When she’s home, and more in control of her environment, she begins every day with quiet prayer and meditation, followed by reading her devotional books and calling several members of a support group on the telephone. Unfortunately, while her vacation was in a beautiful spot, she had trouble finding a place to be alone and quiet, and cell phone reception was poor. One morning she did brief devotions in the bathroom and called a friend on a public land-line and had a short conversation since there were strangers milling about, listening. The recreation and fun of time away is important and necessary, but thank God for the ordinary routine of our lives! In a church service, those elements which we do every Sunday, like the Lord’s Prayer, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Gloria Patri, are called “ordinaries.” I preached on the Lord’s Prayer recently, and how important a prayer it was, and yet it is an “ordinary.” As it should be - the ordinary things are important, and important things should be ordinarily tended to. For my friend on vacation, she found herself out of rhythm when she couldn’t tend to her spiritual ordinaries. In actuality, the “ordinaries” of our services, like “Ordinary Time” in our church calendar year, are not called that because they aren’t special. According to one source, they’re called “ordinary” because they are numbered. The Latin word ordinalis, which refers to numbers in a series, stems from the Latin word ordo, from which we get the English word order.(http://catholicism.about.com/od/holydaysandholidays/f/What-Does-Ordinary-Time-Mean.htm) Thus, our ordinaries are the ordered life of the church. They can also refer to the ordered, ordinary spiritual lives we lead. As Paul says in 2 Corinthians 13:11, “Brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.” So here we are, with September already gone, the school year begun, and vacations finished for anther nine months. It’s time to get back to the ordinary, and I, for one, am relieved. Celebrate the ordinary! God’s miracles and abundance abound in the everyday workings of the world. In fact, the word “mundane” means “of the world,” opposed to heaven. We may not be in heaven yet, but the world we’ve been given to tend and steward is beautiful and spectacular in every, ordinary day. Enjoy! Peace and joy, Martin

A VIEW FROM A PEW By Don De Vries

The Book of Exodus contains some revealing insights into human nature. It tells of people who are being brought out of slavery, but who can hardly stand the idea when adversity confronts them. They “murmur” against God; we would call it “griping.”

The first tough place for the Hebrews was found a few weeks into their trek when Pharaoh had a change of mind. When he realized that the Israelites had really left Egypt, he felt he had made a blunder. Who would make the bricks needed to build walls, buildings and pyramids with no slave nation to do the work? So, in spite of having sent them away by his own agreement, he ordered his chariots, horsemen and foot soldiers to go after them and bring them back. They got close when the Hebrew nation was facing the sea. ‘Nice going, Moses! You’ve brought us our here to die in the desert. We were better off in Egypt,” they whined. They preferred slavery to trusting God to fulfill His promise to take them to a land of their own. You know what happened next as the sea was opened. The Hebrews walked across on dry ground, and when the Egyptian Army followed after them, the sea closed up and all were drowned. The trip resumed, but food ran short. The griping resumed. “You’ve brought us out here to starve, Moses. We’d be better off in Egypt.” God provided manna to feed them every day, one day at a time. Next gripe? “All we ever get is this manna. We need some meat!” So God sent flocks of quail and the Hebrews had their meat. ‘Now we have no water! Well, there is water, but it is foul.” God told Moses to cut a certain tree, toss in into the water, and it would be fit to drink. It was done and they had their water. When they neared Mt. Sinai, the people told Moses to tell God they were able to do everything He wanted them to do. God knew that people can never completely live up to His standards, but figured the opening was a good time to let them know of His specific expectations. So, the Ten Commandments were issued. Each individual, and people today, have the complete list of God’s expectations. There isn’t a chance that any mortal human being can keep even ten commandments, to say nothing of the 500 or more social, ceremonial and rabbinical laws found in Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. If we try to justify ourselves by obeying God’s laws, we are condemned by our own failures. But He sent Jesus, His son, to die on a cross so our sins are completely forgiven, and God’s law completely fulfilled. We need no longer to be slaves, or to chase around in the desert of uncertainty, or to rely on our inadequate efforts.Through faith in Jesus Christ alone are we saved. Know what God expects, but have faith in God through Christ. Amen.

A Note from the

Gilead Music Department October 2013

Our fall music schedule is in full swing. On Wednesday, September 4, the Senior Bell Chimes and Senior Choir resumed rehearsals and played /sang in Worship on September 8. Do not despair….It’s not too late to join either group!

The Senior Bell Chimes play once a month and for special events, so a weekly rehearsal is in order. Senior Bells, rehearse on Wednesdays at 6:30-7:45 pm and we could you use more ringers. We also need to have a Substitute List for those times when one of our members is ill or has another commitment. We don’t have an “instrument” unless all ringers are present. Please contact me if you are interested in joining our group or in “Subbing”.

The Senior Choir sings every Sunday and for special events (like the Ecumenical

Thanksgiving Service next month.) I try to rehearse materials for the Senior Choir six week in advance of the time we will sing that particular anthem in Worship. In that way, if you are unable to make every rehearsal, you will be familiar with the music. Of course, weekly attendance is preferred and we always have fun singing together on Wednesdays at 7:45-9:00 pm.

The Gilead Gospel Group (“3 G’s”) is an inter-generational group of singers (5th

graders--adults) and instrumentalist (guitars, harmonicas, and percussionists). We will be singing/playing once a month with dates to be decided by the musicians. Rehearsals---to be announced

Praise Makers Pre-School thru 4th grades will sing with Penny Cameron during Church

School every Sunday and will be singing in Worship on the 4th Sunday of the month. (mostly) So if you child is in this age group, she/he will know the songs that they will sing in Worship (rehearsal at 9:30 on those days).

Junior Bell Chimes/Orff Instruments. They will be rehearsing Wednesday afternoons

at 3:30-4:15. On the Sundays that we are playing in Worship, we will rehearse at 9:15.

Flute Choir ---to be announced

Gilead Ensemble A chance for Instrumentalist to get together and play Hymns/ Christmas Carol etc. in Worship. Rehearsal-TBA

So come…….Join a Group. It’s Lots of fun!!!! Mary Temple, Gilead Music Director: 845 225 6958

WORSHIP AND MINISTRY Pastor McGeachy generally follows the lectionary each week, but there are occasional exceptions. We are making these available for those who may wish to read the likely scripture readings in advance of Sunday worship. Sunday Evening Devotional

“Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.” (James 5:13-16)

We have a new informal worship opportunity at Gilead. Called our Sunday Evening Devotional, on the last Sunday of each month at 7:30 p.m., we are gathering in the lounge for a time of prayer, Scripture, discernment and fellowship. Bring your joys and concerns, faith and love. The next service will be on September 29.

If you have any concerns about or compliments for the employees of Gilead Presbyterian Church please let Margaret Karell know and the Personnel Committee will be happy to help you. If you would like to join the personnel committee, welcome. We look forward to your input. We meet on an as needed basis. Personnel has not had to deal with any concerns in quite a few years. We are looking forward to the trend continuing.

A Weekend Just for Men

Do you enjoy fellowship with other Christian men? Would you like to set aside a few days just to be with men from all over the area, discussing, sharing and praying about what it means to live a Christian life? Then a Tres Dias Weekend may be for you. South Hudson Tres Dias will hold its next men’s weekend from Thursday night,

October 24 until Sunday, October 27 at Graymoor Spiritual Life Center in Garrison.

For more information or an application to go on the Men’s Weekend, speak with Margery Amato, current Vice President of South Hudson Tres Dias or check out the local website: southhudson-tresdias.org or the international website: www.tresdias.org .

Stewardship

Nothing that you have not given away will ever be really yours. Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951), American novelist and playwright

Wealth shines in giving rather than in hoarding: for the miser is

hateful, whereas the generous man is applauded. Boethius (480-524?), Roman statesman, philosopher and Christian martyr.

Examples are few of men ruined by giving. Christian Bovée, mid-

19th century American author

People go through three conversions: their head, their heart and their pocketbook. Unfortunately, not all at the same time. Martin Luther (1483-1546), German theologian, initiator of the Protestant Reformation

If a person gets his attitude toward money straight, it will help straighten out almost every other

area in his life. Billy Graham

One of the greatest missing teachings in the American church today is the reminder to men and women that nothing we have belongs to us. Gordon MacDonald, American pastor and teacher

The good man’s earnings advance the cause of righteousness. The evil man squanders his on

sin. Proverbs 10:16

It is required in stewards that a man be found faithful. 1 Corinthians 4:2

There are no pockets in a shroud and no U-hauls behind a hearse.

In the Holy Land are two ancient bodies of water. Both are fed by the Jordan River. In one, fish play and roots find sustenance. In the other, there is no splash of fish, no sound of bird, no leaf around. The difference is not in the Jordan, for it empties into both, but in the Sea of Galilee: for every drop taken in one goes out. It gives and lives. The other gives nothing. And it is called the Dead Sea. William Sloane Coffin, former pastor at Riverside Church, New York City

OUTREACH AND MISSION Putnam County Crop Hunger Walk We walk because they have to. Help fight world hunger in third world countries and here in Carmel! Join the walkers from other local churches on Sunday, October 20, at 2 pm at the Mahopac Methodist Church. The walk will take place on the bike trail and last for a total of 5 miles. If you don't think you can do the whole walk that's okay. Just get out and walk. Get a donations envelope from Margaret Karell and sign up sponsors for a fun event and a worthy cause.

CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide events sponsored by Church World Service and organized by local congregations or groups to raise funds to end hunger at home and around

the world. With its inception in 1969, CROP Hunger Walks are "viewed by many as the granddaddy of charity walks," notes the Los Angeles Times (Oct. 26, 2009).

CROP HUNGER WALK is a program of Church World Services, the relief, development, and refugee assistance ministry of 36 Protestant, Orthodox, and Anglican denominations in the United States. Working in partnership with indigenous organizations in more than 80 countries, CWS works worldwide to meet human needs and foster self-reliance for all whose way is hard.

Within the United States, Church World Service assists communities in responding to disasters, resettles refugees, promotes fair national and international policies, provides educational resources, and offers opportunities to join a people-to-people network of local and global caring through participation in CROP WALKS, the Tools and Blankets Program, and the "Gift of the Heart" Kit Program.

CROP WALKS form the foundation for the work of Church World Service -- without them they are not in a position to respond immediately to the victims of natural disasters, such as Superstorm Sandy and the recent floods in Colorado.. Thanks to this support CWS has staff trained in emergency response immediately available and can begin shipping material assistance (Kits and CWS Blankets) to the affected areas within hours.

Locally, 25% of the monies raised will go to Putnam County food pantries, with half of that going to the one at Gilead.

A number of our members are currently recruiting walkers. Each CROP HUNGER WALKER obtains sponsors to support this drive.

Please volunteer to be a walker – it’s a lot of fun and you can even walk with your leashed dog. If you can’t walk for whatever reason, please be a sponsor for one of our walkers.

It’s Shoebox Time! It’s time to start filling shoeboxes with gifts for needy children all over the world. The shoeboxes will be delivered by Samaritan’s Purse in a mission project known as Operation Christmas Child. It’s so much fun to fill a shoebox with small toys, school supplies and hygiene items and wrap

the box in Christmas paper (lids separately, please) knowing that you are sharing the joy of Christmas with a child who does not live with the abundance we are blessed with in Carmel. Watch for bulletin inserts and the lounge bulletin board with details on what to pack and not to pack in the shoeboxes. Collection day at Gilead is Sunday, November 17, 2013.

Gilead Food Pantry The Gilead Food Pantry is open Friday mornings from 10:00 am until noon to offer food to those who are in need. Donations of food or funds are always welcome. Food items can be placed in the basket in the lounge while funds are best given directly to Marj Williams or placed in the offering basket with the notation “Food Pantry” on the envelope or memo line of your check. The Salvation Army has begun supporting our food pantry by offering free breakfast to food pantry clients

on Friday mornings from 10:00 am until 11:30 am. We greatly appreciate their ministry! For more information on this important ministry, please see Marj Williams. While the goods received during the Kid’s Kitchen Collections have

been a great help to the food pantry, please remember that other things continue to be needed, so please continue to bring other items on non-communion Sundays. Thanks!

Gilead Church School Kid’s Kitchen

As has been our tradition, children bring an offering for the food pantry on the first Sunday of each month. We are expanding upon this tradition by introducing the Gilead Church School Kid’s Kitchen. Each month will have a different theme, and children are requested to bring up an item

related to that theme with them during “Time for the Young at Heart”. In September, the children brought home a calendar for the next 12 months to remind them what to bring each month. Please help your child to remember to bring this important offering for our food pantry ministry. The calendar for this school year follows, and will be also posted on the Church School Bulletin Board by the Church School entrance. If you have any questions about this offering project please see Diana Drake Behan.

The theme for October is Spaghetti Sauce and Pasta, and for November it

will be Cake Mix and Frosting.

GILEAD GROUPS

Faith Discussion Group Thursday evenings at 7:30 in the lounge will find this group meeting for scripture-based discussions and a reach for a better understanding of God’s word. I was taught by my dad that no one person has all the Holy Spirit, and I have found this to be true. By having an opportunity to share our understanding with other Christians, and to hear theirs, it’s amazing how much everyone gains. Join the group for prayer, fellowship, and for sharing your understanding and faith. It is a growth experience. Speak with Don De Vries for more information and answers to any questions about the group.

Prayer...In the 21st Century

Prayer is such a powerful tool. Prayer roots us in our faith, giving us discernment and a vision. God speaks to us in those quiet moments, strengthening us in spirit. It is good for His people to pray together. But what happens when our life gets so busy that we can’t find the time to be in the same place together?

A group of our members led by Rob LoAlbo have made a commitment to pray specifically for our church, its future, and the roles of its members, every Thursday night, wherever they are at 9:00 pm, for 10 minutes. Additionally, they have been posting on the church’s Facebook page as a means of reminder and encouragement. While they may not be physically together as a prayer group,

they are one in purpose, which is just as effective. If you would like to commit to join them, set an alarm on your phone and wherever you are, join me in prayer at that time every week, praying for our fold and future. Join them in their Facebook discussions on the Gilead Church’s Facebook page. Did you forget to pray at 9 and wanted to? Or maybe you couldn’t get to it until an hour later. Not to worry! Hop in when you can. Whatever you’re offering, it is fine by God, as He looks to the heart and to your commitment to Him. Remember, He longs to spend time with you.

Gilead Designers

Gilead Designers will be meeting on October 18. The group meets at Gilead at 6:00 pm. Anyone interested in creating craft projects is invited. Please see Mary Temple or Ellen Nielsen for more information.

Stretch Exercise Classes

Stretch Exercise Classes are being given every Monday and Thursday at 11:00 am at Gilead. Annina and her friend Brigitta have organized this ongoing class. There is a charge of $1.00 per class which is being donated to Gilead every month. Those with physical problems would especially benefit by these classes. Everyone is welcome. If further information is needed, please contact Annina at 845-225-7012.

Medieval Banquet

Hear ye, hear ye! We will be holding our third Medieval Banquet this coming January, in celebration of Twelfth Night (Epiphany). We will be featuring German foods and music in honor of our talented cook, Fern. If anyone is interested in becoming a part of Gilead Castle- musicians/singers, artists, kitchen staff, jesters, etc. - please see Lady Cecilia (Mariah Warren), as preparations will soon be underway. Thanks to thee and fare thee well!

So they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, The birds in the air, the cattle, and, yes, Earth itself,

And every animal that moves on the face of the earth.” Genesis1:26-28 The SpiritWalkers’ October hike is on Saturday, October 19th. We plan to hike the trails at Cary Institute for Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY, with a possible tour of Wing's Castle as well. For more information, please see John or Mariah Warren. Keep an eye on the bulletin for meeting time. All are welcome! If you would like to be kept up to date on the year’s schedule and any updates, please join the Spirit Walkers Ecumenical Hiking Group page on Facebook. All hikers must have a signed waiver on file with the church prior to hiking with us, and, if age 18 or under, a signed permission slip.

We look forward to seeing you as we explore the beauty of God’s creation!

The CNS Pre-K Program is Gilead's nonsectarian school for 2 1/2 to 5 year olds. Since it was founded in 1949, the Pre-School has been a respected community resource for early childhood education. Our staff consists of three teachers and an aide with many years of experience at CNS between them. All are active members of the community and volunteers in the school district.

The school offers two, three and five day programs. They follow the same calendar as the Carmel Central School district.

In preparing a child for Kindergarten, their philosophy is teaching the whole child to grow. They provide a daily routine balanced between academic skills and lessons, crafts, free and structured play time, music, story time, computer time, snack, and outdoor activities on the large playground. The curriculum was developed in conjunction with the area kindergarten teachers to best prepare the child for kindergarten and instill an enthusiasm for learning in a fun loving environment. Utilizing the team teaching method, three teachers give a student to teacher ratio of approximately 8 to 1. For children scheduled to enter public school in September of the year, we routinely prepare a detailed evaluation of Kindergarten readiness.

For more information, please call the school at 845-225-8044, or visit them at www.carmelnurseryschool.com, or on Facebook.
