Sailing for Excellence
Greetings Harbor View Families!
What an exciting year we’ve had so far! I know it’s
been tricky navigating through all of the changes this
year, so I want to take this opportunity to thank all of
you for your patience and understanding as we’ve made
the transition into our new building. You are an amazing
group to work with. I’m looking forward to another
fabulous year here at Harbor View!
Many Thanks!

At the Harbor View Media Center, students are excited about a new digital reading
program called myOn. It is a personalized reading program that motivates students to
read by appealing to interests and matching to reading level. The books are an
integrated library of enhanced digital books with reading supports aligned to SC
standards. Many of these books are high interest books that excel at holding the
students’ attention. The program measures time spent reading, books read, and
forecasts Lexile growth. The students are receiving cards with their passwords at
school and are encouraged to access the website at school and home. The website is
accessible on mobile devices.
Students can login to myON at the following website:
www.myon.com
Username: 1st 3 letters of last name + 1st 3 letters of 1st name + last 4 digits of school id number
Password for K-4: 123456 Password for 5: school
Congratulations to Jenny Yang in Mrs. Dangerfield’s second grade. As of October 1, Jenny has read 80 myOn books, by far more than any other student at Harbor View. At the Media Center, we are also awaiting arrival of all the 2012-2013 SC Picture and
Children’s Book Award Nominees. We can’t wait to read them and vote on our favorites
in March!
We are also excited about the upcoming Scholastic Book Fair scheduled for November
12-16. Perfect for holiday gifts! Volunteers interested in helping are welcome to contact
Mrs. Parker.

Get Caught Reading! ….and get your picture taken for the Get Caught Reading wall!
Lots of students have been caught reading around the school
and have been given tickets for a drawing on the live Monday
morning news show. Those whose names are drawn get to have
their picture taken for the Get Caught Reading! wall and
choose a wrist band and sticker.
For the past few weeks in music, we have been observing Hispanic Heritage
Month, singing songs in Spanish and playing all sorts of Latin American
instruments in ensemble. In the next few weeks, fourth and fifth graders
will begin playing the recorder and we will be doing “Recorder Karate”, an
incentive program in which students can earn different colored “belts” for
each new skill and each new piece mastered in playing the recorder. I am
still collecting money for those instruments, so if you want a recorder,
please get your five dollars to me ASAP and please specify the color you
want: blue, green or pink.
The chorus has been meeting each Tuesday afternoon in the cafeteria to
practice. We are rehearsing for the Holiday Concert which will be on
Thursday, December 6th at 6:30 in the cafeteria.
Also, just a reminder to parents of fourth and fifth graders, if you want
to recommend your child for the “Gifted and Talented Artistic” program,
please have those forms filled out and turned in to Mr. Kacpura or myself no
later than October 12, 2012. (This has to do with students who are
outstanding in music, art, dance or drama.) Booklets were sent home last
month.
Thank you, parents, for all of your support and encouragement to these
wonderful children. You play a key role in their success!

Healthy Tips and Treats Our Harbor View Wellness Committee
has been hard at work coming up with
ideas and activities to help our faculty
and staff stay healthy. We have been
sharing some ideas on the morning news
with the students and would like to
pass on our healthy ideas to parents.
Below you will find some tips on staying
healthy and some healthy treats you
can make at home.
Healthy Tip
Combine exercise with eating well.
Exercise is an important part of any
healthy lifestyle. Regular physical
activity benefits every part of our
bodies, including the mind. Exercise
fights off a range of possible health
problems like heart disease, diabetes,
even depression. Both children and
teens should get at least 60 minutes of
moderate to vigorous exercise every
day.

Parents:
Thanks for your cooperation in the Flu Vaccination Initiative at Harbor View. Over 138
students participated. I want to thank everyone who made this initiative a success and
hopefully there will be a decrease in student illness this year. Last year Harbor View won 1st
place for Charleston County, in the Superintendent's Wellness Initiative awarded by the MUSC
Lean Team. We are looking forward to another great year with more health initiatives. As part
of this initiative, We ask that students bring in healthy snacks every week. We have designated
the following weekly snack themes: Mondays are "Veggie Mondays", Wednesdays are "Water
Wednesdays" and Fridays are "Fruity Fridays". The students will also participate in a school
wide Pedometer Challenge from October 15th through October 22. Each grade will be given
pedometers to use during their designated day. They will record the total number of steps the
classed walked for that day, and a class winner will be announced for each grade level. Join this
challenge and make it a priority to take family walks. We are excited to have another Farmer's
Market with Joseph Fields Farms this year. This fun event is scheduled for Tuesday, November
13 before the PTA meeting from 4pm to 6:30 pm. It's a great opportunity to pick up some
fresh vegetables.

Four-Year-Old Cookout In order to welcome our new four-year-olds and their families into our Harbor
View family, we had a family cookout on Thursday, September 13th. Each family was
encouraged to bring chairs and come enjoy a hotdog dinner as they met their children’s
friends. Here are some pictures of our fun time
Mrs. Bellknap gave Mrs. Beatty’s class a dog safety lesson which
included dog bite prevention. Mrs. Bellknap is the director of Furlife
German Shepherd Rescue. Students received a booklet about Dog Safety
from the American Kennel Club. In the photos they are showing how to
approach a dog and what to do when an unfamiliar dog approaches you!
