Dear Fellow Congregants,
Pesach is literally around the corner, and by the time you read this hopefully you will have
recovered from the second set, and hopefully the last set of socially distanced Sederim. The term
“socially distanced” is a term that is new to our vocabulary and probably very few people used it 15
months ago. It is now part of the vernacular, and our everyday lives. Dare I say that, there are very
few members of our Synagogue who are not familiar with social distancing and close adherents?
Pesach and the Seder are the antithesis of social distancing. Pesach has traditionally been the time to
come home and be with family, the larger the Seder the better. I remember when I was very young
it was not unusual for my grandparents to have 40 people each night for Seder, with the crowd
changing from night to night so no one would be left out. It was also traditional to extend an
invitation to an away from home service man to join us.
CBENT has gone to great lengths, while practicing physical social distancing, to maintain, at the
same time, social proximity through our online programs and activities. It is remarkable and
admirable how well we have done keeping our active membership engaged. But appealing to a
“core” group is not the only goal of the synagogue. Rather reaching out and attracting new
members and new ideas. Spring is the traditional time of renewal and rebirth, and this spring needs
to be when CBENT begins its efforts to enlist new participants and grow our membership. Our
newly invigorated Strategic Planning Initiative will be doing just that along with our Membership
Committee. Brainstorming new and creative ideas, and reinvigorating some of our historically
dependable programs ( can you say Bid and Buy) will put us on the right path, but it is also
incumbent on all of us to actively contribute to CBENT’s future by being active members. Sign up
and participate, and bring someone else along, even for services!
By the time the next Shofar is published, we will have been back in the Sanctuary with limited
attendance B’nai Mitzvah. It is exciting and is really a preamble to return to some normalcy. Let’s
hope that all proceeds with safety and success.

Wishing everyone a sweet, healthy and safe Passover! Please join the joint program with
Temple Sholom on April 29th at 7:00 PM as I present my pictures and experiences of
The Lessons of the Holocaust. In the mid 1990’s , while teaching in the Philadelphia
School District, I was selected by the Jewish Labor Committee and the American
Federation of Teachers to visit Poland and Israel including on site visits to the Warsaw
Ghetto, Auschwitz, Majdanak and Treblinka. This experience changed my life
including my commitment to carry out the words written in stone at Treblinka,
“NEVER AGAIN!” The Zoom link will be sent out closer to the date, and as always,
everyone is invited.
BID n BUY!! May 6th. Ellen Glassman, Joyce Brody and Karen Brown are once again
working feverishly to give us a great experience while helping raise funds for CBENT.
Please support us in anyway you can! Invite your friends and family. The gift packages
are outstanding!! Again, thank you all for making this difficult year meaningful and fun.
Yours in Sisterhood,
Marilyn
Celebrate Israel Independence Day with an epic, family-friendly and virtual concert! For Israel’s
73rd birthday, our community-wide party will feature American rocker and Jewish camp favorite
Rick Recht, Israeli legend David Broza, and many of their musical friends.
Please join Men's club for a fun-filled Magical Event. On April 18th at 7:30 PM Men’s club will be hosting a magic night with magician Ari Paul Felber. Ari is a very accomplished and professional magician that has been featured on multiple TV stations, hired by multiple professional sporting organizations, and has done over 50 Zoom magic shows during the pandemic. This is a great opportunity to enjoy something different and live. The charge is $36 per household. Contact the office and we will send you the zoom link. This will be an interactive show and is open to members and nonmembers alike. We appreciate your support and look forward to enjoying this evening together. We would also like to thank our individual sponsors for their support; Debbie & Henri Levit, Janet and Marc Belitsky, Bonnie and Gary Bernett, Pam Stein & Alan Gorberg, Sondra and Michael Gutkind, Karen and Andy Rosenfeld, Audrey and Arthur Pollin, Sarah Wolf and Rich Gordon, and Matt Rosin.
The CBENT men's softball team has been given the go ahead to begin the season. The first game will be on April 18th at 9:30 AM. The schedule will be posted on the synagogue website. Everyone is welcome to come and support our team as we take on different synagogues throughout the Delaware County and mainline region.
Ari Paul Ferber, Magician
Saturday night September 18th, WELCOME BACK BASH. We are going to throw a big party with music, dancing, food, and spirits. This is a great opportunity to shake off the COVID cobwebs and dance all night. Enjoy gossiping and catching up with friends and congregants that we have not seen since the start of COVID. We will also be honoring our past President and past Treasurer David Wolf. More to come on this event.
Marc Belitsky
Dr. Marc Belitsky
Now is my favorite time of the year! What a joy it is to wake up to the sounds of the birds
singing, to open the windows and let the spring in, to watch days become brighter, the world
greener and new flowers appearing every day! After a dark and cold winter, spent in isolation
(and after being fully vaccinated, B”H), I am filled with anticipation of being able to visit people
I love, outside of my household, and to gradually reunite with my Or Tamid family.
We just celebrated virtually the Bar Mitzvah of Ian Shapiro at Or Shalom, who did an
outstanding job leading congregation in prayer and chanting or Sacred Texts! We hope, it will
be our last Zoom Bar Mitzvah. Our eighth graders who had their Bar or Bat Mitzvah on Zoom
last year, have put extra work and are prepared to do it again, this time from the bimah in the
CBENT Sanctuary, although with a very limited attendance. As a mother, who was lucky to
celebrate my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah just a few months before the pandemic and the quarantine,
I have a lot of empathy and admiration for these students and their families, and applaud their
resilience and hard work. They are making us all very proud! And our sixth graders are getting
ready for their big day, just look at the picture and see what a beautiful, exclusive hand painted
yad each of them made in class! This year every class had multiple opportunities to lead
different prayers at student services, and their confidence and fluency in liturgy increased
greatly. Many thanks to our dedicated teachers and staff for carrying us through this difficult
year.
As the warm weather sets in, I hope to be able to celebrate many special events outside with you, and to have fun with our Or Tamid family in the open air in person, from Ready Set Aleph Bet gatherings to the Confirmation of our graduating class. On April 3oth this year we will be celebrating Lag BaOmer, a day on which according to a tradition of the geonim, the great plague ended in the time of Rabbi Akiva. May it also mark overcoming COVID! Amen.

Executive Director
An Update on Building Security, Part I
Following the Tree of Life tragedy in Pittsburgh, we chose to conduct a comprehensive security evaluation of our facility and operations, paid by the generosity of Jewish Federation of Philadelphia Real Estate Division.
Several security related upgrades to our facility were recommended. We have applied for and been awarded a security grant from The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime & Delinquency (PCCD) of approximately $30K. The grant required a 30% CBENT investment. The additional funds to pay for the project came from the Security Fees paid by the congregants and designated fund donations.
We have also applied and have been awarded a secondary security grant in March 2021 in the amount of $23,500. The grant proceeds are to be used to replace the emergency exits doors in the Sanctuary, and to apply “Bullet Resistant Film” to the remaining, unprotected glass windows.
Completed Security Projects
• New interior and exterior camera system (with recording capability)
• New extended burglar alarm system. All exterior doors are now alarmed for added interior protection.
• New Audio and Video Intercom on the Paxon Hollow Entrance
• Wireless Panic Button Alarms installed
• Kitchen and classroom doors “open alarm”. (The office will be notified when any of these doors are left open for more than 1 minute.)
Upcoming Security Projects
(expected to be completed within the next month)
• New vestibule (Paxon Hollow entrance)
• New Doorway Audio and Video Intercom (Sanctuary Lobby Doors)
• New Keypad Entry (Sanctuary Door)
• Bullet resistant film applied to both entrances
• New Kitchen Door (located between sheds)
• New Sanctuary Lobby Doors
Our goal is to protect our congregation. These upgrades will aid in securing our building and improve the safety of our daily synagogue operations.
Unfortunately, we have experienced a number of false alarms with the new system. False alarms can be costly ($250 fine); if you expect to be in the synagogue after normal business hours, please contact the office (610) 356-8700. The office will provide you with the necessary procedures to prevent an unwanted security breach alarm.

As our Talmud wisely teaches: “Just as my ancestors planted for me, I too shall plant for my
descendants.” Ta’anit 23a
The formation of CBENT’s L’dor V’dor Legacy Society was announced in the December 2020
issue of the Shofar. Now, we are actively asking our fellow congregants to join the Legacy Society.
This is a way for you to show your support for CBENT that doesn’t have any current cost to you! All
that is required to become a member of the Legacy Society is for you to tell us that you have made a
planned gift to CBENT.
Making a planned gift means taking formal action to provide for CBENT in the future, such as
providing for CBENT in your will, trust or beneficiary designation of a retirement account or life
insurance policy. A Legacy Society member must do more than merely intend to name CBENT later.
However, anyone who wishes to become a Legacy Society member will be accepted based upon her
or his indication that an actual planned gift has been made to CBENT. No documents or proof will
have to be provided.
A planned gift means that no current payment is required. Thus, there’s no current financial
pain whatsoever. A planned gift may be in any dollar amount – no gift is too small.
We already have a few founding members of the Legacy Society. You, too, can have your
name recorded permanently as a founding member if you join by June 30, 2021. We invite you to
contact any of us, or CBENT’s office, to express your interest in joining the Legacy Society, and we’ll
be reaching out to many of you personally in the coming weeks. We hope you will join the Legacy
Society to bolster the future financial stability of CBENT.
Sincerely,
The L’dor V’dor Legacy Society Committee

building thereby improving security of the all of those within the building. This is a
“live” document and this procedure is expected to be updated when new building
improvements are approved by the CBENT Board which may include an intercom
system, additional door cameras, a key fob system, driver license scanner and new
lobby doors. etc.
Entry Points - A single point of entry and exit would be the preferred situation in order
to best control and be aware of the occupants of the building. But given the current
uses, infrastructure and layout of the building - school, pre-school and office nearest
Paxon Hollow entrance and services and programs occurring near parking lot entrance -
two points of entry will be established with their own set of protocols, except for a
narrowly defined use for Kitchen doors. ALL OTHER DOORS ARE FOR EMERGENCY
EXITS ONLY.
Paxon Hollow Entrance (Business and School Entrance) - Students known to office or
school staff will be buzzed in. Staff will have a list of all enrolled students. Unknown
adults will provide driver’s license for identification upon asking to enter. School staff is
to be stationed at Paxon Hollow entrance during high traffic periods. When people are
asking to be buzzed in during low traffic times, synagogue office or school staff MUST go
to door, check driver’s license and sign in the visitor if the person trying to enter is
unfamiliar. If the person states that they have an appointment, this must be confirmed
before the individual is allowed into the building. If no appointment, then the person
they are planning to meet with must authorize entry. A visitors book has been
established that requires all non-synagogue members and their guests to sign in upon
entering the building and sign out upon exit.
Sanctuary Lobby (Services and Programs) - Door is either to be locked or attended
by a congregant or staff member at all times. Congregant is to let known people in.
Those who are unknown will be asked for their driver’s license and their names will be
checked against the membership lists or a RSVP list for events that will be kept at the
door. Members who are expecting guests should provide their names to the office and
whenever possible plan on meeting their guests at the door. Regular attendees of
services and minyans will be provided with the security code for the Paxon Hollow door
as an alternative point of entry as it is difficult to staff the lobby door during low
attendance services and maintain a minyan.
Kitchen Doors – The kitchen doors are to be kept closed and locked at all times
except in the cases of accepting deliveries and removing trash from the building.
All deliveries, whether from a CBENT member or non-CBENT member, must first
check in with the synagogue office. See Paxon Hollow entry procedure for guidance
for non-CBENT member entry protocol. When the office is closed, a synagogue
member with knowledge of the delivery must meet the delivery person at CBENT.
Deliveries through the kitchen door can only be made if the door is either
continually attended/monitored by an adult while the delivery person moves
between the delivery vehicle and the door, or the door is closed and locked behind
the person as they move between their vehicle delivery and the door.
Trash may be taken out through the kitchen door closest to the trash bins. The
person removing the trash must keep visual contact with the door at all times and
immediately re-enter the building and close and lock kitchen doors once trash is
loaded in bins.
Meetings - Effective immediately, all synagogue, school and outside groups
(ORT, Weight Watchers, etc.) meetings must be scheduled and a list of attendees
must be given to the Synagogue Office. The after-hour meeting leader will be
given the security code for Paxon Hollow entrance so that they can let
themselves in and accommodate the other meeting attendees. The dance group
must have a designated door monitor at Felinton door.
Maintenance Staff - Shall not open doors for children, adults, or any vendors,
unless they are expecting them. Front Office Staff will supply off hour meeting lists
to Maintenance Staff just for knowledge of building population (not to let people in).
K’tonton Pre-School - K’tonton has its own set of security procedures in place
that were developed in consultation with a security consultant.
