Now we have finished the research process we are now moving onto the prewriting phase of the

essay.

Prewriting entails two parts:

1. Essay Brainstorm

2. Outline

Essay Brainstorm

• The essay brainstorm is a chance for you to organize ideas in a logical way so we can write about it.

Consider the Subtopics: Define, Describe, Evaluate

You need to generate your ideas around our three subtopics:

1. Define: What is the topic?

2. Describe: What does the topic look like or what does it do?

3. Evaluate: How can you apply the topic to the outside world? How you can apply this knowledge to make good choices?

If my topic was measles, I need to include six subtopics that include Define, Describe, Evaluate:

The Steps to make your Brainstorm

Step 1: Choose Six Subtopics, using Ms. Robin’s task sheet, that include topics relating to: Define, Describe, Evaluate.

Step 2: Take your Six Subtopics group them together into categories of Define, Describe, Evaluate

Task 1

Work with your neighbor and do one of the following:

1. Help each other organize your brainstorm.

2. Give a Tellback how you organized your Brainstorm.

3. Discuss how your Brainstorm can be converted into an Outline.

The Outline

Once you have completed your Brainstorm you are ready to create an Outline.

The Organization of Your Essay

I. Intro Paragraph: Includes Hook, Thesis, Subtopics

II. Subtopic 1: Define Topic

IV. Subtopic 3: Evaluate Topic

V. Conclusion: Restate Thesis, Subtopics, and So What?

• This means each subtopic can be more than one paragraph.

Remember the In-Text Citations

• Because this essay includes 5 sources, you need 5 in-text citations.

In-Text Citations: References to your sources within your essay.

MLA Citations: References in your Works Cited Page.
