SHIVALIK FOSSIL PARK September 2, 2012 BY: [email protected] General Article No. 02 Shivalik Fossil Park The Geological Survey of India (GSI) currently maintaining fossil deposits in Shivalik Fossil Park, near Saketi, Himachal Pradesh. Some facts about Shivalik Fossil Park Geologically interesting site: Saketi Fossil Park is, a National Geological Park, preserves and displays a rich collection of fossils recovered from the Shivalik rocks of the area. The park has the rare distinction of having life size fiber- glass models of some extinct species of animals at the locations where their fossils were discovered. Location/Reach: The Shivalik Fossil Park, Saketi, situated amidst Shivalik Hills in the Markanda valley in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh. Saketi is a small village, 5 km from Kala Amb, 85 km from Chandigarh, 65 km from Ambala, 22 km from Nahan. IT is the only fossil park in Asia which houses preserved remains of prehistoric animals. About: Shivalik Fossil Park Saketi contains rich collection of 2.5 million years old vertebrate fossils from Shivalik. It covers an area of about 1.5 sq. km. It is inaugurated in 1974. Some of these fossils are in possession of the British Museum, London, American Museum of Natural History, New York, Indian Museum, Calcutta and elsewhere as reported by GSI. The animal’s exhibits displayed here are giant land tortoise, gharial, horned giraffe, sabre-toothed tiger, large tusked and elephant. A large and rare collection of vertebrae fossils recovered from Shivalik hills in Saketi and adjacent areas has been displayed in a museum in the park.
