Registered Scottish Charity No SC048532Thank you so much for considering volunteering with Shetland Rape Crisis. By reading this pack you are taking your first step in helping us to end sexual violence and harassment in Shetland. Thank you.About Shetland Rape CrisisShetland Rape Crisis was set up in 2016 as a local Rape Crisis Scotland centre. Since then, our service has developed quickly, and we became an independent charity in 2018. We provide free and confidential support, advocacy and information to anyone aged 13+ in Shetland affected by any form of sexual violence. This includes survivors, their friends, families, partners, and staff in other agencies. As well as supporting survivors and others affected by sexual violence, we aim to prevent sexual violence by raising awareness, challenging myths, and campaigning. Our staffWe have five part time workers: a support and development manager, an office manager, a prevention worker, an activism worker and an advocacy and support worker.

Our ValuesWe believe that anyone who has been affected by sexual violence, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, race, ethnicity culture or religion is entitled to support. We are a feminist organisation. This does not mean that we think men cannot experience sexual violence – in fact we regularly see male clients – but it does mean that we understand sexual violence as part of wider political, cultural and societal structures and norms which encourage stereotyping and discrimination along gendered lines, resulting in attitudes and behaviours that increase the likelihood of sexual violence for certain groups. Because of this, we know that sexual violence can only be tackled, if we change our behaviours and attitudes on a systemic level. Within the last 40 years feminism and gender-equality have come very far but we know from our work locally that gender-stereotyping and bullying are still happening. Our aim is to raise awareness of these problems,

through activism work. Every year, we take part in the 16 Days of Action against Gender-Based Violence which is part of an international initiative by the UN, enabling grassroots activists to have their voices heard locally, nationally and globally. In preparation for this important event, engagement and ideas by volunteers will make a massive difference in getting Shetland peoples’ voices heard.
