A Message From The Shire President

Harvest For those involved with harvesting for the last five to six weeks it's been a very busy period – particularly without the interruption of harvest bans. This must be a first and with reasonably good weather, will allow harvest to finish earlier this year. With the late emergence of crops, a soft spring was needed which was what we got. It allowed crops to ripen in their own time, which gave better cereal yields than expected. These better yields have benefited all businesses and the community.

Acting CEO We welcome Stephen Tindale to our Shire as Acting CEO after the departure of our previous CEO for almost six years in Peter Naylor. Peter has taken up a Shire position as CEO in Laverton. We wish Peter and Heather well in their new place of work and residence. Stephen started with us on the 19th November and comes with vast experience in local government having served in Subiaco, Cottesloe, Narrogin, East Pilbara as CEO and three other shires as Acting CEO. Stephen will be Acting CEO until a new CEO is appointed which is being addressed at this very moment.

New Councillor We also welcome Jayson Goldson to the Shire. Jayson was sworn in as Councillor in the October meeting of council along with previous Councillors in Norm Jenzen, Alison Harris and Dennis Whisson for a four year term. Jayson comes with an in depth knowledge of business and financial experience gained from his position as Manager of the Cunderdin Farmers Cooperative for many years. Also his commitment to the community makes him an ideal person to represent the Shire. We hope your time is a fruitful one Jayson.

Meckering Earthquake Anniversary

Sunday October 14, 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the Meckering earthquake. To commemorate this significant occasion, the town of Meckering will host a gala dinner on the evening of Saturday 13 October 2018 and a festival type event on Sunday 14 October. The Meckering Earthquake 50th Anniversary Commemorative Event will provide a festival like atmosphere with market stalls, food and beverage for purchase and family friendly entertainment and attractions. Council is currently working with the Meckering Earthquake Anniversary Committee to obtain funding for this event, and will finalise the details next year. A huge thank you to the Meckering Earthquake Anniversary Committee and event lead organiser, Rebekah Burges for their efforts in this project thus far.

Aged Appropriate Accommodation (AAA) The eight, two bedroom accommodation units and the two, three bedroom palliative and respite units are nearing completion with the official opening and Expo planned for the March/April period of 2018. In the absence of government funding, Council is still considering the future of the old Bowling and Tennis Club building. It could be used as a meeting and common room for the AAA and encourage day-to-day contact between those living in the units.

Southern Inland Health Initiative Construction of new primary health care complex has started and is due for completion in the second half of next year. More information on its services will be provided in future editions of the Bandicoot by staff from the Cunderdin Health Centre (Hospital) and WA Country Health Service. The year 2018 will be one to remember and with that, I wish you all a happy Christmas, a safe holiday period and a prosperous New Year. See you all at the "Lions" Australia Day breakfast to start the New Year! Dennis Whisson Shire President

CUNDERDIN MUSEUM WINS COMMUNITY HERITAGE GRANT

Cunderdin Museum has been awarded a $4,500 federal Community Heritage Grant to fund a Significance

Assessment of the Collection.

The grant was announced at the National Library of Australia in Canberra on 24 October, 2017.

This year, grants worth $355,560 were distributed to 56 community groups and organisations from around

Australia to assist in the identification and preservation of community owned but nationally significant heritage

collections. In addition, Michelle Samson from Cunderdin Museum attended a three-day intensive preservation

and collection management workshop held at the National Library, the National Archives of Australia, the

National Museum of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra.

Michelle Samson said the grant was important in supporting the effort to preserve the Cunderdin museum’s

collection at the grassroots level. “While the grant provides the funds, the workshop offers the expertise to help

us protect our collection and make it accessible while it remains in the local context,” she said.

Director-General of the National Library of Australia, Dr Marie-Louise Ayres, said the CHG program showed the

commitment by the National Library, along with its partner institutions and the Federal Government, in

encouraging communities to care for the nation’s heritage, be it in small country towns or capital cities.

CHG is managed by the National Library. It is funded by the Australian Government through the Department of

Communications and the Arts; the National Archives of Australia; the National Film and Sound Archive; the

National Museum of Australia and the National Library.

Acting Community Emergency Services

Manager

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself; my name is Mr Greg Lawrie and I will be acting in the position of Community Emergency Services Manager while Mr Daniel Birleson is based out of the DFES office in Northam for the next 8 weeks.

A little bit about myself:

I am based in Cunderdin where I have been a volunteer with the Fire and Rescue Service for the past 11 Years and Captain since 2011. My service with the fire brigades officially started in 2003 with Pingelly VFRS. I have attended many incidents and hope my knowledge and experience can assist the community with any situation we are confronted with. I am available when needed in the event of an emergency and I look forward to working with the community to ensure a safe environment for Cunderdin into the future.
