    "Man's Endeavour

Realizing how precious the human life is, andknowing that Death is certain and may snatch us atany time, we should be ever alert to achieve the

object of our life, we should not make the least delaybut make every possible haste to gain our object, just as a widower is most anxious to get himselfmarried to a new bride, or just as a king leaves nostone unturned to seek his lost son. So with allearnestness and speed, we should strive to attainour end, i.e., self-realization. Casting aside sloth and

laziness, warding off drowsiness, we should day andnight meditate on the Self. If we fail to do this, wereduce ourselves to the level of beasts.

    How to Proceed?

The most effective and speedy way to gain ourobject is to approach a worthy Saint or Sage -

Sadguru, who has himself attained God-vision. Whatcannot be achieved by hearing religious lectures andstudy of religious works, is easily obtained in thecompany of such worthy souls. Just as the sunalone gives light, which all the stars put togethercannot do, so the Sad-Guru alone imparts spiritualwisdom which all the sacred books and sermons

cannot infuse.- Chapter 8, Sri Sai Satcharitra"

The contemptible pagal fakir, as they called him,was turned overnight into the hero or the weird

magician or the holy Sadhu of the place. Beforethis, Mahlsapathy and his two friends TukaramDarji and Appa Bhil had been perhaps the onlypersons to worship him. Now other people alsobegan to flock to his feet and worship him as aDivine Saint or God, much against his will, with

waving of lamps, throwing of flowers and colouredrice over him and offers of fruit and sandal. However strenuously Baba tried to prevent hisbeing worshipped as God or a Godman in theMosque, he could not stem the tide of popular

frenzy. They presently declared he was their Godor Godman sent to bless them. It was thus, thepagal fakir became the God or Godman of Shirdi.

Such a change could not continue for long withoutobstruction. Worship of anything except the

Impersonal God in a Mosque is forbidden by theKoran, and the Muslims, though few and poor atShirdi, raised their protest against such worship. He himself might have felt at first the

    8/20

incongruity of his being worshipped at all andnext the worship being carried on in a Mosque by

the mass of Hindus to the accompaniment of allthat Hindu worship implies, that is, the din, thebustle, the noise, the music, and the sacredrituals all of which would be totally unwarrantedin a Mosque. Even his beingdebaubed with sandal paste would strike any

Muslim as extremely unorthodox andreprehensible, Abdul Rangari of Thana whenvisiting Baba noted that sandal paste was beingapplied by the Hindus to his forehead, and he toldBaba, 'What is this? The Hindus are applying

sandal paste to your forehead. This is not thecustom among the Muslims." Baba had to appeasehim by pointing out that he had to bend tocircumstances. Baba's words were Jaisa DeshAiysa Vesh. This means, 'While in Rome do as theRomans do'. Baba also told Rangari that he

himself was a devotee of Allah. But if the Hinduswished to please themselves by worshipping him,why not allow them to do so? To other similarobjectors Baba pointed out that if Hindus

  • 8/9/2019 Shirdisaila for July 2010

    9/20

worshipped a Muslim in a Mosque41 then therewas no loss to Islam but only loss to Hinduism.

That seemed a very plausible argument andcontented many. But some were still dissatisfiedwith the puja that was being done to him, andsome of the more vigorous opponents of his pujawent to consult the Sangamnare Kazi for finding aremedy. That Kazi found that the only chance of

obstructing this heterodox haram puja was bythreat of force. The Hindus were no doubt themajority in the village, but the actual worshipperswere only a handful, and a few muscular Muslims, standing at the entrance to the Mosque, and

threatening force could stop this haram.Accordingly a very stout, muscular, powerful andwell-built Muslim by name Tambuli and four orfive others went up to the entrance to theMosque and stood there withclubs one morning. The chief worshipper

Mahlsapathy was a very slim, meek, andapparently cowardly sort of person, and theyhoped to stop his puja by their threats. Tambuliwent and explained to Mahlsapathy the exact

    10/20

position, namely, that he ran the risk of beingclubbed by the Muslims if he entered the Mosque

and applied sandal paste to Baba. Mahlsapathy inhis great shock and grief prayed to Khandoba andhit upon an alternative. He went upto thecompoundwall of the Mosque and without enteringinto the Mosque, used all the puja articles that hehad brought on a plate, for worshipping a part of

the compound wall itself into which by Avahana heinvoked Baba. After such invocation or Avahana,he went on applying water, flowers and scents tothe wall. Baba noted this and asked him what hewas doing, Mahlsapathy explained that the

Muslims there threatened to beat any one whowould enter into the Mosque and worship Babawith sandal paste. Then Babajudged the situation very correctly and said,'Come in. Go on doing your puja. Apply your sandalpaste here, there and anywhere. Let me see who

will beat you'. So saying he dashed his satka, ashort club, which he had in his hand on the groundwith such a thunderous sound that the fewMuslims at the entrance trembled. They found

  • 8/9/2019 Shirdisaila for July 2010

    11/20

that they would have to reckon with Baba himselfif they wished to pursue their plan, and Baba,

individually and physically, would be more than amatch for them. Besides, Baba was a weirdpersonality who could turn water in oil, and theyhad therefore still greater fear in trying tooppose Baba. So they considered discretion thebetter part of valour and retreated quietly.

Mahlsapathy entered and carried on the worship.Mahlsapathy feared that they might attack himon his way back home, and he told Baba of hisfears. Baba then gave him the assurance that notmerely these, but any others who would come to

attack him not merely at thattime but at any other time in any other place, andnot merely in this janma, but in future janmasalso, could do him no harm and Baba would see toit. Thus assured Mahlsapathy who finished hispuja and was not molested. Thus all joined in

    Baba's worship.(Source: Life of Sai Baba by Sri B V NarasimhaSwamy -http://www.saileelas.org/)

Disappearance of Moreshwar's AsthamaMoreshwar Pradhan was a close devotees of SaiBaba. He was a judge in Bombay High court. Hewas suffering from acute Asthama. He used to bea partner of my grandfather whenever they used

to play the Bridge (a game of cards). For the cureof his Asthama my grandfather advised him tovisit Shirdi and he obliged. On his very first visitto Shridi when he met Sai Baba he was offered toinhale the 'Chilim' (a clay pipe which Baba used to

smoke) which Baba gave him personally.Moreshwar was rather worried but he inhaled the'Chilim' and it was a miracle. From that momentonwards he never got any attack of Asthama.

What a strange way of curing a person of hisailment. Moreshwar thanked my grandfather and

from then on became an ardent devotee of ShriSai Baba. It was a Vijayadashmi day of the year1918, and late afternoon suddenly Moreshwar gotan attack of Asthama. The attack was severe andhe had send his servant to Bandra and requestedmy grandfather to come to Santacruz to his

residence. Moreshwar's servant told mygrandfather that his master has suddenly takenill and requested him to rush for his help. Thenmy grandfather along with my father left theirhouse. Offcourse they carried along with them

the 'Udi', which Baba had given personally tothem on their last visit to Shirdi. They sawMoreshwar in utter distress. My grandfatherconsoled him. He put Baba's 'Udi' in a glass ofwater and requested Moreshwar to drink thesame. Moreshwar obeyed my grandfather as he

was reckoning him to be his very close friend. Nosooner had he drank the water than the intensityof the attack went on reducing and in a shortwhile he was feeling relieved. Moreshwar asked

  • 8/9/2019 Shirdisaila for July 2010

    17/20

my grandfather stating that Baba had said thathis Asthama has gone for ever in which case how

come the revival of the attack? My grandfatheradvised him not to worry and in the event ithappens again he should consume Baba's Udi asmedicine. However Moreshwar was not requiredto do so any more. The consumption of Udi hadcertainly reduced the Asthama attack but there

was an altogether different kind of messagebehind this incident, which they all realized lateron. On that very day at about 2 p.m. Sai Baba hadtaken Samadhi in Shirdi and while doing so he hadsent in his typical way wireless messages to all his

ardent devotees. Of course my grandfather andfather had also received this wireless messagewhich I will narrate to you all in a later chapter.
