Monthly update
At the Extension & Outreach Annual
Conference on March 27th we learned
about two spectrums; innovating to
sustaining and informal organizations to
formal organizations. Together the
spectrums create an axis where we can see
Self-Betterment, Incubators, Sanctuary
and Services. Our sessions used this
concept throughout the day and wrapped
with a closing session honoring Dr. Cathan
Kress.
Programming
Finance of Caregiving— Kicked off at
the Western Home with Jeannette
Mukayisire.
Juntos—Has completed two workshops
serving four families each night with
another four expected. Meals have been
donated from the community & the
YWCA is providing free space to meet.
Kids in the Kitchen– Completed
lessons at Lincoln, Kittrell, and Cedar
Valley Preschool & Child Care Center
with 56 youth and 31 graduating. In
total Grace has taught 253 youth with
100 graduating!
Making Ends Meet—To be launched at
the House of Hope. Currently offered at
Pathways twice a month.
Master Gardeners— Awarded $5,000
local foods grant for Arboretum and
community gardens. Meetings have
moved to the Ike Leighty room of the
Community Foundation. A Gardening
Series is scheduled at the Waterloo and
Cedar Falls Public Libraries.
Considering plans to add a
demonstration garden at the National
Cattle Congress.
Bricks of Brilliance
Showcased!
This 4-H First Lego League
was the only featured team of
it’s kind at the First Robotic
Competition Regional event at
UNI on Saturday March 25th.
Five of the six members set
up their Animal Allies field and
demonstrated several mission
completions. 4-H members
answered questions and
presented information at this
popular exhibit.

Service Enterprise!
The Volunteer Center of
Cedar Valley is pleased to
announce certification of ISU
Extension and Outreach Black
Hawk County as a Service
Enterprise organization. A
Service Enterprise is an
organization that
fundamentally leverages
volunteers and their skills to
successfully deliver on its
social mission. Iowa is now
third in the nation, behind
Minnesota and California, in
number of Service Enterprises
statewide.

Money Smart Week— April 22-29
events being planned in Cedar Falls &
Waterloo.
Parenting– Cindy Thompson is on
AM1540 bimonthly.
SFP 10-14—Since the local trainings were
cancelled Cindy has had several
conversations with Shelly and state leaders
on not pursuing this further at this time.
School Garden 101— Two sessions have
been taught by Grace, Kathryn, Nicole and
Sheila with five sites attending.
Serve Safe— Waterloo will host eight
classes this year in our office and each are
expected to serve 20 participants. For the
first time an additional class completely in
Spanish is offered and filling quickly.
4-H County Council Members has
completed its 2017 Service Learning
Project! 16 Members and two Americorps
Staff Members volunteered at the Ronald
McDonald House in Iowa City. Groups
traveled and volunteered on March 5th and
March 26th. Member's chose to volunteer
time with the Ronald McDonald House in
an effort to touch the lives of families in
need.

Paid Time Off - 7 staff enjoyed a total
of 120 hours of paid time off.
Connie Nielsen—Connie’s last day will
be April 18th with VISTA and our
office.
Grace Margherio—Last day as our
Associate Extension Educator is April
7th.
Summer Temporary Hires—
Searching for a Fair Intern and a STEM
Intern.
