Mist eliminators, fire and smoke dampers, electronic controls, and blowers and fans make up the heart of a ship’s ventilation system. Understanding how these critical systems work is an important first step when researching these products.
Use this guide to learn how these products work and what they offer.
4 Critical Things to Know About Shipwide Ventilation
1. MIST ELIMINATORS - Ensure air entering the engine room is dry
2. FIRE/SMOKE DAMPERS - Cut off the air supply in case of a fire
3. ELECTRONIC CONTROLLERS - Allow for manual or automatic fan operation

DID YOU KNOW?• Dometic’s large axial fans have fan
blades constructed of high-strength PPG glass reinforced polyamide
• There are four Dometic mist-eliminator options: bottom draining, face draining, horizontal, and sump draining
• All pressure and temperature monitoring fan controls come standard with fire-system shutdowns
• Smoke and A60 fire dampers come in marine-grade aluminum or 316 stainless steel, respectively
SIMPLE, WIRELESS CONNECTIVITYDometic shipwide ventilation solutions work seamlessly with other Dometic equipment, connected wirelessly via the Dometic Smart Touch Integrated Intelligence Control (STIIC). STIIC is software that connects all of a vessel’s Dometic systems – such as engine ventilation, air conditioning, watermakers, sanitation systems and refrigeration systems – and allows crew members to control and monitor diagnostics from a mobile device.

MIST ELIMINATORS
Salt mist entering the engine room shortens the lifespan of diesel engines and other equipment. That’s why mist eliminators are important components of a ventilation system.
As outside air enters the engine room, specially designed vanes on the mist eliminators catch and stop the moisture. The trapped water drains away, never entering the engine room.
Mist eliminators are custom designed for each vessel. Consideration is given to machinery airflow requirements and dimensional constraints.
SUMMARY
• Mist eliminators extend the lifespan of diesel engines and other machinery and electronics
• Mist eliminators reduce warranty claims
FIRE AND SMOKE DAMPERS
A fire and smoke damper is a specialized closure commonly placed within a duct that stops fresh air from reaching machinery spaces in the event of fire.
Dampers come in two main types: powder-coated marine-grade aluminum or A60-rated stainless steel. Both types are available in custom sizes, and can be manually or automatically closed.
The damper actuator is a mechanical device that closes the damper. Electrical actuation is most common, and is available for 24 VDC, 115 VAC or 230 VAC. Actuation can be triggered by a remote fire-monitoring system, an internal heat sensor, or loss of power. Pneumatic actuators are also available that tie into fire-retardant piping.
A damper’s most important purpose is to keep outside air from entering a space once a fire system is discharged so the fire stays snuffed out and the fire suppressant remains in the engine room.
SUMMARY
• Damper materials are marine-grade aluminum or 316 stainless steel
• Damper actuation can be manual, pneumatic or electric

ELECTRONIC CONTROLS
System controls are designed to control fans based on either pressure, temperature, pressure and temperature, or manual operation.
Controls allow vessel operators to create balanced systems that can either be manually manipulated or set to automatic for hands-free operation.
EVC1 controllers feature a touchscreen and are used remotely to operate fans. They can monitor engine room pressure, control intake fans to ensure enough combustion air is available, and monitor temperature to control exhaust fan for cooler operating temperatures. EVC1 can also manually control fans. Pressure or temperature-only and manual-only controllers are also available.
SUMMARY
• Controls are centrally located for fan system• Controls are made with reliable, robust components • Controls simplify management of engine room
ventilation system
BLOWERS AND FANS
Intake fans pull air for combustion and cooling into machinery spaces, and exhaust fans remove hot air and/or fumes. Fans are marine-grade and custom specified or designed to vessel requirements—from small DC centrifugal blowers to large 3-phase AC axial fans capable of tens of thousands of CFM.
For more focused cooling, a diverter is a type of vane installed on an intake fan outlet that is designed to direct airflow towards heat sources to improve cooling. These are available in many different configurations and can split airflow into multiple directions.
Fans and blowers are designed to operate in the harsh marine environment and offer a high-efficiency flow-to-power ratio.
SUMMARY
• Custom-designed fans best suit a vessel’s particular needs• Look for fans made of marine-grade aluminum, 316-grade
stainless steel or composites

SHIPWIDE VENTILATION PRODUCT LINEUPMIST ELIMINATORS
Mist-eliminating grilles stop corrosive salt mist and water from entering the engine room. Each mist eliminator is custom designed for maximum air flow and minimum restriction for a given machinery package, taking into consideration air flow and dimensional restrictions.
There are four mist-eliminator drainage options: bottom draining, face draining, horizontal draining and sump draining.
• Help extend the life of any diesel engine and lower warranty claims significantly
• Can be coupled with other equipment, such as a fan and/or damper, for a multi- function assembly
Mist Eliminators can be combined into assemblies with fans an/or dampers to simplify installation
Custom shapes including angles and curves can be created. Also, horizontal grills with or without Mist Eliminators are available.

FIRE AND SMOKE DAMPERS
Dampers close off the engine space in the event of a fire. The lack of fresh air in conjunction with the release of fire retardant can snuff out a fire and save a boat from possibly burning to the waterline.
Dampers are available in marine-grade aluminum (powder coated), galvanized steel, or 316 stainless steel.
ALUMINUM DAMPERS
• Marine-grade, powder-coated aluminum frames and louvers
• 316SS hardware
• Electric or manual activation
• Custom sizes based on application
A-60 SMOKE & FIRE DAMPERS
• 316 stainless steel or galvanized steel
• Electric or pneumatic activation
• Custom sizes based on application
• Vertical and periodontal applications

FAN CONTROLS THAT MONITOR PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE
Controls are available for three-phase fans and blowers, as well as small DC fans. They can be manual variable speed, temperature controlled, pressure controlled, or pressure and temperature controlled. DC controls are temperature based.
All controls come standard with fire system shutdowns. Three-phase systems can also have fire damper control. Interface with central monitoring systems is optional.
3-PHASE AC FAN CONTROLS
• Speed control set manually or automatically by temperature, pressure, or both
• Fire system shutdown is standard
• 3-phase systems can have fire damper control
• Color touchscreen control can be remote mounted
CUSTOM SYSTEMS
Highly customized systems can be created to include:
• Variable Frequency Drives
• Line Reactors
• Noise Filters
