Action Item Team Reports BBQ/Special Events Organizing the All-Things PanAm BBQ in Gage Park on June 28th. Volunteers wanted. See Facebook Hub page for meeting information. Beautification & Renewal Overleaf Business & Service Directory Identifying approaches for capturing and listing entries, hoping to launch soon. A survey of businesses residents would like to see in the area is to be circulated, to help identify opportunities and knowledge gaps. Environmental Issues Overleaf Healthy Housing Overleaf Heritage 1. Our goal is to inspire curiosity and engagement around the diversity of our neighbourhood's heritage. 2. We've been exploring ways to creatively identify points of interest in our neighbourhood's heritage through artistic installations on the streetscape (i.e. from municipal plaques to chalk drawings to commissioned works of art). 3. We hope to engage residents in a dialogue about what pieces of our neighbourhood heritage - either buildings or events or personages or our environmental heritage - we would like to highlight and bring to more people's attention. We hoped to prepare something for the Pan Am games but will probably aim for this summer/fall. We're not beholden to a specific timeframe. 4. April 23, 7 PM (contact for location; we'll meet at Steve Devisser's house) Neighbourhood Spokes 1. To have a person on each street in the neighbourhood acting as a key connector to neighbours and the Hub. 3. 3rd Sherman Hub Yard Sale on June 6th. 4. Contact Mel Walther to contribute. Sherman in Motion Overleaf Youth in Action 1. To engage with youth in the Sherman hub 2. Going into elementary schools to talk to students about what they want for the Hub.

Healthy Housing Action Team Sherman Hub Community Planning Team (SHCPT)

Quarter Report

April 2015

About our team

• Healthy Housing Action Team (HHAT) began October 2014 • Team includes:

– 8 residents – 2 service providers – 1 business representative (realtor)

• Met twice per month for first 3 months • Now meeting monthly on third Wednesday evening

Our team’s vision

• To support the vision of the SHCPT as it relates to neighbourhood housing Our HHAT vision statement:

“Healthy Housing for all our residents – existing and new.”

Our team’s mission

Our part in the SHCPT’s vision is to ensure Healthy Housing for all of our residents regardless of their level of income – low or high.

Our goal is to use the new interest in our housing stock to attract more disposable

income into our neighbourhood while preventing displacement of our existing residents and improving the housing conditions of those with inadequate housing.

Activity to date

• Reviewed Hamilton’s Housing and Homelessness Action Plan - a very comprehensive 10 year plan

• Met with the city contact

• Learned that the plan requires $490 million for full funding and that $30 million is

available over five years

• Met with Options for Homes, a non-profit condominium builder. 20 years experience in building affordable home ownership.

Page 11: SHERMAN HUB COMMUNITY PLANNING TEAM MINUTES · 2015. 4. 6. · SHERMAN HUB COMMUNITY PLANNING TEAM 6. New Business a. Lucy Park Celebration Small Grant Application Moved by Sarah

• Met with Habitat for Humanity Hamilton. A build is taking place in our

neighbourhood near Sherman and Barton. We plan to have a newspaper article to inform residents of this opportunity for affordable home ownership.

• Provided an HHAT team member to help with the tenant survey at 150 Sanford

where unsatisfactory conditions were brought to the attention of City Staff and the local media. (Survey strongly supported by GALA members. Tenants receiving support from Councillor Green’s office through newly hired community developer, Rebecca Doll.)

• The property owner, Tourbillon (Toronto) subsequently sold to a new owner.

Present activities

• Maintain contact and support Options for Homes and Habitat for Humanity projects

• Continue to identify new housing partners to support

• Build the capacity of our team

– Article about housing in next SHN inviting resident participation

• Encourage a neighbourhood conversation leading to a widely held resident’s vision for our housing

YOU are invited to join us!

Wednesday, April 22 - 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm

Mission Services, 196 Wentworth St N (just north of Cathy Weaver School

A) We focus on:Advocating for an equitable use of the roadway system from a neigbourhood perspective with the goal of making our community more livable, and we support and advovate for Complete Streets in our community.

B) What we’ve been up to:Renamed ourselves “Sherman In Motion” (formerly

Sherman Hub Traffic Concerns Action Item Team)

Participated in a Mohwak Traffic Engineering Project Class in which students were asked to investigate and develop solutions for real-life issues within a defined geographic area. At the invitation of the course instructors, Steve Cooper & Steve Maloy, we presented a list of specific traffic issues within the Sherman Hub and discussed the impotance of balancing concerns of vehicular traffic with those of pedestrias – specifically the residents of the area. Steve & Steve will be presenting the results of the class investigations to us some time over the next few months.

Drafting a letter to our councillor supporting the conversion of north-south oneway streets in our community to 2-way.

C) What we’re planning:• Advocating for better cycling routes through our community.• Involvement in the current City of Hamilton Transportation Master Plan public review.

D) Next meeting:April 7th (tomorrow); regular meetings are the 2nd Tuesday of every month. Contact us at: [email protected]
