group
(SPG), led by the debut of our first Shore Urgent Care facility
in Northfield, NJ, as well as Shore Crucial Care in Atlantic City,
NJ. Together with an influx of new provider talent and practice
locations, these developments have positioned SPG well for
continued expansion and success. Under the expert leadership
of Chief Administrative Officer Mark Stephens, our vision for
creating a seamless continuum of care for the members of our
community is well on its way to becoming a reality.
2013 GROWTH
In October, the Shore Cancer Center unveiled a new third-floor
Medical Oncology Suite. The 3,600-square-foot expansion project
features eight spacious infusion therapy bays, three exam rooms,
a family waiting room, blanket warmer, nutrition center and a
fully equipped and stocked pharmacy with a full-time oncology
pharmacist. The project allows Shore to better serve southern
New Jersey’s cancer population.
Throughout 2013, Shore Medical Center furthered
its commitment to providing exceptional, patient-
centered care to the community. This took place
through expansion of facilities and the adoption
ofseveralaffiliationagreements.Together,these
developments maintain Shore’s standing as a
leading regional medical center that keeps pace
with the latest in technological advances and
patient care. These areas of growth position us to
maintain our commitment to providing the highest
quality patient-centered care in the region.
Advances in Cancer Care
5
In January, Shore was pleased to welcome the expert
neonatologists from Onsite Neonatal Partners to its medical
staff. This nationally-renowned group provides neonatal and
pediatric care on Shore’s third-floor labor and delivery unit as
well as the groundbreaking Pediatric Care Center, which features
separate, child-centric emergency and inpatient facilities.
Onsite’s neonatologists are pediatricians who have received
years of specialized training in the care of premature and fragile
newborns, including three years of additional training following a
three-year pediatric residency.
Advanced ICU Care®
Also in January, Shore Medical Center revolutionized the
practice of intensive care medicine by partnering with Advanced
ICU Care®, the nation’s largest provider of tele-ICU services.
This program includes 24/7/365 monitoring of patients by highly
trained intensivist physicians who complement Shore’s onsite
team of expert physicians and nurses to provide exceptional care
around the clock.
Shore is the first medical center in New Jersey to implement
this program, which is demonstrated to improve patient care
and to meet the best practice standard of 24/7/365 intensivist
oversight for all ICU patients. State-of-the-art video capabilities
allow Advanced ICU Care to monitor patients remotely, and
in-room cameras and video screens provide an opportunity for
face-to-face communication between Advanced ICU Care, Shore
physicians and nurses, and patients and their families when the
need arises.

COMING IN 2014
7
As Shore Medical Center continues to refine its administration of care in the wake of the substantive healthcare reform, leadership
and administration are always aware of the necessity for continuous performance and quality improvement. Throughout 2014, the
medical center will continue to set the standard for quality by embracing technological advances and benchmarks.
Embracing Technology in the Administration of CareIn June of 2014, Shore Medical Center will implement
Computerized Provider Order Entry, better positioning the
medical center to provide patients with an accurate, efficient
and highly accessible health record. As healthcare providers
enter orders electronically rather than on paper, benefits of the
program include real-time access to active and historical orders;
automated transmission of orders to servicing departments
such as radiology and the laboratory; improved communication
between providers and pharmacists; and the reduction of
interpretation and/or transcription errors due to misread
handwriting. Multiple project teams have worked intently to
implement this program and educate physicians and staff to
ensure a smooth transition and
uninterrupted care for patients.
Shore Medical Center Launches Physician and Patient PortalsIn 2014, Shore Medical Center will launch Patient and Physician
Portals designed to improve the healthcare experience for
patients and providers alike. Created in partnership with NJ
SHINE, a state grant-funded Health Information Exchange that
also includes Cape Regional Medical Center and the Inspira
Health network, the interactive Web sites facilitate the real-
time sharing of medical information to improve the quality of
care and possibly avoid serious events such as adverse drug or
allergic reactions.

that distinguish themselves for their quality will be well positioned
to thrive. In 2013, Shore Medical Center continued to
demonstrate its commitment to providing the highest
quality care to the surrounding community through
the following initiatives and honors.
In 2013, Shore Medical Center launched its Hospital
Quality Committee. Led by Chairman Dr. Zachary
Post and Vice Chair Dr. Angelo Sparagna, it is made
up of physicians, members of senior leadership
and administrative directors. Together, their goal
is to enhance Shore’s strong reputation for providing
quality care through the continual assessment and improvement
of systems, processes and outcomes, identifying opportunities for
improvement and modeling practices on evidence-based medicine.
Shore Medical Center was honored by The Joint Commission as
a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® for 2012. The award
honors Shore for clinical excellence in the areas of heart attack,
heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. The medical center is
one of only 1,099 hospitals nationwide recognized by The Joint
Commission for exemplary performance in using evidence-based
clinical processes that are shown to improve patient care.

2013 QUALITY HIGHLIGHTS
Measuring ExcellenceAn uncompromising commitment to quality patient care is at the heart of everything we do at Shore Medical Center. Shore voluntarily
submits clinical data to the national Hospital Compare database, a quality clearinghouse that is part of the Department of Health and
Human Services’ Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA).
The scientific evidence gleaned from patient medical records is converted into a percentage rating that conveys Shore’s adherence
to defined protocols in the areas of heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care improvement, stroke and venous
thromboembolism (VTE), commonly referred to as blood clots.
When patients select their healthcare facility, performance improvement data serves as a useful tool. However, prospective patients must
understand that all reported data reflects a snapshot in time and should be taken into consideration with many other factors. These include
past experiences with the facility, patient satisfaction scores, actual outcome measurements and the recommendation of physicians, family
members and friends.
Heart Attack Core MeasuresA heart attack (also called an acute myocardial
infarction, or AMI) happens when the arteries
leading to the heart become blocked and the
blood supply slows or stops. These measures
deal with some of the standards of care that,
if appropriate, are provided to someone who
has a heart attack. The graph shows the
percentage of patients at Shore Medical Center
who received treatments known to be effective
for most adults who have had a heart attack,
while comparing them to the 1st quarter 2012
through 1st quarter 2013 CMS Top 10
percent benchmarks.
OverallShore Medical Center continually strives to
improve the process of applying the core
measures protocols in treating heart attacks,
heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care,
stroke and blood clots. In 2013, overall scores
for each category are compared to the top 10
percent of hospital performance in the nation
(benchmarks of care). These benchmarks
are calculated by the CMS based on hospitals
throughout the nation that submit data to its
clinical data warehouses.

Pneumonia Care Core MeasuresPneumonia is a serious lung infection that causes difficulty
breathing, fever, cough and fatigue. These measures show some
of the recommended treatments for pneumonia. The graph shows
the percentage of patients at Shore Medical Center who received
treatments known to be effective for most adults with pneumonia and
compares them to the 1st quarter 2012 through 1st quarter 2013 CMS
Top 10 percent benchmarks.
VTE Core MeasuresBecause hospital patients often have to stay in bed
for long periods of time, any patient who is admitted
to the hospital is at increased risk of developing
a blood clot in the veins, known as venous
thromboembolism (VTE). Blood clots can break
off and travel to other parts of the body and cause
serious problems, even death. Fortunately, there
are safe, effective and proven methods to prevent
blood clots or to treat them when they occur. The
VTE measures show recommended care known to
prevent or treat blood clots and compares them to
1st quarter 2012 through 1st quarter 2013 CMS Top
10 percent benchmarks.
Heart Failure Core MeasuresHeart failure is the weakening of the heart’s ability to pump blood
throughout the body. When heart failure is present, the body doesn’t
receive sufficient oxygen and nutrients. These measures show some of
the standards of care that, if appropriate, are provided to someone who
has heart failure. The graph shows the percentage of patients at Shore
Medical Center who received treatments known to be effective for most
adults who have heart failure, while comparing them to the 1st quarter

Stroke Core MeasuresA stroke, sometimes called a “brain attack” occurs when blood flow
to the brain is interrupted. When a stroke occurs, brain cells in the
immediate area begin to die because they stop getting the oxygen
and nutrients they need to function. Getting the right care at the
right time can help reduce the risk of complications and another
stroke. These measures show some of the standards of stroke care.
Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) Core MeasuresHospitals can reduce the risk of wound infection after surgery by
making sure patients get the right medicines at the right time on

Planetree Organization Honors Shore Medical Center for Its Passion and Commitment to Patient-Centered Care
SPIRIT OF SHORE: A PLANETREE INITIATIVE
A five-year journey by Shore Medical Center administration,
physicians and staff to establish a culture of patient-centered
care reached its apex in June of 2013 when the medical center
was awarded the prestigious Planetree Designation by the
international Planetree Organization.
At the time of this honor, Shore was the 39th
healthcare facility in the world to receive
Planetree Designation, and remains the only
one in New Jersey to do so. The Planetree
Designation Program was created to recognize
hospitals and continuing care communities around
the world that have embraced and implemented
patient- or resident-centered care in a comprehensive
manner. The program is based on Planetree’s decades of
experience in working with patients, residents, families and
healthcare professionals.
Since the implementation of its Spirit of Shore program in 2008,
Shore Medical Center has been on a journey to obtain
Planetree Designation, at the same time continually
improving the quality of clinical, emotional and
spiritual care for its patients. Among the Shore
initiatives that fall under criteria for earning
Planetree Designation are patient-directed
visitation, establishing processes for proactively
sharing medical information and the creation of
a healing environment that cares for the patient’s
physical, mental and spiritual needs.
18
19
Demonstrating AchievementIn October, Shore Medical Center was formally presented with its
Planetree Designation award at the Planetree Annual Conference
in Montreal, Canada. The medical center was well represented
throughout the conference, with seven staff members leading
presentations about the exemplary patient-centered initiatives
underway at Shore, more than any other healthcare organization
attending the event. Lectures and presentations included
sessions about Shore’s revolutionary tele-ICU program; patient-
centered care planning; development of a community art gallery
program; Guest Patient Services (GPS) Program; the Spirit of
Shore new-hire retreats; and palliative care.
Celebrating ExcellenceThroughout the summer and autumn, Shore held several special
events to celebrate its Planetree Designation and honor the
exceptional caregivers who made it possible. A September
Designation Dinner allowed members of the medical center
community to gather in a formal setting and recognize their
achievement. In October, members of Shore’s administration, Board
of Trustees and Planetree presided over a tree planting ceremony
along Medical Center Way across from Shore’s main entrance.
A sycamore tree was planted as a permanent symbol of this
prestigious achievement.
With Planetree Designation achieved, the entire Shore Medical
Center organization has turned its attention to taking patient-
centered care to new heights in order to provide the highest quality
of care to the members of the community.
In the last several years, Shore Medical Center has introduced
several patient-centered care initiatives that include the creation of
administrative rounds and patient-directed visitation. A Planetree
Resource Room was created in Shore’s state-of-the-art Surgical
Pavilion and made available to patients and their families.
Patient and Family Advisory CouncilShore’s Patient and Family Advisory Council is made up of
former Shore patients and family members, community members
and volunteers. Group members share stories, provide valuable
feedback on their hospital experiences and assist leadership in
decision making by incorporating their experiences into Shore’s
philosophy and operation. Shore staff members also use these
meetings to educate the council about the medical center and
healthcare issues in general.
No One Dies AloneNo One Dies Alone is a volunteer program that provides
companions for patients near death who do not have any family
or close friends to be with them in their final hours. Volunteers
sit with patients and offer solace through meditation, music,
poems or simply through touch.
Integrative TherapyShore’s utilization of integrative therapies works in tandem
with traditional healthcare services for acute pain, symptom
management and stress management. Our Patient Comfort
Menu includes back and hand massages in addition to
reflexology and Reiki treatments. Spirit of Shore team
members, many of whom hold certifications in integrative
therapies, provide complimentary chair massage, Reiki, healing
touch, hand massage and aromatherapy sessions for members
of the community, physicians and hospital staff.

the most.
Circle of Friends This group of Shore employees and
volunteers creates, collects and distributes
handmade blankets, shawls and lap covers
for patients in need of a little comfort.
Caring Clowns Shore’s Bumper “T” Caring Clowns use
laughter to brighten a patient’s day. These
volunteers, each possessing the honorary
degree of “funnyboneologist,” are trained in
sensitivity and listening in medical settings.
Pet Therapy Volunteers are not all of the two-legged
variety. Pet therapy at Shore provides an
opportunity for patients to visit with one of
the medical center’s trained therapy dogs.
Activity and Book Carts Patients and their families can take
advantage of a fun distraction, whether it
is a good book, a board game or a puzzle
donated to Shore and distributed by one of
our dedicated volunteers.
Care for the CaregiverOne of the vital components of providing patient-centered care is the
recognition of the exceptional effort caregivers put forth on a daily basis to
help patients heal. Simple gestures such as a pat on the back or a fun event
go a long way toward saying “thank you” to the passionate men and women at
Shore who provide care.
In 2013, Shore offered several special programs to employees, including a
discount program for area entertainment and shopping venues, enhanced
pharmacy services and access to cardiovascular exercise equipment within
the medical center after work hours.
Throughout the year, events were held to bring staff together outside of the
work environment, including Shore’s employee softball league, a Summer
Beach Bash held at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier and Water Park, and monthly
Spirit of Shore socials.

SHORE MEDICAL CENTER FOUNDATION
In 2013, Shore Physicians Group (SPG) experienced tremendous
growth, expanding to include more than 40 providers in a total
of nine locations throughout southern New Jersey. This managed
expansion diversified SPG’s offerings while introducing new
geographic areas to the SPG philosophy of treating members of
the South Jersey community with compassion and a personal
touch. SPG’s multidisciplinary approach to care grew to add
pediatrics, neurology and rheumatology to its roster of services
that also includes internal medicine, family medicine, general,
laparoscopic, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and
pulmonary medicine.
In January, SPG unveiled its first Urgent Care center, located at
2605 Shore Road in Northfield. Led by Medical Director Gregory
Carson, M.D., Shore Urgent Care provides walk-in medical care
seven days a week, with physicians on staff to care for a variety of
medical problems for those who either don’t have a primary care
physician or can not get an appointment to see their provider.
Also in January, SPG opened a bilingual family medicine practice
in Egg Harbor Township, led by Marlene Rodriguez, M.D. The
office is located in the Harbor Village Square Shopping Plaza, at
the corner of Ocean Heights Avenue and Zion Road.
In March, SPG opened a new family and internal medicine office
at 401 Bethel Road in Somers Point, combining the practices of
longtime area physicians Angelo Sparagna, III, M.D., D.A.B.F.P.,
and William E. Hooper, Jr., M.D., and adding Ann MacMurray,
M.S.N., N.P.-C., C.C.R.N. In September, the practice welcomed
internist Jon Pomeroy, D.O., while rheumatologist Linda Brecher,
D.O., F.A.C.O.I., F.A.C.P., joined the practice in October.

providers. SPG’s location in Northfield added family medicine
specialist Seblewongel Bulcha, M.D., to its roster of providers.
The husband and wife team of internist Ulices Perez, M.D.,
F.A.C.P., A.B.I.M., and pediatrician Aixell Mercedes, M.D., F.A.A.P.,
A.B.P., assumed the Ocean City family medicine practice of

and medical outcomes.
In October, SPG added neurology to its roster of medical
specialties, welcoming David Roeltgen, M.D., to its flagship
location in Northfield.
As 2014 gets underway, Shore Physicians Group anticipates
another successful period of growth in its number of providers and
locations, increasing its ability to continue to treat the people of
the community well.
In the new year, Shore Physicians Group is welcoming the skilled
doctors of Shore Medical Center’s Hospitalist program into the
SPG family. Simultaneously, Shore Pathology Associates has been
created to provide diagnostic services to area providers. It will be
led by Medical Director James Pond, M.D., who is joined by Marite
Campos, M.D., and Peter Saunders, M.D.
SPG is also expanding into Margate, with Drs. Seblewongel Bulcha,
Ulices Perez and Jon Pomeroy assuming the practice of Dr. Dennis
Piccone along with longtime Margate practitioner Jill Rogers, MSN,
APN. Dr. Perez is also opening a new, state-of-the-art internal
medicine practice in Marmora. The planned introduction of
Urgent Care services to Mays Landing, a new neurology practice
in Somers Point led by Dr. David Roeltgen and Dr. Ravi Yangala,
the expansion of services to include an endocrinology specialty
and the planned addition of more skilled primary care providers,
will further enhance SPG’s reputation as a leader in quality, multi-
disciplinary care.
As a new year gets underway, Shore Physicians Group anticipates
another successful period of growth in its number of providers and
locations, increasing its ability to continue to treat the people of
the community well.
Launching in 2014, Shore Quality Partners has been conceived
and designed as the catalyst for achieving clinical integration
through the collaboration of independent physicians, employed
physicians and Shore Medical Center. This cooperative
relationship will allow community physicians to retain their
independence while responding to both competitive pressures
and healthcare reform on the local and national levels. Shore
Quality Partners is designed to help participants improve patient
care through quality and cost improvements.
This Clinically Integrated Network (CIN) will be governed by a
Board of Directors and several physician committees that will be
responsible for developing and implementing clinical integration
initiatives and dealing with all matters affecting the organization.
Physician leadership is a cornerstone of a successful CIN. As such,
Shore Quality Partners has utilized a Physician Leadership Council
in its development and planning. Moving forward, Shore Quality
Partners will be led by a Board of Directors consisting of 12
members split into two classes: nine physician directors and three
hospital directors. This structure ensures that actions will only be
taken with support of both physicians and the medical center.
The creation of Shore Quality Partners will benefit Shore
and participating physicians, allowing each group to thrive as
healthcare continues to evolve.
