This year sees many new products across all ranges, with specific focus on HAGANE.

HAGANE is part of Shimanos DNA. HAGANE is the manufacturing capability of Shimano, which sets Shimano apart from the competition. HAGANE allows reels to withstand long devoted use through toughness, precision engineering and innovation. The durability, smoothness and strength of the gearing (HAGANE Gear), efficient power transmission (X-SHIP) and the incredibly rigid reel body (HAGANE Body) creates the heart of HAGANE.

For anglers wanting to experience the benefits of HAGANE, the new award winning Stradic FK is the reel everyone is talking about. Voted Best Freshwater Reel at the prestigious ICAST exhibition, the Stradic FK is the perfect example of Shimanos outstanding design and engineering capability.

New models have also been added throughout the rod ranges for 2016, with specific models now making use of Nanoalloy. This technology produces a lighter, stronger, more responsive blank and is particularly beneficial for distance casting rods like the new TX9 carp rod and the Power Aero surf rod. To satisfy the ever increasing demand across Europe for rods designed for Commercial type carp waters, the new Beastmaster

Commercial range has been designed by Shimano UK Pro Anglers. For more traditional float and feeder fishing the Beastmaster AX float and DX feeder models are sure to be as popular as their predecessors.

Another ICAST Product Showcase winner was the new Power Pro Maxcuatro. This highly technical braid is actually 25% thinner than normal braided lines, which brings two noticeable benefits. Firstly, you can now fish with a thinner line for the same given strength, which increases casting performance and presentation. Secondly, for salt-water game anglers, you can now get more braid onto the spool, which is very important when using ultra-strong braid up to 50+kg in strength.

This catalogue is the first Shimano European catalogue to feature G.Loomis rods. Part of the Shimano corporation, G.Loomis is one of the worlds most respected rod brands and we have selected a range of models suitable for the European predator and fly fishing angler. The EX6 predator rods where also ICAST Product Showcase winners, so you can be sure that they are at the very leading edge of design and technology.

REELS SPECIFICATION TABLE EXPLANATION

Product Code

The product code is used by all Shimano dealers to identify the model. The number (1000) indicates the reel size.

Weight

The weight indicates the weight of the reel in grams.

Gear Ratio

The gear ratio is the amount of turns the spool rotor makes for one turn of the handle.

Line Capacity

The line capacity of the spool is shown in diameter (mm) and length (metres).

Bearings

The number of bearings in the reel and the type. RB indicates an additional roller bearing.

Line Retrieve

The line retrieve indicates the length of line in cm retrieved for one turn of the handle.

Maximum Drag

The maximum drag indicates the maximum power in kilos that the drag can be set to.

Spare Spool

Many reels come with spare spools. The spare spool column indicates how many spare spools.

GEARING AND BEARINGS

The HAGANE Drive Gear is produced by Shimanos cold forging technology, without the need for additional machining. This delivers a long lasting smoothness, strength, lightness and power at the very heart of the reel.

X-Ship is a combination of features that work together to create much greater efficiency. By positioning the pinion gear close to the centre line of the large diameter drive gear, more power is transferred from the handle to the rotor. The pinion gear is also supported by two Shimano A-RB roller bearings. This creates more stability.

Shimano Shielded A-RB bearings use a shield to prevent contamination. This protection reduces wear, improves efficiency and deliverers super smooth performance.

Shimano S A-RB bearings are high corrosion resistant A-RB ball bearings with an extra shield for improved protection against sand, salt or dust. S A-RB bearings are used in salt water reels.

The precision engineered main Hypergear transmits more power from the handle to the rotor. Designed to exacting tolerances, it requires less effort but returns more retrieve playing torque with vastly reduced component wear.

Easy Maintenance is a small oil lubrication port that enables direct lubrication of the inner workings of a reel with approved Shimano lubricant. Some high-end Shimano reels have a line roller lubrication option.

MATERIALS

Shimano use magnesium for a select number of ultra high quality reels where weight saving is essential. The use of magnesium offers a weight saving of up to 10% compared with aluminium.

Shimano uses aluminium in many different forms.

Diecast aluminium is used for many types of reel and is most common on fixed spool reel bodies and rotors.

Cold Forged aluminium is used for some round reels, fly reels and is also used for many types of spool. Made from one single piece of aluminium Cold Forging produces great strength.

Machined aluminum is used for the very best multiplier reels where precision, strength and lightness are very important.

CI4+ is an advanced version of the original CI4. This highly technical material is 2.5 times stiffer than CI4 and is used on many high-end Shimano reels to increase weight savings. Use of CI4+ for the body and rotor also delivers remarkable stiffness for better reel efficiency.

CI4 is an exclusive material created by the inter-fusion of carbon and polyamide. It is almost as strong as metal with the lightness of a composite. CI4 is used for the body and rotor on many Shimano reels.

XGT-7 is an improved version of the tried and trusted Shimano XT-7 composite material. Used on some of the newest mid-priced reels XGT-7 is lightweight and stiff.

XT-7 is the original Shimano composite reel material. Used on mid-priced and budget reels and spools XT-7 is reliable, robust and lightweight.

LINE LAY AND LINE MANAGEMENT

X Aero Wrap is a worm gear oscillation system with a specially designed pitch to create optimal oscillation speeds. This provides superb uniform line lay to reduce loss of energy during the cast. X Aero Wrap is considered one of the best line lay systems in the world.

Varispeed and the latest version called VariSpeed II oscillation system moves with two variable speeds to lay the line flat and smooth onto the spool. This provides trouble-free, longer distant casts. Varispeed is found on budget and mid-priced Shimano reels.

Aerowave is used on some Shimano saltwater spinning reels. This oscillation system is simple in nature, yet produces excellent line lay with both braid and mono.

Shimano AR-C Spool is a patented spool design with an angled spool lip. This design enables the line to leave the spool with less friction and in smaller coils resulting in longer more accurate casts. AR-C spools are proven to reduce backlash and wind knots when using braid. AR-C spools are now standard on almost all Shimano reels.

One speed Oscillation -the spool moves at a consistent speed. Two speed Oscillation - the spool moves at two different speeds. Slow Oscillation - the spool moves slowly allowing more line wraps per cycle. Super Slow Oscillation - the spool moves very slowly forming almost parallel wraps of line.

less durable under heavy loads.

The result is a rock-solid housing and support for the moving internal gearing and greater

X-SHIP is the perfect alignment of the drive and pinion gear. This improves eciency and

increases the cranking power. There are two ball bearings for additional support on both sides of the pinion gear

SUSTAIN - HARD LURE CHAMPIONFishing with hard lures requires constant casting and retrieval and the use of a high quality reel like Sustain results in better fishing efficiency.

PUSH THE STRADIC TO THE LIMITWhen I first tried the STRADIC, what appealed to me was the reeling sensation. If you wind it with your eyes closed, it is so smooth you take it for a high-end reel. Because you can turn it easily without any unnecessary resistance, you can sense clearly whether the lure is moving through the water properly or not. You can focus totally on the interaction with the fish. Thats very important for fishing. The STRADIC is also really robust and water resistant. I fish as much in a month as my customers do in a year, so you can take it from me. Its amazing that you can buy a model of such high quality at this price.

When you go into the field, its best if you can take two sets of tackle. Thats because you can then worry less about messing up and can enjoy fishing more actively. Theres nothing better than experience for raising the level of your game at fishing. Fishing means visiting lots of different spots, trying this and that, and pushing the envelope. Thats how you get good at fishing. Take STRADIC with you and push it to the limit. If you fish that way, youll find it much more fun.

STRADIC PERFORMANCEStrength is what I look for in my gear. Of course Im going after big fish every time, so Ive got to have gear that maintains its initial performance, even after a lot of hard use. I just love the strength of Shimano reels. They last much longer than other companies reels. So theyre really tough. Ive used several so far, but theyve all been as reliable as the first one. The STRADIC also has the same aura of strength. It feels like a new reel every time and Im certain that it will always be good to use.

Each new evolution in tackle gives rise to new techniques. It really brings out the sporting aspect of game fishing. Thats why I want the coolest gear. I wont lie. I love the STRADIC design. Its totally Spartan like a race car. Theres nothing unnecessary to it. Its refined down to the last detail. And at this price, you can buy several one for every application. One of the attractions of bass fishing is that to maintain the offensive, you have to change your tackle according to the circumstances. STRADIC has it all performance, style and a great price. The Biomaster FB is a classic front drag reel which has been hugely popular with general anglers throughout the UK. Built to the highest Shimano engineering specifications, the Vanquish was the first reel to incorporate a Magnumlite CI4+ rotor which, combined with its magnesium body, makes it one of the lightest spinning reels on the market for its size.

REAR DRAG REELSFor all-round fishing (float, feeder, lure) rear drag reels offer great versatility. The position of the drag adjustment knob is at the rear of the reel making it easy to adjust, even when fishing. Also, many Shimano rear drag reels have Fightin Drag which makes it even easier to adjust the drag setting when playing a fish.

All Shimano rear drag reels have quick change push-button spools which enable the spool to be changed without adjusting the drag setting and feature an AR-C front lip for improved casting and the reduction of tangles.

FIGHTIN DRAGThe Fightin Drag allows you to quickly adjust the drag tension, with a minimal amount of clicks during the fight. This is especially important when the drag has not been set correctly and line is nearing the breaking point, or you need to put more pressure on the fish.

One of the most reliable ways to set the drag of a reel with Fightin Drag is to set the Fightin Drag lever to its maximum setting, and then adjust the rear drag to the breaking strength of the line. Then move the Fightin Drag lever back to its central position. Now you can be sure that even when the Fightin Drag is applied to the maximum setting the line will not break.

Another advantage is that by moving the Fightin Drag lever to its minimum setting it can produce a semi free spool to prevent breakages on the take.

Slower oscillation reduces the speed that line travels up and down the spool on the cast. This results less friction as line leaves the spool and reduced drag on the lead, which improves casting distance and accuracy.

COMPACT BIG PIT REELSThe smaller 5500 compact sized Ultegra Big Pit models offer a great compromise between all out casting performance and usability. Noticeably lighter in weight and smaller in size, the compact size suits slightly lighter rod actions, whilst still delivering outstanding casting performance. They also have a faster gear ratio which retrieves over 1 metre of line per handle turn.

The compact version is a great reel for all water sizes and isnt out of place on small man-made lakes or large open European waters.

As with all Shimano Big Pits a Baitrunner II spool enables you to fish in free-spool mode for the ultimate in fish-playing control.

The Ultegra XTC comes in two sizes, a compact 5500 and a massive 14000. Both models have a Baitrunner spool and benefit from the inclusion of X-ship engineering, plus 4 Shielded A-RB bearings and a roller bearing all housed in a compact body. The result is smoothness and efficiency never seen in this price range before.

Line management is controlled with a combination of AR-C spool, Aero Wrap II plus 2-speed slow oscillation ensuring superb line lay. The 5500 is excellent for fishing the smaller waters or for long range specialist fishing. The huge 14000 is perfect for large waters where distance is a must.

The Speedcast XT-B uses Shimanos X-Ship gearing for maximum efficiency. With a powerful retrieve ratio of 4.3:1 for confident fish-playing the Speedcast XT-B also retrieves a remarkable 103cm of line per handle turn making it ideal for long distance fishing. The combination of 2 speed oscillation, Aero Wrap II and a cold forged AR-C spool also make this model an excellent distance casting reel. Fitted with a Baitrunner spool, the Speedcast XT-B is perfect for long range carp angling on large waters.
