EDDIE WOO VISIT
Looking forward to hosting Eddie Woo on Wednesday, 10 April. Whilst Eddie
will be at Shellharbour City Library on the evening of the 10th between 6.30 pm
and 7.00 pm to chat about his new book, ‘Woos Wonderful Word of Maths’,
Eddie will be at this school between 10.00 and 11.30 am to work with our Stage
3 students and catch up with staff. Whilst retaining his substantive position as
a Head Teacher Mathematics at a Sydney high school, his YouTube channel has
over 450,000 subscribers and more than 25 million views worldwide as of
December 2018. In November 2017, he was named 2018 NSW Local Hero. In
2018, Woo hosted a show called ‘Teenage Boss’ on the ABC, which gave teens
control of their family's financial decisions for a month. Eddie gave the
Australia Day address in NSW in 2018, the first time a teacher has done so, and
won the Australia's Local Hero Award at the Australian of the Year Awards. In
March 2018, Woo was named a Top 10 Finalist in the Global Teacher Prize.
Eddie’s visit is a Community of Schools initiative.

YOUR P & C EXECUTIVE FOR 2019
At the AGM last Wednesday night, the following parents were elected to executive positions of our P & C:
President: Jess Crouch
Vice President: Matt Hutchinson
Vice President: Kristy Rowlands
Treasurer: Luke Crockford
Secretary: Sarah Pike
I would like to thank Gemma Bolton who served as a Vice President in 2018 and didn’t seek another year. Her work around the organisation of the fete in particular was much appreciated.
INTERIM REPORT AND LEARNING ADJUSTMENT SHEETS
Your child’s Interim Report will be sent home next week. Whilst the Interim Report will not provide you with specific assessment information, it will provide you with a snapshot of your child’s behaviour and attitude during
Term One. When we introduced the Interim reports a few years ago we surveyed parents to gauge how they
might be improved. We will be doing that again this year so keep an eye on your inbox and grab the chance to
share your views with us. Some parents will also receive a copy of their child’s Learning Adjustment Sheet. Your
child’s Learning Adjustment Sheet will outline adjustments being made for your child’s learning. Teachers have been making adjustments to maximise student learning for many years, however this year we would like to make
these adjustments formally known to you. Adjustments are the changes, supports or modifications that are made
to enable students to learn and demonstrate what they know, and can do. Adjustments can be made across any
or all of six component areas of the curriculum including planning, teaching and learning, assessment, reporting,
environment or resources. Some adjustments may be necessary throughout a student's school life while other adjustments may only be needed for a short period of time.
An adjustment can be as minor as sitting closer to the board, or as major as the provision of an individual report.
They can also be dynamic. As a child gets older, the need for individual adjustments may decrease in light of
increased maturity or increase in light of increasing curriculum expectations. Either way, as partners in their learning it is important that you know the nature of the learning adjustments. The return of this sheet with your
signature is vital if we decide to seek government funding to further support your child. Please sign the Learning
Adjustment Sheet and return it to the front office before the end of term. If you have any questions about the adjustments, please contact your child’s class teacher.
BIKE LICENCE
Students who ride bikes or scooters to school require a signed permission note from
their parent/carer which is available at the school office. The note requires
parents/carers to check the safety of the bike or scooter, ensure a helmet is well fitted
and discuss the exact route their child will be taking to get to school. Each of these is of equal importance and the third is a discussion you all need to have with your children, whether they ride or walk.

TONGARRA DISTRICT SWIMMING CARNIVAL
On Friday, 22 February, Miss Dodsworth and I had the pleasure of taking 33 of
our school’s best swimmers to the Tongarra District Carnival at Albion Park
Pool. We had a fantastic day and loved cheering along our competitors. The
highlight of our day was watching our relay teams, where the Senior Boys team broke a long standing record! Congratulations to all our swimmers, you were
fantastic and represented our school with great pride. We couldn’t be prouder of you all! A huge congratulations
to the Senior Boy’s Age Champion: Storm Balmain and to all the Shellharbour swimmers as we finished in second place in the pointscore against ten other schools.
Our best wishes go with those swimmers who gained selection to the Tongarra District team and who swam at
the South Coast Regional Championships on Wednesday, 13 March 2019 at Dapto Olympic Pool. This year we
had an amazing 11 students representing Shellharbour in the Tongarra District team: Storm Balmain, Mason
Smart, Jack Bailey, Tilly Marshall, Jonathon Yeo, Bennett Smart, Campbell Thompson, Byron Tynan, Jack Thompson, Blake Rhind and Ava Dragovic. A special mention to Ava Dragovic who placed second at her very first
school swimming carnival and went on to blitz the competition at the Tongarra District Carnival, coming in at
second place overall. An amazing effort!! This year has been one of our best years in the pool. You all should be
very proud of yourselves, as I am of you all! Our Senior Boys Relay (Storm Balmain, Jack Thompson, Mason Smart
& Blake Rhind) team were successful in making it through to the NSW PSSA State Swimming Championships to
be held at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre, Olympic Park, Homebush on the 11 & 12 April 2019. Wish I
could be there to cheer you on, but I know you all will do your very best on the day. I’ll be thinking of you! Mrs Barrett, Sport Co-Ordinator
Thursday, 21 March is Harmony Day
REMINDER: This Thursday, 21 March, is Harmony Day. It is a special day in which we celebrate and acknowledge the cultural diversity we have here at Shellharbour Public School and in Australia.
Students can come to school dressed either in something orange or in a costume that represents another culture, to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia. Orange is the colour chosen to represent
Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates
to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Students may also like to bring some healthy
orange food to eat during the day, eg carrots, mangoes, oranges. Contrary to information provided earlier, our
canteen will be unable to supply free oranges on the day.
Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live. Let’s join together and celebrate.
Thank you, Mrs Joanne Rowe, Harmony Day Organiser
