Nobody is having more than a highschool education. Subsequently 10 new
secretaries were recruited with advanced data processing skills. They had
college education. They are in their Twenties. Unexpectedly, the
performance level of the pool fell off drastically even though doubled in
size. The manager interviewed a few of the old staff members and he learnt
that the new secretaries just did not fit in. They were in-cooperative, do not
listen and do not take messages. When their mistakes were corrected they
got offended. When new secretaries were interviewed, they told that the
old secretaries refused to accept new secretaries. Their new ideas were also
rejected. They complained their inability to use new knowledge and skills
and the older secretaries do not socialise with new secretaries"

The packaging department was the most troublesome department in Eagle
Auto Parts Company. The employees job in this department was to watch
high - speed semi - automatic packaging machines and make adjustments
20
and compensations for unexpected o6ierating difficulties. Though the work
was simple and easily learned, productivity was low. Employees frequently
neglected obvious danger signals and failed to make the proper
adjustments.
Management tried all sorts of solutions to this problem : Employees were
disciplined for making mistakes (they objected violently); supervisors were sent through a training programme; a new incentive system was
introduced. When all these efforts failed, management decided to
experiment with a retraining programme. Some of the employees may have
forgotten their initial training or perhaps it had been inadequate. In any
event, many employees were going clearly inefficient, fatiguing motions
on the job, and improved job performance would actually make the work
easier.
Management had another reason for introducing training. lt was
contemplating (thinking over) to discharge some of the worst offenders,
but felt that it should give these men every opportunity to improve before it
took such drastic action. Systematic training would head off union charges
that the men had not been properly instructed.
The department head, in collaboration with Industrial Engineering
Department, prepared a training manual that outlined all the steps required
in doing this particular job. One of the first line supervisors was chosen to
administer the training during the regular work routine of the department.
He spent several hours with each employee, going over the procedures step
by step. The results were discouraging. No improvements in productivity
were forthcoming. The operators claimed that the trainer was a spy,
seeking evidence that they were malingering rather than trying to train them. Further more. "He knows less about the job than we do - we should
be training him"'

a) What mistakes were made in this training situation?

trainer?
