Transcript of Sherri Mays Joanna Nunley Dave Buckner , Pastor Staff...
When I was a kid I played outside from the moment I finished my Cheerios to the time for dinner. After dinner I was back outside until the front lights blinked signal-ing time to come in. All day. Hours creating worlds of sand in the box out back. Time spent at “the creek” just down the street catching min-nows and crawdads. Pickup games of Nerf football, baseball in “the court” (had never heard of the fancy French cul-de-sacs), and basketball on our court. Playing Evel Knievel and jumping lines of milk cartons on my Huffy (25 was my record). Hours. With very little equipment at all. Mostly balls or bikes or buckets. No electronic devices necessary. No batteries needed. Breakfast, maybe lunch, and dinner with a good night sleep provided all the power necessary. And imagina-tion. I could be Fran Tarkenton or Walter Peyton. I was Evel Knievel. The land of sand filled with life from everywhere! Every once in a while I went a little more high tech and made a parachute out of an old handkerchief, string, and a huge nut (of the nut and bolt variety).
Life is different now. If I go out to ride my fully equipped bicycle and can’t find my gloves I am a bit off
my game. Never mind the special cleated shoes that fit into the spe-cial pedals. I can’t remember the last time I rode my bike without the spandex, padded shorts. The list goes on. A heart rate monitor, a GPS for biking, etc. Who do I think I am? Better yet, why do I get caught up in all this stuff? To steal a line from Lance Armstrong – It’s about the bike. Ride. Go have fun. I suspect that you could lay out the same kind of scenario for your life whether it be gadgets, gardening, or gourmet cooking. I wonder what-ever happened to the balls, bikes, and buckets?
Eugene Peterson once gave a bril-liant description of this kind of thing in the church as he described what happened to the Pharisees. He said, “Imagine yourself moving into a house with a huge picture window overlooking a lake with a grand view of mountains beyond. Snow-capped mountains, beautiful mountains. You have a ringside seat, before all of this beauty, the cloud formations, the wild storms, the entire spectrum of sun illumi-nated colors, and the rocks and the trees and the wildflowers and the water. At first you’re just capti-vated by this view. You sit and you

stand and you look and admire; you catch your breath. Several times a day you interrupt your work and stand before this window to take in the majesty and the beauty. And then one day you notice some bird droppings on the glass, and you get a bucket of water and a towel and you clean it. A couple of days later, a rainstorm leaves the window streaked and the bucket comes out again. One day some visitors with a tribe of small dirty-fingered children come, and the moment they leave you notice there are smudge marks all over the window. They’re hardly out of the door before you have the bucket out again. You’re so proud of that window, and it’s such a large window. But it’s incredible how many different ways foreign objects can attach themselves to that win-dow, obscuring the vision, distract-ing from the vision. Keeping that window clean now becomes com-pulsive neurosis. You accumulate ladders and buckets and squeegees. You construct scaffolding outside and one inside; you have to get to all the difficult corners and heights. You end up having the cleanest window in North America, but it’s now been years since you’ve looked through it.”
I’m looking to get back to the basics. Balls. Bikes. Buckets. Pastor Dave
Youth News:30 Hour FamineWe had a group of 30 youth and adult leaders that recently partici-
pated in the 30 Hour Famine which consisted of fasting for up to 30 hours to raise money and awareness of world hunger. Read below about the experience of one youth.
30 Hour Famine (Photos On Page 6)
“I’m hungry. That pizza looks good. Yummy, I want those cook-ies!” These were the thoughts running through the minds of PUMC’s youth last Friday night as we gave up food for thirty hours. In the past, when we were hungry, did we even stop to think that there are kids who are hungry for days at a time? There are kids who don’t get clean water to drink or know when the next time they are going to get food. Dana Alabaugh, our leader for the night, helped the PUMC youth to see what it was like for other kids who don’t get food whenever they want. Watching the video about the two hungry children made me and other kids realize how blessed we really are to have everything we have. Not only do we have plenty of food to eat at all times, but we have doctors, nurses, shelter, and schools to go to. When I’m at school, I usually think, “Could this day go by any slower? I am so tired of school!” Next time, I need to keep in mind that I’m going to a place where kids in other parts of the world actually WANT to go. We are so selfish sometimes. I know I am. We want all these material things, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how many pairs of Ugg boots or

how many Coach purses you have. It’s how you conduct your-selves every day that matters. Next time you dread going to a dentist appointment or eating your vegeta-bles at dinner, remember that many kids all around the globe don’t have those things we take for granted and that they would love to have those same opportunities every day. We sometimes felt like we were starving during our little 30-Hour Famine, but we all got through it just fine, thanks to our adult helpers and with the power of Jesus Christ. Thirty-Hour Famine was a fun activ-ity and a great experience that helped to open up all our minds and hearts to the lives of other kids around the world. I hope all of the rest of the youth had as much fun and learned as much as I did.

What’s New at Lebanon United Methodist Children’s HomeWOW! 4 new homes will be in operation at the children’s home. These homes will be completed and available for the public to tour next month. This exciting tour is scheduled for May 5, 2012 at 10:00 am, in the chapel on the grounds. These new homes will house a parent team (and their family) and 8 children ages 10-19. The total capacity of children at the home will be no more than 35. The school will remain open for all the day classes and their students. This new program will be state accred-ited and meet a new set of member-ship standards. (Accountability for the program will sure require lots of paperwork and lots of report-ing!!) Please continue to pray for and support this effort at the Lebanon United Methodist Home.
