ast month during the height of Paris Fashion Week, Supima hosted an exclusive event to showcase a diverse group of designers from around the world. From the seven recent design-school graduates that competed in Supima’s annual

design competition in New York City, to a select group of independent international designers and cutting-edge brands, Supima set the stage for the unveiling of the Supima Design Lab.

This highly selective group of fashion designers was challenged with creating one-of-a-kind designs using American-grown, premium Supima cotton, showcasing their unique pieces to a gathering of media and fashion luminaries. In announcing the creation of the Supima Design Lab, Buxton Midyette, Supima’s VP of Marketing and Promotions told the crowd, “The Supima Design Lab was created to show the

Guests were treated to a special exhibition that presented Supima in all its transformations: from the raw, natural state “cotton wall” at the entrance; in a yarn state when the fibers are twisted together into the beautiful yarn installation by the artist Lilli Bell; to the fabric state; and the magic that results from the full potential of Supima in the hands of a diverse group of designers.

It was truly a magical evening for all that

attended and the beginning of Supima’s new, ongoing effort to bridge the continents of international design with one common thread, American-grown Supima cotton.

A beautiful installation by artist Lilli Bell, of Supima fibers when twisted together into a yarn state.

Every year when the morning air begins to chill, and the leaves turn there is one constant, the fall harvest of the top 1% of the world’s finest cotton. Forget the pumpkin patches, it’s the cotton fields in the American West where premium, extra-long staple Pima cotton is grown, that is attracting companies from all over the world. It’s a yearly tradition that brings together fashion, home and international retail brands to experience first-hand how Supima cotton is harvested and learn what makes it so special. And, with interest in the American-grown cotton at an all-time high, this year’s harvest is no exception.

Companies including Michael Kors, Marine Layer, Everlane, Banana Republic, Onsen. Sloane & Tate, L.L. Bean and Supima’s long-time brand partner, Brooks Brothers, all reserved time to tour the farm to gain a better understanding of the process that goes into growing Pima cotton and how it’s harvested and prepared for the next stage in its transformation into the many luxury products we’ve all grown to love.

The day starts with a presentation that highlights the history of American Pima cotton and the properties that make it superior to most other varieties of cotton on the market. It’s the extra long fibers, almost 50% more than traditional cotton that give Supima its strength, softness and vibrant color.

From there the group is treated to a tour of the farm that includes a hands-on demonstration of how the cotton is ginned, baled and meticulously inspected by hand to ensure that each bale shipped meets the highest standards of excellence that has come to be expected of American-grown Supima cotton. Finally, the group heads out to the cotton fields to learn how Pima cotton is grown, and all are given the opportunity to experience the harvest by riding on one of the most technically advanced harvesting machines on the market.

Many things come to mind when we think of Detroit: American steel, the Model-T and the rich tradition of the American manufacturing. But if Mathew Hunt has his way, apparel manufacturing will soon follow. Hunt is the founder of GETTEES, an American-made tee shirt brand 100% sourced in the USA.

Born and raised in the Detroit area, Hunt experienced what the loss of manufacturing jobs could do to a city. While attending Michigan State University, he became interested in another rich tradition of American history, garment manufacturing and in 2014 set out to change the landscape of the Detroit manufacturing scene by building a garment factory in the metro-Detroit area and launched GETTES.

GETTEES’ collection of premium tees is made using U.S. sourced luxury fabrics from 100% American-grown Supima cotton. The company’s vertical operation and highly trained American workforce enable them to produce premium quality garments at affordable prices. Available in several styles and colors for both men and women under the Model Tee collection, GETTEES uses a custom 100% Supima interlock fabric that make their tees luxuriously soft and built to last.

It All Starts WithThe Fiber

In its ongoing effort to promote transparency throughout the supply chain, Supima, Albini Group and Oritain have announced the first 100% traceable organic Supima cotton platform for international luxury group, Kering.

Kering represents the epitome of luxury, housing some of the industry’s most sought after brands including Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Alexander McQueen, Brioni and Kering Eyewear, to name a few. In 2013 Kering set out to lead the way in sustainability with the creation of its Materials Innovation Lab. Charged with identifying sustainable raw materials that meet luxury’s highest standards of quality, MIL has amassed a library of over 2,000 certified fabrics.

Cecilia Takayama, Director of the Materials Innovation Lab at Kering said: “Traceability in fashion’s fragmented and global supply chains is imperative to create real change. At Kering we are focused on sustainable raw material sourcing and this innovative technology for our organic cotton supply chain will enable our Materials Innovation Lab greater visibility to verify farming best practices and fiber quality; ensure integrity within the supply chain; and guarantee alignment with our Kering Standards.”

Spearheading the initiative with Kering is leading Italian textile manufacturer, Albini Group. World renowned for their Made in Italy premium fabrics, Albini Group has been leading the luxury textile industry with its culture of quality and innovation for over 140 years. Albini Group’s President, Stefano Albini comments, “We are proud to be the ‘orchestra conductors’ of this revolutionary project and to have brought it on a global scale. We have chosen to collaborate with the most authoritative scientific partner to analyze one of the most beautiful raw materials in the world and we are happy that our vision is shared by such a prestigious and forward-thinking luxury group.”

Supima cotton has been at the forefront of premium cotton since 1954. Accounting for the world’s top 1% of cotton, the American-grown extra-long staple cotton has become synonymous with luxury fashion. Supima’s President and CEO, Marc Lewkowitz understands the importance of authenticity and transparency throughout the supply chain. “The Supima organization is extremely proud to be partnered on this project with the best possible partners in Kering, Albini Group and Oritain. Traceability and sustainability can now be proven, utilizing forensic sciences to chemically analyze the fiber”, says Lewkowitz.

Known for their absurdly soft shirts, San Francisco based, Marine Layer has been putting their own spin on luxury apparel with a laid back, west coast vibe. What started as a mission to replace an old vintage tee has transformed into a full-blown lifestyle brand with collections for men, women and children, 37 retail locations across the county and two additional stores in the works.

Marine Layer focuses on developing premium, custom fabrics; over 25 and counting, that give their collection of tee shirts that absurdly soft feel. Using a blend of American-grown Supima cotton, Marine Layer is able to craft top quality products that are luxuriously soft and incredibly strong. The company recently introduced ML Denim, a collection of jeans for men and women that stays true to brand’s credo: using premium fabrics, attention to detail and an insanely soft feel.

In its continuing quest for global domination, Marine Layer is set to open its newest location on November 3rd at the Avalon, a mixed-use development in Alpharetta, Georgia that includes 500,000 square feet of retail space, a 12-screen movie theater, office space, single-family residences and luxury rental homes.

From its e-commerce presence, to Marine Layer’s brick and mortar stores across 27 states, to the brands two AirBNB locations, experiencing the Marine Layer lifestyle has never been easier.
