Message from the Chair

This is my last opportunity to greet you in print rather than in person. Soon

for most of us (all too soon for a few of us) we will be greeting each other

in person: shaking hands, waving across a room, and buying each other

drinks.

I've written before that we are all tremendously excited to be hosting you in

Toronto. We have prepared what we feel are interesting, appealing, and

engaging panels and events for your delectation. The spirit of World Fantasy

can also be found in the quiet places: renewing old friendships and making

new ones, pleasant conversations, exciting discoveries, and the pleasure of

spending time with like-minded people who share a love of the fantastic in

its many forms.

We sincerely hope that the 2012 World Fantasy Convention lives up to your

expectations, and to ours.

On behalf of us all,

See you soon!

Peter Halasz

Chair, WFC Toronto 2012

Hospitality

Banquet

Do you have your banquet tickets yet? Better act fast! If you are thinking about attending the banquet, think about purchasing

your ticket sooner rather than later. The final cut off date is October 17, but we WILL close sales and move to waiting list

before that date should we reach the seating limit. Tickets are going quickly and you don't want to miss out on our four

course luncheon.

Interesting Banquet Trivia: Currently the Roasted Alberta Strip Loin of Beef is the most popular entrée, chosen twice as often as

the Supreme of Chicken and five times as often as the Portobello Mushroom Stack. What will YOU choose?

To buy your ticket or see more detail on the meal options, visit the banquet page at http://wfc2012.org/pr-banquet01.html

Banquet tickets are NOT refundable. Entrance to the banquet requires both a banquet ticket and a WFC 2012 membership. All tickets must be ordered by October 17th, 2012, as there will be NO tickets available at the door for purchase at the convention.

Party Suites

We still have some slots for launches, parties, and other events in our suites, particularly daytime slots. Contact

[email protected] for more information or to request or confirm a slot. Party suites must be reserved through Hospitality

and we need to hear from interested parties by October 5. Suite availability is limited.

The "official party" floor is ten, all room parties on that floor are booked by hospitality.

If you are going to have a group in your room outside of this, please request a room on our noise floor through Mark at

[email protected].

All parties and events are governed by hotel policy.

Hospitality Suite

What are the tastes of Toronto? Everyone thinks of maple syrup, beer, and bacon, but Toronto is as diverse as Canada is large,

and our local flavours range from classic European to spicy Caribbean. We can't promise to sample everything, but we hope to

share some special dinners with you: we're currently planning for Greek, Chinese, and Caribbean. No matter what, we will have a

wide variety of food and drink available!

The Hospitality Suite will be open from 2pm to 2 am Thursday, 8am to 2am Friday & Saturday, 8am to TBA Sunday. Gluten-free

and other dietary restriction foods will be available; ask suite staff for help if you don't see what you're looking for.

ABMs in Canada

At past conventions members who have US bank accounts have had trouble taking money

out at some ABMs.

If your card is part of either the Cirrus or Interac networks, you should have no problems

taking money out at any ABM. But, to be on the safe side, you should bring what you‟d

consider to be enough cash with you.

Your card should be accepted by most merchants‟ debit machines. But not all restaurants

downtown take debit cards.

Restaurants and ShoppingA more comprehensive list of restaurants and shopping will be available in the Pocket Programme, but

here are some highlights to kick off your planning.

Nearby Restaurants

Within a five minute walk of the hotel…

Tim Hortons

9005 Leslie St

(905) 882-9990

timhortons.com‎

This chain of donut shops is a Canadian institution. With its selection of good coffee, donuts, muffins, breakfast

sandwiches, and bagels Timmy‟s is the perfect place to start your day. Inexpensive.

Honest Lawyer Restaurant

115 York Boulevard

(905) 886-5879

honestlawyer.com‎

Applebee‟s type menu, lots of beer, mediocre food and forced cheerfulness. Okay if you are in the mood for a

mostly harmless evening out.

Moderate.

Fox And Fiddle

115 York Boulevard

(905) 886-0637

www.foxandfiddle.com

There are dozens of “Fox and” ersatz public houses sprinkled all over Toronto. The Fox and Fiddle is one of the

better locations, with a good selection of beers on tap and a menu of somewhat authentic „pub grub‟.

Restaurants and Shopping (con’t)The Host

Excellent Indian cuisine prepared to your preference of spiciness.

Moderate to Expensive

The Keg Steakhouse

162 York Boulevard

Richmond Hill, ON L4B 3J6

(905) 882-0500

kegsteakhouse.com‎

This north Toronto addition to the Keg family serves excellent steaks in a casual environment. Not the finest steakhouse you‟ve

likely ever seen but the food is good and the service is adequate. Not a big meat eater? There is lighter fare such as seafood on the

menu.

Expensive

Alice Fazooli's

155 York Boulevard

Richmond Hill, ON L4B 4A7

(905) 709-4280

www.alicefazoolis.com

Nothing to write home to Naples about, but decent Italian dishes at a modest price in a big friendly place. What more could you ask

for?

Moderate

Other stuff nearby…

Shopping.

The LCBO

Stands for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario. Other than a few select grocery stores, which have wine boutiques, this is the only

game in the province to buy wine and other spirits. Beer is also sold here as well in the aptly named Beer Store. We‟re lucky the

LCBO nearest the hotel, which is a five minute drive east along Highway 7 is very well stocked with a good selection of beverages.

However, be prepared for sticker shock, alcohol in Ontario tends to be a little more expensive than you might be used to. Don‟t be

afraid to try Ontario wines which are generally more modestly priced. Look for the VQA designation of quality.

First Markham Place

(Northeast corner of Warden Avenue & Highway 7)

Is an Asian shopping mall about a six minute drive east of the hotel on Highway 7. Stores here come and go on a regular basis.

However, you will find everything from high end fashion and jewellery to cheap electronics, toys and pirated DVDs. It has an

excellent food court offering Chinese, Thai, Japanese and Korean dishes at very low prices. Don‟t be fooled, even though it‟s a food

court some of the stalls here serve exceptional cuisine.

Adjoining First Markham Place is a big box store complex which includes Chapters Bookstore (superstore), Home Depot, Longo‟s

Grocery Store, Moore‟s Clothing (men‟s), Staples, Winner‟s (discount clothing) and other stores.

http://www.firstmarkhamplace.com/

The Pacific Mall

(Northeast corner of Steeles Avenue and Kennedy Road)

Is the largest Asian shopping mall in North America. It is approximately ten to twelve minutes‟ drive away. Has hundreds of shops

selling everything from designer eyewear to consumer electronics. A word of warning, while there is a lot of parking here it can still

be difficult to find a space, especially on Saturdays and Sundays. It is worth the trip, however, just for the ambience. For a preview

check out the videos on their website.

Tours of the Merril Collection

The Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy will offer tours of the

Collection, highlighting rare and beautiful holdings on Friday, Nov 2 and Saturday, Nov 3.

Please register at the Merril Collection table, where assistance may be arranged in getting to

the Collection.

Caesar’s SpaCaesar‟s Spa is the onsite spa at the Sheraton Parkway North. They are pleased to offer

members of WFC 2012 a 30% discount on individual treatments, or you can choose one of

their packages here: http://www.caesarspa.com.

Please call ahead to book an appointment.
